Symptom

Can't open a connection to site 'SYB_BACKUP' because 'set up channel' message could not be sent.

Environment

SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) All Versions

Reproducing the Issue

Run dump database model to "/tmp/mod.dmp"

Cause

Possible causes are

• The dataserver is upgraded with binary upgrade without shutting down the backup server and try to
dump database.
• An orphaned SYBMULTBUF process attached to the backup server still running.
• Impolite shutdown of the backup server (kill -9) resulting in orphaned backup server processes.

Resolution

Based on the circumstances there are multiple resolutions

• Restart backup server.


• Restart backup server using different port if the port is being used earlier and the backup server is not
being shutdown politely.
• Check the interfaces file if the configured ports are the same and restart both dataserver and
backupserver.
• Recycle the host
