My Counseling Philosophy
To be an effective future guidance counselor, there are some attributes or strengths that I believe
would be a great help to me. These are active listening skills, empathetic, good communication, and
without bias or being non-judgmental. I believe that these strengths or qualities could make me become
an effective future guidance counselor because with these strengths, I think I can really handle and
manage my job as a counselor. However, there are some fears that arises in my mind in becoming a future
guidance counselor. The big question is that, “Am I really capable in handling a client who have
complicated problems?” or “What if I don’t have the capacity to handle those clients who have difficult
situation in their emotional problems?” These are just my apprehensions towards becoming a future
guidance counselor. But in spite of this, I want to become a guidance counselor. This is the purpose that
I’m taking the MAEd GC and to fulfill my goal.
I could see myself as a guidance counselor in the future because I want to help clients dealing with
personal problems especially those family related and emotional related problems and help them become
better person in the society. If ever I will be a guidance counselor someday, my own perspective view of
my philosophy in counseling is to empower clients to their journey of self-exploration. This mean to
increase the level of self-understanding and self-awareness of the client. In this perspective, I as guidance
counselor will act as a facilitator of the client’s journey. As a counselor I believe that through letting the
client provide their answers or solutions to their own problems will help them discover their unconscious
self and will able them to improve their self-awareness. It is my job to make those answers explicit by
letting them operate their own solution to their problem. It is my job to help client’s identify, develop and
mobilize their own resources to successfully solve problems and to overcome obstacles in life.
My counseling philosophy is simply to explore, to understand and to act. We should fully analyze
the issues to increase understanding, and based on this increased understanding, the client is encouraged
to take some action. And this action signifies change. Most people generally do not accept this idea of
change because they prefer to stay in their comfort zone. The tendency is that this comfort zone which is
likely to provide safety and security, is indeed the cause of suffering. In my counseling philosophy I would
prefer to have an open dialogue to my client and to let them stay out of their comfort zone so that they
could freely express their feelings, their sufferings about their past traumatic experience. There will be an
active interaction between me and my client. This is to help the client explore himself or herself. I strive
to encourage and motivate the client to make some action on solving his or her own problem through
active listening and empathetic understanding. And to put the client at the center of the therapy.
