Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings and other physical
structures.
Shape is an element of art. Ask learners to draw their own building, for example a
house or double story building. They must make use of shapes to design their
building. (Use a pen or pencil and an A4 paper)

WEEK 4-6 Preparation for PAT PRACTICAL NO 3
1. Week 4-6 : Learners will be guided to do the following:
Do a rough planning on an A3 or A4 paper using a pencil. Remember: If learners will
do the collage, use a strong, poster type of paper.
The planning stage must include a landscape part with buildings.
Learners may use ANY landscape and ANY types of buildings.
Guide learners to make use of different shapes and lines in the planning stage.
Make sure that learners use the whole space.
2. Learners must bear in mind that this landscape is part of the process towards the collage they
will create in Weeks 7-11.
3. Start by outlining the objects in your composition using light, sketchy strokes. Don’t worry
about getting all the basic details right at this point.
4. Once the basic outlines are in place, start with additional details which you can see. Use a
variety of pencil strokes to create different textures and effects.
5. Experiment with basic drawing techniques and keep changing until you find what works best.
6. As from Week 7, learners will start working on the collage.
7. Learners will need the following materials:

Waste materials & other materials to use in the mixed media collage.
8. What is Mixed Media? Definition: Mixed media art refers to a visual art form that
combines a variety of media in a single artwork. For example, if you draw with ink,
then paint over it with watercolours, then add some highlights in coloured pencil –
that’s mixed media! Mixed media is all about breaking the boundaries between
different art forms. Artists need to look at everything as a potential canvas.
9. What is Relief? • Definition: A relief is a wall -mounted sculpture in which the three -
dimensional elements are raised from a flat base. Sculpture in which figures or other
images are attached to a flat background, they are raised from the plane of the
composition. Often this work is described as bas -relief or haut –relief.
10. The learner should start thinking about a theme for their mixed media artwork. Start
collecting materials needed to create their relief collage of buildings in a landscape of
choice.

Living in South Africa and Zimbabwe, the Ndebele Nation is an ethnic group
that is known for its incredible artistic talent. Using their homes as canvas and
studios, the women of this ethnic group create beautiful works of art that have
been passed down from generation to generation. Not only do they paint their
houses in a unique style, but they also use their homes as studio spaces. At
home, they create wearable beadwork like headgear, bracelets, and
necklaces. Even though the tribe is shrouded in mystery, their artwork is
adored by the world.

Monochromatic: An artist may decide to create a piece of artwork which is
monochromatic. This means that the artist uses tints, shades and tones of a single
colour. The painting below was made of various shades of grey.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Learners have completed the rough planning of the landscape. (Week 4-6)
2. Begin by preparing a selection of ‘creative’ papers that can be used.
3. Start with the background: (The sky) (For example blue colours).
4. Use a variety of papers for your landscape. (Trees/mountains/roads)
5. Using rectangular shapes such as old envelopes, labels or tickets, compose a city or street
scene, taking care to overlap the pieces on the sky when you stick them down. Fold and cut
the papers to make interesting building shapes.
6. Add your own pre-prepared papers to represent different textures and details, such as
windows, walls, doors, fire escapes, scaffolding and brickwork.
7. Be creative and work neatly.
