Surah At-Tariq Translation and Ayah-by-Ayah Explanation

Surah At-Tariq (86:1-17)

Revealed in Makkah | 17 Ayahs

1. ‫ق‬ َّ ‫س َماءِ َوال‬

ِ ‫ط ِار‬ َّ ‫َوال‬
By the sky and the night comer
Explanation: Allah swears by the sky and the star that appears at night, emphasizing its
significance.

َّ ‫َو َما أَد َْراكَ َما ال‬

2. ‫ط ِارق‬
And what can make you know what is the night comer?
Explanation: Allah draws attention to the uniqueness of At-Tariq.

3. ‫النَّجْم الثَّاقِب‬
It is the piercing star
Explanation: At-Tariq is described as a brilliant, penetrating star, possibly referring to a star's
light cutting through the darkness.

4. ‫علَ ْيهَا حَافِظ‬

َ ‫ِإن ك ُّل نَ ْف ٍس لَّ َّما‬
There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.
Explanation: Every person is under constant divine watch and protection, indicating
accountability.

5. ‫ق‬
َ ‫سان مِ َّم خ ِل‬ ِ ْ ‫َف ْليَنظ ِر‬
َ ‫اْلن‬
So let man observe from what he was created.
Explanation: Humans are urged to reflect on their humble origins.

6. ‫ق‬
ٍ ‫خلِقَ مِ ن َّماءٍ دَا ِف‬
He was created from a fluid, ejected.
Explanation: Human life originates from a mere gushing fluid, highlighting human fragility.

ِ ِ‫ب َوالت َّ َرائ‬
7. ‫ب‬ ُّ ‫يَ ْخرج مِ ن بَي ِْن ال‬
Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.
Explanation: The process of human creation is described in a precise, anatomical manner.

8. ‫علَ ٰى َرجْ ِع ِه لَقَادِر‬

َ ‫إِنَّه‬
Indeed, Allah, to return him [to life], is Able.
Explanation: If Allah created humans from fluid, He surely has the power to resurrect them.

َّ ‫يَ ْو َم ت ْبلَى ال‬

9. ‫س َرائِر‬
The Day when secrets will be put on trial.
Explanation: On Judgment Day, all hidden thoughts and deeds will be exposed.

ِ َ‫َف َما لَه مِ ن ق َّو ٍة َو ََل ن‬

10. ‫اص ٍر‬
Then man will have no power or any helper.
Explanation: No one will be able to defend themselves or receive help on that day.

11. ‫الرجْ ِع‬

َّ ‫ت‬ِ ‫س َماءِ ذَا‬
َّ ‫َوال‬
By the sky which returns [rain]
Explanation: The sky’s ability to send back rain is another sign of Allah’s power.

12. ‫ْع‬
ِ ‫صد‬
َّ ‫ت ال‬ ِ ‫َو ْاْلَ ْر‬
ِ ‫ض ذَا‬
And [by] the earth which cracks open,
Explanation: The earth splits to bring forth vegetation, symbolizing life and resurrection.

13. ‫ِإنَّه لَقَ ْول َفصْل‬

Indeed, the Qur'an is a decisive statement,
Explanation: The Quran’s message is final and clear, leaving no room for doubt.

14. ‫َو َما ه َو ِبا ْله َْز ِل‬

And it is not amusement.
Explanation: The Quran is serious and truthful, not mere entertainment or fiction.

15. ‫إِنَّه ْم يَكِيدونَ َك ْيدًا‬

Indeed, they are planning a plan,
Explanation: The disbelievers are scheming against the Prophet and his message.

16. ‫َوأَكِيد َك ْيدًا‬

But I am planning a plan.
Explanation: Allah’s divine plan will overpower their schemes.

17. ‫َف َم ِه ِل ا ْلكَاف ِِرينَ أ َ ْم ِه ْله ْم ر َو ْيدًا‬

So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.
Explanation: Allah grants the disbelievers temporary respite, but their judgment is inevitable.

Summary

Surah At-Tariq calls attention to the wonders of creation and the certainty of resurrection. It
assures believers of Allah's constant protection and warns disbelievers of the consequences of
their schemes. The Quran's message is firm, decisive, and leaves no excuse for rejection.
