5 S mart Rules to Master Any Conversation in Any Language

Rule 1
Focus on the Big Picture When
Listening
Why This Matters
Kraków, Poland — July 2017

I was going on a date in the heart of the Jewish Quarter. I was excited—but also a little nervous. I had
been learning Polish for a while, but I was far from confident. I had hoped we could speak primarily in
English. My hopes were crushed.

My date looked at me and said: “Tylko po polsku.” (Only in Polish.) No English. No hope. The
challenge was set. I sat across from her, smiled anxiously, and said: “Do you mind if I speak
English?”
She looked at me and, without batting an eye and replied in Polish:

“Nie, nie, mówisz dobrze po polsku — porozmawiajmy po polsku!”

(No, no, you speak Polish well—let’s speak Polish!)

The weird thing is we had been chatting (via text) in Polish for weeks before this in -person
conversation. But what she didn’t know was that Google Translate had been my secret sidekick the
whole time. Writing gives you time to think. Speaking in the moment? That’s another beast on its own!

At first, things went smoothly. The café was cozy, the vibe was relaxing. She spoke slowly and clearly
— I understood, responded, and we even laughed a bit. Then it happened. Out of nowhere, she fired
off a long, fast-paced sentence packed with slang and unfamiliar words. I froze. My brain stalled, like a
computer buffering. What did she just say?

S he stared at me, waiting. Seconds turned into an eternity. My brain froze—words flying past me like a
train I couldn’t catch. I was damn near panicking.
But then, in the middle of the chaos, I caught two familiar words:

kawa (coffee) and jutro (tomorrow).

Oh! She is asking me if I want to go grab a coffee together tomorrow!

I took a deep breath, made an educated guess, and replied with something that hopefully made
sense. To my pleasant surprise, she nodded and smiled. The conversation rolled on.
Th at moment taught me something big:
You don’t need to catch every word to keep a conversation going. Just grab the main idea—and go
with the flow.

5 Smart Rules to Master Any Conversation in Any Language

Lesson

When listening to a conversation, focusing on every single word will slow you down and cause
frustration. Focus on keywords, tone, and gestures to understand the main idea—just like native
speakers do.

Shift your focus from translating each word to grasping the bigger picture. Understanding the
core message is enough to keep the conversation flowing.

How to Apply This Today

Stop trying to catch every single word—you’ll lose track of the conversation.
Stop getting stuck on unknown words—it will only slow you down.
Stop assuming you didn’t understand anything just because some parts were unclear.

Start focusing on key words and phrases to grasp the main idea.
Start using confirmation strategies, like repeating back what you understood.
Start paying attention to tone, gestures, and visual clues to support comprehension.

Example Exercises:

“Blind listening” exercise: listen to a short conversation without subtitles or a transcript and
concentrate only on keywords, tone and rhythm. Check what you have understood with the
subtitles or the transcript.

Repeat and confirm: when speaking with a native speaker, start getting into the habit of repeating
the key points of what they said to check your understanding.

Interactive Box: Reflect & Apply

Quick Quiz:

When someone speaks too fast, what should you focus on?
☐ Every single word.

☐ Relax and focus on their tone, gestures, and key words.

☐ Panic and ask them to repeat everything immediately.

Rule 2
Get into Native-Language
Mindset
Why This Matters

Cartagena, Colombia – Summer 2021

My friend Rocky, an American who’d studied Spanish for years, went to Colombia with two cousins:
Diego, fluent in Puerto Rican Spanish, and Ben, who didn’t speak a word.

Rocky was in the middle—he knew the language but lacked confidence.

One afternoon, they met their Airbnb host, who spoke with a thick regional accent. Even Diego
struggled to understand him.

But while Diego rolled with it—asking questions, paraphrasing—Rocky froze. His brain hit panic
mode:

“Why can’t I understand?

“Was all that studying for nothing?”
“What will Diego think?”

5 Smart Rules to Master Any Conversation in Any Language

It wasn’t the Spanish that blocked him—it was the self-doubt. Later, Diego admitted he had trouble
too. The difference? Mindset. Rocky was stuck in performance mode—trying to be perfect, scared of
messing up. Diego had a native mindset—focused on connection, not perfection.

That moment stuck with me.

Because we all do this. In our native language, we shrug it off—“Must be their accent,” or “It’s too
noisy.” But in a foreign language? We blame ourselves. Every time.

The truth?

Fluency isn’t about being flawless. It’s about staying in the conversation—even when it’s messy.

Lesson

Native speakers don’t aim for perfection—and neither should you. If you don’t understand
something, it’s not necessarily your fault. The other person may have spoken too fast, mumbled, or
used slang you don’t know.

Shift your mindset: You’re not on stage. You’re just having a conversation—like you would in
your own language.

How to Apply This Today

Stop assuming that if you don’t understand something, it’s your fault.
Stop analyzing every sentence in your head before responding.
Stop trying to avoid mistakes instead of focusing on communication.

Start reacting like a native—if you don’t understand, ask naturally to clarify.
Start focusing on what you can say, not on what you can’t.
Start trusting that your brain will fill in the gaps over time.

Example Exercises:
Mindset Listening Exercise – Watch a video in your target language and, instead of focusing on
every word, pay attention to how natives react when they don’t understand something. Do they ask
for clarification? Do they guess? Mimic their approach.

Fluency Shift Practice – Next time you don’t understand something in conversation, don’t freeze.
Instead, respond with confidence using: "So you mean...?" or "Can you say it differently?" instead of
panicking.

Interactive Box: Reflect & Apply

Quick Quiz:

1️. What do native speakers assume when they don’t understand someone?
☐ That they are bad at their own language.

☐ That the other person didn’t express themselves clearly.

☐ That they should never speak again.

How do native speakers react when they don’t know a word?

☐ They panic and stop talking.

☐ They find another way to say it.

☐ They refuse to continue the conversation.

What’s one shift you can make today to think more like a native speaker?
☐ Stop blaming yourself when you don’t understand everything.

☐ Start focusing on keeping the conversation flowing.

☐ Treat every conversation like a language test.

Application example:

"I will stop overanalyzing and start speaking naturally, even if I make mistakes."

5 Smart Rules to Master Any Conversation in Any Language

Rule 3
COP - Communication Over
Performance
Why This Matters
Budapest, Hungary - August 2017
I had been learning Hungarian for nearly two years. My friend, Alessandro, and I were headed to a
small town (Vác) just outside the capital.

At Keleti Station, I approached the ticket booth. Behind the glass was a stern woman in her 60s who
looked like she'd rather murder someone than work another minute.

Determined (and scared!) to get what I needed to say right, I took a deep breath and launched into my
best Hungarian: a long, grammatically correct sentence... that quickly unraveled halfway through.

She blinked, then replied in rapid-fire Hungarian. I didn’t catch a word. That familiar feeling of fear
kicked in: What if I can’t make myself understood? What if I mess this up?

Then I let it go. I looked her in her blood hungry eyes and said, slowly and clearly:

"Vác. Ma. Vonat?" (Vác. Today. Train?)

She stared at me, then silently grabbed a timetable, circled the next departure, and handed me a
ticket. Done. No fancy grammar. No perfect phrasing. Just the essentials. And it worked.

That moment reminded me of something I always tell my students—but had forgotten myself:

Real conversations aren’t about sounding impressive. They’re about being clear—and making a
connection.

Lesson
Focusing on perfection slows you down and holds you back. Hesitating, overthinking, and fearing
mistakes create more barriers than the mistakes themselves.

Forget performance. Prioritize communication! Speak naturally, make mistakes, and keep the
conversation flowing to get your message across.

Stop treating every conversation like a language exam.
Stop fearing mistakes so much that you say nothing at all.
Stop believing that fluency = perfection.

Start focusing on communication rather than grammar.

Start embracing mistakes as part of the learning process.
Start speaking spontaneously, even if your sentences aren’t perfect.

Example Exercises:

Record yourself speaking for 60 seconds about a simple topic (your weekend, your hobbies, your
last trip) focusing on forming thoughts naturally.

Have a conversation with a native speaker or tutor, prioritizing flow and communication over
perfection.

Quick Quiz:

1️. What’s your biggest fear when speaking your target language?

☐ Saying something incorrectly

☐ Not knowing enough words

☐ Sounding “unnatural”

Rule 4
Simplify

Why This Matters

Krakow, Poland - Summer 2014

I needed a haircut in Krakow. What can I say? Poland is my home away from home.

At the time, my Polish was B1—and my hair was inching dangerously close to “wild shrub” territory.

So, just go and get a haircut. It’s that simple right? Not really—because my Polish was very limited at
the time. However, I had to get this “wild shrub” taken care of. I walked into a small barbershop and
greeted the barber with a line I had looked up on Google Translate

"Dzień dobry! Chciałbym obciąć włosy."

(G ood morning! I’d like a haircut.)

H e nodded and asked:

a r t ie? Maszynka czy nożyczki?"

"J k k ó k

(How short? Clippers or scissors?)

He might as well have asked me to perform a liver transplant, because I was at a complete loss.
Ideally, I would have answered with "I don’t want it too short on the sides, just a little trim, but leave
some volume on top."

But 2014 Luca was not capable of such intricacies, so I just said what I could:

"Nie za krótkie. Bok krótki, góra dłużej. Nożyczki, proszę!"

(Not too short. Short on the sides, longer on top. Scissors, please!)

The barber nodded, smiled, and got to work. No misunderstandings, no unnecessary confusion and
best of all? A nice, clean haircut!

Lesson

Trying to sound advanced often leads to confusion. Long, complicated sentences don’t make you
more fluent—they make communication harder. Native speakers value clarity over complexity.

Say less, but say it well! Use short, natural sentences that get your point across effortlessly.
The simpler your speech, the easier it is to be understood—and the more confident you’ll feel.

How to Apply This Today

Stop trying to translate long, complicated sentences from your native language.
Stop thinking that simple speech makes you sound childish. “ ”
Stop using complex grammar when a simple phrase works just as well.

Start using short, direct sentences. Subject – Verb – Object.

Start breaking long ideas into smaller, easier sentences.
Start practicing saying the same idea in fewer words.

Example Exercises:
Sentence Breakdown Challenge – Take a long sentence in your target language and break it into
two short, clear sentences to improve clarity and flow.

5 Smart Rules to Master Any Conversation in Any Language

Children’s Book Study – Try reading a children’s book in your target language and observe how
short, direct sentences are used for natural communication.

Key Point Summarization – Listen to a native conversation and practice summarizing the main
ideas in your own words without overexplaining.

The simpler your sentences, the faster and more naturally you will speak.

Interactive Box: Reflect & Apply

Quick Quiz:

What’s the best way to make your speech clearer?

☐ Use long, detailed and well-built sentences.

☐ Speak in shorter, clearer phrases.

☐ Translate everything word-for-word from your native language.

What happens when you simplify your speech?

☐ You sound less fluent.

☐ People understand you more easily.

☐ You might sound childish or less intelligent.

Imagine you want to say: "Even though I love learning Japanese, I want to wait before starting
because I’m still learning French."
Which is simpler?

☐ "I love Japanese. But I will wait. I am learning French now."

☐ "Even if I truly enjoy acquiring Japanese, at this precise moment I must delay my studies due to the
fact that I am currently involved in the process of the French language."

Application example:

"I will practice simplifying my sentences by breaking long thoughts into two short phrases when I
speak."

5 Smart Rules to Master Any Conversation in Any Language

Rule 5
Tennis Talk

Why This Matters

Belgrade, Serbia – September 2024

I was visiting my friend and colleague, Aleks, in Serbia's capital. Although I had been learning Serbian
for two years, I had barely spoken it, but I wanted to break that dry spell by speaking as much Serbian
as possible on my trip.

In the past, I had avoided this, dreaded it… ran from it. But I realized there’s no better way to become
a great speaker than to speak… in style!

What was the best way to do that? A game of Q&A—but make it fun, like a tennis match.

The "ball" in this scenario is the topic, and you have to hit it back and forth by asking and answering
questions. This keeps the conversation flowing, even if it’s not perfect.

Aleks: Како ти се свиђа Београд?

(How do you like Belgrade?)

Luca: Београд ми се стварно свиђа! А теби? Како се теби свиђа Београд?

(I really like Belgrade! And you? How do you like Belgrade?)

Aleks: И мени се свиђа. Много је диван град.

(I like it too. It’s a wonderful city.)

Luca: Да ли ти се свиђа живот овде?

(Do you like living here?)

Aleks: Да, свиђа ми се живот овде. А теби? Да ли ти се свиђа живот овде?

(Yes, I like living here. And you? Do you like living here?)

Luca: Да, и мени се свиђа. Где се шишаш у Београду?

(Yes, I like it too. Where do you get haircuts in Belgrade?)

And so on and so forth.

Don't make the mistake of just throwing out random words or phrases. Instead, build on what you
know to explore what you don’t. Keep it simple, keep it fun, and keep the rally going!

Lesson

A great conversation isn’t about long speeches or perfect grammar—it’s about rhythm and flow.

Think of it like tennis: ask, answer, and keep the ball moving. The more you rally, the more
natural your speaking becomes.

How to Apply This Today

Stop giving short, one-word answers without follow-ups.
Stop waiting for the other person to do all the work in a conversation.
Stop worrying about making perfect sentences instead of focusing on interaction.

Start asking questions whenever you answer one.

Start using simple phrases like “And you?” or “What about you?” to keep the exchange alive.
Start paying attention to the natural flow of conversations in your native language—you

already know how to do this!

Example Exercises:

Practice the "tennis talk" technique: F ind a speaking partner and set a challenge—each person
must ask a follow-up question before the other moves to a new topic.

Shadow real conversations: Listen to podcasts or interviews and note how native speakers pass
the conversation back and forth.

Prepare follow-up questions: W rite down 5-10 common conversation topics and at least one
question you could ask for each.

The goal isn’t to impress, but to express and keep the rally going.
