Course Description:
This course offers various tools and techniques to perform statistical analysis in engineering decision making. Topics covered
include basic statistical methods of describing data, common statistical distributions encountered in engineering, tests of
hypotheses, confidence intervals, correlation and regression analysis.

Course Educational Objectives:


• To summarize and present data using numerical measures and visualization techniques.
• To learn the basic concepts of probability, discrete and continuous random variables, expected values, and probability
distributions.
• To be able to quantify the basic tools of statistical inference, interval estimation, and hypothesis testing.
• To apply regression analysis to formulate and solve real world problems and interpret results.

MODULE 1 DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS AND NUMERICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA 12 Hrs

Collecting and organizing Data, graphical displays of data, Classification of Statistical data, selecting a random sample,
Descriptive Statistics - measures of locations and variability, significance of standard deviation, coefficient of variation.

MODULE 2 INTRODUCTION TO PROBABILITY, RANDOM VARIABLES 12 Hrs

Sample spaces and events, axioms and properties of probability, conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem and independence,
discrete and continuous random variables, probability distributions, expectation and variance of random variables, the Central
Limit Theorem

MODULE 3 PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS 12 Hrs

Discrete probability distributions: Binomial, Poisson, Hypergeometric and geometric distributions, mean and variance of the
distributions with applications; Continuous probability distributions: Exponential and Normal distributions, their mean and
variance, properties and applications.

MODULE 4 ESTIMATION AND TESTS OF SIGNIFICANCE 12 Hrs

Introduction to sampling population, sample , Statistic, Sampling Distributions, Standard error, interval estimation, tests of
statistical inference about means; tests of statistical inference about variances; tests of statistical inference about proportions
using appropriate large and small sample tests

MODULE 5 CORRELATION AND REGRESSION ANALYSIS 12 Hrs

Introduction to correlation, measures of simple correlation, partial correlation and multiple correlation; linear regression, multiple
linear regression, properties, the standard error of the estimate, non-linear regression and logistic regression, applications of
statistical inference in regression analysis
