What will be covered in the rest of today’s session?
What will be covered in the lecture-led session:
• GCD and LCM
• Sequences and Series
• Modulo and Arithmetic
• Multiplicative Inverse
Thank you for preparing for this lecture
Number theory is the branch of mathematics that deals with the properties and
relationships of numbers, particularly integers.
Key Concepts:
Greatest Common Divisor (GCD): The largest number that divides two integers
without leaving a remainder.
Least Common Multiple (LCM): The smallest multiple that two numbers share.
Prime Numbers: Numbers greater than 1 with only two divisors: 1 and itself.
Thank you for preparing for this lecture
Sequences: A sequence is an ordered list of numbers following a specific pattern or rule. We will focus on
two types of sequences - the arithmetic and the geometric sequence.
Applications of Sequences in IT & Computing
• Arithmetic Sequences: Predicting system loads and performance metrics over time.
• Geometric Sequences: Growth of data in exponentially increasing storage, such as database
indexing.
Problem-Based Learning
GCD and LCM
Find the GCD and LCM of the following:
1. 12, 48 and 96
2. 9 and 72
3. 36𝑥𝑦 3 𝑧 2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 72𝑥 3 𝑦𝑧
4. A chef is preparing two types of scones. She has 48 chocolate
scones and 72 vanilla scones. She wants to arrange them on a plate in
such a way that each plate has the same number of scones, with no
scones left over. What is the greatest number of plates she can prepare.
Problem-Based Learning
Sequences
1. Find the next three terms: 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, _____, _____, _____
2. Find the 75th term: 8, 16, 32, … _______
3. If the 3rd term of a geometric is 27 and the 5th term is 243. Determine
the first term and the common ratio.
Problem-Based Learning
Sequences Continued …
4. Determine if the sequence is arithmetic or geometric and then find the
given term.
a) 11th term: 5, 3, 1, –1, … ____________
b) 23rd term: 0.1, 0.4, 1.6, 6.4, … _____________
5. Determine the sum of the first 20 terms of each of the sequences
below:
a) 1, 6, 11 …
b) 3, 9, 27 …
Problem-Based Learning
Modulo Arithmetic
Question 1
Determine the multiplicative inverses of the following
a) 5 modulo 8
b) 3 mod 5
Question 2
Find 𝑥 if 5𝑥 ≡ 5(𝑚𝑜𝑑 10 )
Problem-Based Learning
Multiplicative Inverse of Modulo
Arithmetic Determine the multiplicative inverses of the following numbers:
a) 6 modulo 2
b) 124 mod 7
C) 13 mod 15
Questions for Discussion
Sequences
A data center processes incoming server requests at a constant rate. At the
beginning of operations, the server handles 500 requests in the first minute. Due to
increasing demand, the number of requests processed grows by 40 requests per
minute.
1. Determine whether the number of requests processed per minute follows an
arithmetic or a geometric sequence. Justify your answer,
2. Derive a formula to calculate the number of requests processed in any given
minute, n.
3. How many requests are processed in the 10th minute?
4. Calculate the total number of requests processed in the first 10 minutes.
