Q1 5 Multiply and Divide Simple Monomials Leading To The Derivation of The Laws of Exponents

The document explains how to multiply and divide simple monomials, detailing the processes of multiplying coefficients and adding exponents, as well as dividing coefficients and subtracting exponents. It introduces the laws of exponents derived from these operations, including the product of a power, quotient of a power, and power of a power. Examples and practice problems are provided to reinforce the concepts.

MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE SIMPLE MONOMIALS,
LEADING TO THE DERIVATION OF THE LAWS OF
EXPONENTS.
To multiply monomials, multiply the coefficients and add
the exponents of the same variables.

To divide monomials, divide the coefficients and subtract

the exponents of the same variables.

These operations lead to the derivation of the laws of

exponents.
2
Multiplication of Monomials

When multiplying monomials, you multiply the

coefficients and then multiply the variable terms.

If the variables are the same, you add their exponents.

3
Example

1. (2x³y) * (3x²y²)
(2 * 3) (x³ * x²) (y¹ * y²)
6 x⁵ y3
6x⁵y³

4
Division of Monomials

When dividing monomials, you divide the coefficients

and then divide the variable terms.

If the variables are the same, you subtract the

exponents.

5
Example

1. (10x⁵y³) 10 x⁵ y³
=
(2x²y) 2 x² y

= 5 x5-2 y3-1

= 5 x3 y2

= 5x3y2

6
Laws of Exponent

Product of a Power (When Multiplying, add the exponent)

When variables are the same, add the exponents.
xa xb = xa + b

7
Laws of Exponent

Quotient of a Power (When Dividing, Subtract the exponent)

When variables are the same, subtract the exponents.
xa
= xa - b
xb

8
Laws of Exponent
Power of a Power (When raising a power to another power,
multiply exponents)

(xa)b = xab
