This book is informed by my personal encounters with education and
the overseas Chinese world in postcolonial Southeast Asia. I grew up and
attended school in Malaysia and Singapore. Having graduated from two
of the institutions discussed in this book—Kuen Cheng Primary School
and Raffles Girls’ School—I was able to use alumni connections to locate
sources and interviewees. My ethnic Chinese heritage has also shaped my
consciousness about the complexities of being both the observer and the
observed in diasporic space, and of claiming insight from the vantage point
of the Western academy where I am now situated.
A room of one’s own is a good place to start, but writers also need time,

A NOTE ON SPELLING AND TERMINOLOGY
Most Chinese words in this book have been transliterated with hanyu pinyin
romanization, with simplified Chinese characters also given for key terms.
Where transliteration of names or terms has been established by contem-
poraneous sources and was in common usage, I follow the conventions of
the period in question, for example, Liew Yuen Sien, Kuen Cheng, towkay.
Chinese surnames precede given names, except in cases where individuals
have adopted Western-style names. The word “medium” with reference to
schools, as in “Chinese-medium,” indicates the main language of instruc-
tion and is used interchangeably with the descriptors “Chinese-language”
or “Chinese.”

O n an October morning in 1951, the principal of Nanyang Girls’ School
in Singapore was walking to work when a group of youths threw a
toxic solution of nitric acid on her.1 Liew Yuen Sien survived and served at
Nanyang’s helm for another fifteen years, but she suffered painful chem-
ical burns to her face, eyes, and shoulders and could only resume work
after three years of recovery. Liew’s attackers were never caught. One of
the few descriptions of them on the official record is that they were simply
“Chinese ruffians.” Contemporary opinion was that the assault was an act
of retribution by local Chinese Communist sympathizers for Liew’s coop-
eration with British colonial authorities against them.2 Perpetrators and
victim alike were ethnic Chinese.
The attack on Liew Yuen Sien emerged from the collision of political
issues within the overseas Chinese community of Southeast Asia: China’s
quest for national modernization; female education as a key component of
this quest; and overseas Chinese efforts to live within an unstable matrix
of national, diasporic, and colonial demands. Liew’s professional creden-
tials illustrate this complexity. An active proponent of Chinese schools and
girls’ education in Singapore, Liew was principal of Nanyang Girls’ School
for forty years. She won a Chinese Nationalist (Kuomintang) government
award in 1940, an Order of the British Empire in 1958, and a Singaporean
presidential medal in 1967. She was hailed by much of the Chinese com-
munity as an active contributor to their welfare but also strongly criticized

by some of her co-ethnics for her acquiescence to British anti-Communist
pressure.
This episode of intra-ethnic violence is an extreme example, but it
reveals the potentially explosive nature of the politics of education in colo-
nial Malaya and Singapore. It also points to an intractable problem in iden-
tity formation: the question of authenticity, and who gets to determine
what it means to be loyal to one’s ethnicity and country. There were sharp,
sometimes deadly, divisions within the overseas Chinese community and
between various ethnic groups in these colonies throughout the early to
mid-twentieth century. These divisions were exacerbated by a linguistically
plural system of schooling established under British colonial auspices. The
British East India Company had taken over the strategically important trad-
ing ports of Penang (1786), Singapore (1819), and Melaka (1824), merging
them as the Straits Settlements in 1826. Home to Malays, Chinese, South
Asians, Eurasians, and several other ethnic or national groups, these settle-
ments came under direct English Crown control in 1867. They were further
amalgamated with other territories on the Malay Peninsula to form British
Malaya, which lasted until national independence in 1957. Throughout the
first half of the twentieth century, the British colonial government viewed
schools, especially local Chinese schools, as breeding grounds for political
activism and sought to control them through strict regulation.
The attack on Liew Yuen Sien occurred during the Malayan Emergency
of 1948–60, when local Communist insurgents, most of whom were ethnic
Chinese, turned their attention from resisting the Japanese Occupation
during World War II to fighting British imperialism using guerilla tactics.
Like many other Chinese schools in Malaya and Singapore at the time,
Nanyang Girls’ School had been home to youth Communist activity and was
under colonial scrutiny. In late 1951, Nanyang was forced to close until Liew
agreed to disband student organizations and shut down the school’s dormi-
tories, both of which were hotbeds of political activism.3 Government sus-
picion of local Chinese schools persisted beyond the Malayan Emergency,
well into the postcolonial era, and remains a flashpoint in the cultural pol-
itics of modern Malaysia and Singapore.
There is an additional, gendered component to Liew’s attack: not only
was she a woman whose status derived from her stewardship of a girls’
school, but the assault on her involved acid intended to disfigure her person.
Increasingly available as a result of industrialization, sulfuric acid became
a popular weapon in the United States and Western Europe, especially in
labor clashes during the eighteenth century and domestic assaults during
the nineteenth century.4 By the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries,
chemical attacks in civilian society were largely associated with sexual

jealousy or revenge. The majority of victims were women whose prospects
for marriage, work, and social acceptance would presumably be ruined by
facial disfigurement.5 In the mid-to late twentieth century, the incidence
of acid attacks in Asia and the Middle East began to rise.6 The persistence
of such attacks today represents gender-specific hostility, typically relating
to a woman’s assertion of independence in defiance of someone else’s claim
to her personhood.
In the case of Liew Yuen Sien, the body of a successful and influential
female community leader became the literal point of convergence for pub-
lic politics, personal animus, and a gender-specific mode of violence. That
this incident took place almost exactly a hundred years after the founding
of the first girls’ schools in Malaya and Singapore is a grim reminder that
female education has had a long and uneven road to acceptance.
This book is a history of educated overseas Chinese women in British Malaya
and Singapore from the 1850s to the 1960s, during more than a century of
British imperialism, Chinese and Southeast Asian nationalism, and patri-
archy. It examines the motivations and strategies of missionaries, colo-
nial authorities, and Chinese reformists and revolutionaries for educating
girls, and the impact that this education had on identity formation among
overseas Chinese women and larger society. Combining institutional and
personal viewpoints, it explores the girls’ schools in which these women
studied and worked, both those where the primary language of instruction
was English and those where it was Chinese. These schools were sometimes
also called English-language or English-medium and Chinese-language or
Chinese-medium schools, respectively. Some of these institutions spread
missionary and imperial influence; others nurtured powerful Asian ethno-
national sentiments. The chapters that follow relate the previously untold
stories of the students and teachers in these pioneering schools and trace
how ethnic Chinese women came to dominate these institutions—in terms
of numbers, as agents of change, and as targets of consternation by British
and Chinese authorities.
Overseas Chinese female education in these colonies was a force for
transformation and a battleground of ideologies during an era of national
reinvention. Girls’ schools could reproduce social and cultural norms, but
they could also be disruptive, giving overseas Chinese women options to be
colonial subjects, transnational actors, patriotic national citizens, or some
combination of these roles. These institutions exposed diasporic women
to a different set of pressures and limitations than were experienced by
women within the Chinese nation. Educated overseas Chinese women
