ELECTRICAL MACHINE I
Time: 3 hours Full Marks: 70
Instructions:
(i) The marks are indicated in the right hand margin.
(ii) There are NINE questions in this paper.
(iii) Attempt FIVE questions in all.
(iv) Question No. 1 is compulsory.
1. Short answer type questions (any seven) :
2 x 7 = 14
a. State Ampere law.
b. Discuss eddy current loss.
c. Define commutation in DC Machine.
d. Why is laminated core used in Transformer.
e. Explain the terms ‘base speed’ of a dc motor.
f. Discuss magnetic inrush current in a transformer.
g. Give two difference between core type and shell type transformer.
h. Discuss the armature control method of speed control of DC motor.
i. Why interpoles are used in a dc motor?
j. Discuss all day efficency of a trasformer.
2. A single-phase 100 kVA, 1000 V / 100 V, 50 Hz transformer has a voltage drop of 5%
across its series impedance at full load. Of this, 3% is due to resistance. What is the
percentage regulation of the transformer at full load with 0.8 lagging power factor? 14
3. (i) A 200 V DC series motor, when operating from rated voltage while driving a certain
load, draws 10 A current and runs at 1000 r.p.m. The total series resistance is 1 Ω. The
magnetic circuit is assumed to be linear. At the same supply voltage, the load torque is
increased by 44%. Find the speed of the motor in r.p.m 7
(ii) Discuss Ward – leonard method of speed control of dc motor 7
4. A transformer has maximum efficiency of 98% at 15kVA at unity power factor. The
loading conditons are given below:
(i) 12 Hrs--- 2 kW at p.f. 0.5
(ii) 6 Hrs --- 12 kW at p.f. 0.8
(iii) 6 Hrs --- 18 kW at p.f. 0.9
Calculate the all day efficiency. 14
5. (a) Discuss the parallel operation of transformer with unequal voltage ratios. 4
(b) Draw and explain the no – load phasor diagram of a 1- phase transformer. Discuss how
primary leakage flux is accounted for in the phasor diagram. 3
(b) Derive the condition for maximum efficiency of a transformer. 7
6. (a)Why are OC /SC tests performed on a transformer? Discuss what side they are performed
and why. Also draw the circuit diagram for both the tests. 7
(b) The OC test in a 100 kVA, 2000/200 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer gives 200 V, 90
A, 5 kW on low voltage side. Find the core loss and magnetizing componet of exciting
current. 7
7. (a)The primary and secondary voltages of an auto transformer are 250V and 100 V
respectively. It supplies a load of 50 kW at unity power factor. How much power is
transferred to the load by conduction? 7
(b) Determine the ratios of weights of copper in an auto transformer and a two winding
transformer if the transformation ratio is 3 7
8. A 220 V DC series motor runs drawing a current of 30 A from the supply. Armature and
field circuit resistances are 0.4 Ω and 0.1 Ω respectively. The load torque varies as the square of
the speed. The flux in the motor may be taken as being proportional to the armature current.
What is the amount of resistance in ohms that should be added in series with the armature in
order to reduce the speed of the motor by 50%. 14
9.Write short notes on any two of the following:
(a) Biot – savart law
(b) Three point starter with refernce to DC machine
(c) Auto transformer 2 x 7 = 14
