should the boatman row in order to reach a point on the other bank directly opposite to the point form where he
started? The width of the river is 2 km. (300)
3. A river 800 m wide flows at the rate of 5km/h. A swimmer who can swim at 10 km/h in still water, wishes to
cross the river straight. (i) Along what direction must he strike? (ii) what should be his resultant velocity? (iii)
how much time he would take? (300; 2.4 m/s; 333.3s)

vertical component of the velocity. (288.67 km/h; 144.33 km/h)
5. Find the unit vector parallel to the resultant of the vectors = 2 - 6 - 3 and =4 +3 - . ( -3 -4 )
6. Find the value of λ in the unit vector 0.4 + 0.8 + λ . ( )
7. Find the value of λ so that the vectors =2 + + and = 4 - 2 - 2 are perpendicular to each other. (λ = 3)
8. If unit vectors and are inclined at angle θ, then prove that = 2 sin .
9. Determine a unit vector perpendicular to both =2 + + and = - +2 . ( - - )
10. The diagonals of a parallelogram are given by the vectors 3 + + 2 and = - 3 + 4 . Find the area of the
parallelogram. (8.66 units.)
11. To a person moving eastwards with a velocity of 4.8 km/h, rain appears to fall vertically downwards with a speed
of 6.4 km/h. Find the actual speed and direction of the rain. (8 km/h; 5307’33” )
12. A bomb is dropped from an aeroplane when it is directly above a target at a height of 1000 m. The aeroplane is
moving horizontally with a speed of 500 km/h. By how much distance will the bomb miss the target? (1984.13 m)
13. A ball is projected horizontally from a tower with a velocity of 4 m/s. Find the velocity of the ball after 0.7 s.
Take g = 10 m/s2. (5.06 m/s; 60015’)
14. Prove that the maximum horizontal range is four times the maximum height attained by the projectile, when fired
at an inclination so as to have maximum horizontal range.
15. A boy stands at 39.2 m from a building and throws a ball which just passes through a window 19.6 m above the
ground. Calculate the velocity of projection of the ball. (27.72 m/s)
16. If R is the horizontal range for θ inclination and h is the maximum height reached by the projectile, show that the
maximum range is given by + 2h.
17. A person observes a bird on a tree 39.6 m high and at a distance of 59.2 m. With what velocity the person should

18. A bullet fired at an angle of 600 with the vertical hits the ground at a distance of 2 km. calculate the distance at
which the bullet will hit the ground when fired at an angle of 450, assuming the speed to be the same. (2.31 km)
19. A body of mass 10 kg revolves in a circle of diameter 0.40 m, making 1000 revolutions per minute. Calculate its
