Thanks go to the Holy Spirit! He indeed is our tutor as He has helped me glean and cement concepts
together from several diverse sources. Over the years the books and teachings of others have inspired me
and tutored me in the area of understanding and experiencing dreams and visions.

Mark Virkler’s materials helped to form much of my concepts when I initially put this study together.
Communion with God by Mark and Patti Virkler is an outstanding aid. I thank the Lord for the pioneering
writing of Kevin Conner and his masterpiece book on Interpreting Symbols and Types. I also wish to
acknowledge Herman Riffle’s great materials – especially his book Interpreting Dreams. John Paul
Jackson’s teachings helped to inspire me in my personal quest. Thank you Lord for these and other
pioneers!

Preface: Joel’s Prophecy
The scriptures clearly depict for us that as the period of time called the “last days” unfolds; there will be a
great increase of “revelatory activity” occurring in the Church across the face of the earth. Such a mighty
move of God will be unprecedented in all of Church History. Let’s take a quick look at Joel’s Prophecy for a
moment.

Joel 2:28, 29 states, “And it will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; and
your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
And even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.”

It sounds as though there will be (and is) a great increase in the prophetic giftings being released. It
sounds as though the supernatural ways of God will be restored in that hour. It sounds as though this
could be pretty far spread – perhaps even global in nature!

Notice part of the form that this out pouring of God’s Holy Spirit will take: dreams and visions. Notice also
to whom the Lord will profusely grant these graces: old and young; male and female; those bound and
those free. Sounds like a pretty inclusive category to me. I actually cannot think of one category left out of
God’s end time visitation of His great love!

Wow, if that be the case, then perhaps the Lord would be raising up revelatory teachers who could help
mentor people in these forgotten ways of God! Well, if recently you have been hungering for some radical,
yet balanced teaching to help ground you in these revelatory ways, then this study guide – Receiving and
Discerning Revelation – was made with you in mind!

For your practical help, this guidehas been divided into three sections each with four lessons. The first
section covers the topic of Receiving Revelation. Section Two follows and builds with sage material on
Receiving Dreams and Visions. The last section closes and rounds out this study guide by addressing
the needed topic of Discerning Revelation.

Hey, it’s time to dig in! I trust that you will be challenged and refreshed through these teachings. It has
been an honor to prepare them just for you! May the fullness of Joel’s prophecy come to pass and may you
see an increase in the Spirit of revelation in your life!

Blessings to You!

Receiving
Revelation
Lesson One:
God’s Multi-Faceted Voice
I. INTRODUCTION

When Jesus was being tempted by the devil after His forty-day fast, Satan said to Him, “If you are the Son
of God, command that these stones become bread.” But Jesus answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall
not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God’”(Recorded in Matt. 4:4,
quoted from Deut. 8:3). The word “proceeds” used here is a continuous active verb. Jesus is stating that
God’s life-giving Word proceeds and continues to proceed. It is a “proceeding Word” that gives us life! God
has spoken, God is speaking, and God will continue to guide His children by speaking to them.

God says that out of the mouth of two or three witnesses, every fact is to be confirmed (Deut. 19:15; Matt.
18:16; II Cor. 13:1). God wants us to hear His voice, discern it from other voices, and through the Spirit of
wisdom and understanding to have the correct interpretation and application of His revelation to us.

In the following series of teachings on this subject of Receiving and Discerning Revelation, I wish to share
with you principles and trust that the Holy Spirit will equip you to know the Lord better. God does not
want us to know only the “historical Jesus” who came in the form of flesh and walked among men. But
rather, God greatly yearns that we would know the living, resurrected Christ through the power of the
Holy Spirit. That is what discerning God’s voice is all about – hearing, knowing, and obeying the risen
Lord! With these thoughts in mind, let’s begin our journey in Receiving and Discerning Revelation.

II. GOD’S UNLIMITED WAYS WITH MAN

The following scriptural examples portray the diversity of tools the Holy Spirit has and will use to release
the voice of God to man.

A. Psalm 29 – the voice of the Lord… water, thunder, powerful, breaks, majestic, flames of fire, shakes,
reproductive, strips, etc.

B. Job 33:13–18 – God speaks once, twice… through a dream, vision.

C. Acts 10:9–16 – In a trance, Peter heard a voice say…

D. Rev. 5:11 – The voice of many rushing angels.

E. I Thess. 4:16 – The voice of the archangel.

F. Rev. 1:15 – The sound of many waters.

G. Gen. 3:8 – The sound of the Lord walking in the garden.

H. II Sam. 5:23–25b – The sound of the army of God marching in the tops of the trees.

I. Acts 13:2 – The Holy Spirit said, “Separate…”

J. John 16:13 – He will speak to you things to come.

K. II Peter 1:21 – Men moved by the Holy Spirit declare God’s voice.

L. Ex. 3:4 – Audible voice of the Lord externally heard.

M. Psalms 85:8 – By His peace dwelling in our hearts.

N. II Cor. 12:1–4 – Heavenly visitation where one is brought up before the Lord.

O. Romans 8:16 – The Holy Spirit bearing witness to our spirit.

P. II Pet. 2:16 – A dumb donkey speaking with the voice of a man.

Q. James 5:19–20 – Person to person – speaking the counsel of the Lord one to another.

R. Psalms 119:105 – The written Word is our primary source of God’s voice.

S. Heb. 1:2 – In the last days God has spoken to us through His Son.

T. Joel 2:30–31 – Signs in the heavens and wonders in the earth beneath.

III. INSCRIPTURATION

The two highest means of the Lord speaking to mankind are, of course, through Jesus becoming flesh and
dwelling among men (John 1:14) and through the inscripturated revelation of God to men. II Tim. 3:16 tells
us, “All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training
in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequately equipped for every good work.” The Greek word
for “inspiration” is theopnuestos, which means “God-breathed.” It is inerrant and infallible. According to
Rev. 22:18–19, inscripturated revelation is not given today. This may be seen for the following reasons:

A. Not All Prophetic Messages Are Inscripturated Revelation

1. Num. 11:24–30 – The 70 elders prophesied whose messages weren’t recorded in scripture.
2. I Sam. 10:10–11; 19:18–24 say Saul’s word was not retained for succeeding generations by
scripture.
3. I Chron. 25:1–8 – Many of the “songs of the Lord” were not included in the Psalter as scripture.
4. Acts 15:32 – The words of Judas and Silas, as well as Agabus, were not inscripturated.

B. Covenant Relationship of the Old Testament Prophecy

All prophecy of the Old Testament points to the fulfillment in the New Testament. All of God’s
covenant word points to the revelation of Jesus as the Messiah, the Christ.

C. Christ as the Climax of All Revelation

Heb. 1:1–2 –In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in
various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all
things, and through whom he made the universe (NIV).

IV. PRESENT REVELATION1

A. Two Realms of Present Revelation May be Received Today These are the following realms:

1. Illuminative revelation – Rom. 10:17 – Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the
message is heard through the word of Christ (NIV).
2. Informational revelation – I Cor. 14:25 – And the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall
down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!” (NIV).

B. Correlation between Logos and Rhema

As we store up the written Word on our lives, we then give the Holy Spirit something to blow upon and
turn into the “spoken Word” in our hearts.

C. Diagram on Revelation

Realm of Revelation Time Span Nature of Revelations

Enlightens principles based upon God’s written Word and applies
Illuminative Revelation Operative today
them prophetically to people’s situations.
Informational Revelation Operative today Specific information about people’s lives and situations
New revelation received by inspiration of the Holy Spirit to be
Inscripturated Revelation NOT operative today
authoritative and equated with God’s written revelation.

V. LET US HEAR!

One of the most frequent phrases given to us in the book of Revelation is, He who has an ear, let him hear.
Let’s learn from the warnings found in Hebrews 3 and 4, Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your
hearts. Instead, let us:

A. Isaiah 28:23
Listen and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say.(NIV).
Isaiah 50:4–5 – The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that
sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.
The Sovereign LORD has opened my ears, and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back (NIV).

B. Isaiah 30:18–21
Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of
justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! O people of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no
more. How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you.
Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be
hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left,
your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it” (NIV).

Lesson Two:
Receiving Revelation
I. GOD’S DESIRE IS THAT WE BE A PEOPLE OF REVELATION

A. God Wants the Lamp of Revelation Lit!

The Holy Spirit wants the candle of His presence to burn brightly within the life of each believer. Let’s
trim the lamp of God’s presence in the temple of God so that visions will be frequent once again.

1. I Samuel 3:1–3 – Samuel rested by the Ark of God’s presence.

2. II Kings 6:17 – Elisha prayed that another would see.
3. John 16:13–15 – The Holy Spirit will illuminate truth.
4. Daniel 12:3 – The wise will shine brightly for the Lord.

B. Simply Ask!

1. According to Acts 2:17 dreams, visions and revelation are:

a) Scriptural
b) For you
c) For today!

2. Ask and receive according to James 4:2 and John 16:24.

3. Revelation comes in:

a) Answer to prayer:
(1) I Kings 3:3–5 – After Solomon offered sacrifices to God, the Lord appeared to him in a
dream.
(2) Daniel 2:17–23 – Daniel requested that he might know the secret mysteries of the Lord.
b) Special situations:
(1) Genesis 28:10–12 – A ladder of visitation came down to Jacob while in the vicinity of Haran.
(2) Matthew 2:19 – After Herod’s death revelation was released to Joseph.
c) Response to fasting:
(1) Daniel 9 and 10 – In responses to prayer, fasting and confession of sin, angelic encounters
were sent to Daniel.
(2) Matthew 5:3–8 – Humility is rewarded by the Kingdom of God.

C. Set Your Mind and Affections Above

2. Romans 8:5–9a – Sow things to the Spirit and you will reap things to the Spirit.
3. Romans 12:1–2 – As we renew our minds, the will of God will be revealed to us.

II. QUIETNESS: THE INCUBATION CRADLE FOR REVELATION

A. Scriptural Basis of the Necessity of Quietness

1. Isaiah 30:15 – “This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘In repentance and
rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.’”
2. Psalms 46:10 –“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be
exalted in the earth” (NIV).
3. Psalms 131:1–3 – My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself
with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a
weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the
LORD both now and forevermore.

B. Learning from the Lives of Others

1. Henri Nouwen (1932–1997)2

A spiritual life without discipline is impossible. Discipline is the other side of discipleship. The practice
of a spiritual discipline makes us more sensitive to the small, gentle voice of God.

The prophet Elijah did not encounter God in the mighty wind or in the earthquake or in the fire,
but in the small voice (I Kings 19:9–13). Through the practice of a spiritual discipline we become
attentive to that small voice and willing to respond when we hear it.

It is clear that we are usually surrounded by so much outer noise that it is hard to truly hear our
God when He is speaking to us. We have often become deaf, unable to know when God calls us and
unable to understand in which direction He calls us.

Thus our lives have become absurd. In the word absurd we find the Latin word surdus, which
means “deaf.” A spiritual life requires discipline because we need to learn to listen to God, who
constantly speaks but whom we seldom hear.
Jesus’ life was a life of obedience. The word obedient comes from the Latin word audire, which
means “listening.” Jesus was always listening to the Father, always attentive to His voice, always
alert for His directions. Jesus was “all ears”. That is true of prayer: being “all ears” for God. The
core of all prayer is indeed listening, obediently standing in the presence of God.

Without solitude it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life. Solitude begins with a time and a
place for God and Him alone. Jesus says, “Go to your private room and, when you have shut the
door, pray to the Father who is in that secret place (Matthew 6:6, JB).

2. Thomas Kelly (1893–1941)3

Mister Eckhart wrote, “As thou art in church or all, that some frame of mind, carry out into the world;
into its turmoil’s and fitfulness.” Deep within us all there is an amazing inner sanctuary of the soul, a
holy place, a Divine Center, a speaking Voice, to which we may continuously return. Eternity is at our
hearts, pressing upon our time – torn lives, warning us with the intimations of an astounding destiny,
calling us home unto Himself.

It is a light that illuminates the face of God and casts shadows and new glories upon our faces. It is
seed stirring to life if we do not choke it. It is Shekinah of the soul, the presence in the midst. Here
is the slumbering Christ, stirring to be awakened, to become the soul we clothe in earthly form and
action – and He is within us all.

Mental habits of inward orientation must be established. An inner, secret turning to God can be
made fairly steady after weeks and months and years of practice and lapses and failures and
returns. It is as simple as Brother Lawrence found it, but it may be long before we can achieve any
steadiness in the process.

Begin now as you read these words, as you sit in your chair, to offer your whole selves, utterly and
in joyful abandon, in quiet, glad surrender to Him who is within. In secret ejaculations of praise,
turn in humble wonder to the Light, faint though it may be. Keep contact with the outer world of
sense and meanings. Behind the scenes, keep up the life of simple prayer and inward worship. Let
inward prayer be your last act before you fall asleep and the first act when you awake.

3. Madame Guyon (1648–1717)4

In “beholding the Lord” you can come to the Lord in a totally different way. The mind has a very strong
tendency to stray away from the Lord. Therefore, as you come before the Lord to sit in His presence,
beholding Him, make use of the scripture to quiet your mind.

The way you do this is really quite simple. First read a passage of scripture. Once you sense the
Lord’s presence, the content of what you have read is no longer important. The scripture has
served its purpose; it has quieted your mind; it has brought you to Him.

Next, while you are before the Lord, begin to read some portion of scripture. As you read, pause.
The pause should be quite gentle. You have paused so that you may set your mind on the Spirit.
You have set your mind inwardly – on Christ.

While you are before the Lord, hold your heart in His presence. Yes, by faith you can hold your
heart in the Lord’s presence. Now, waiting before Him, turn all your attention toward your spirit.
The Lord is found only within your spirit, in the recesses of your being, in the Holy of Holies; this is
where He dwells.

III. THINGS THAT WILL HINDER THE FLOW OF PURE REVELATION

A. Lifestyle of Carnality – Isaiah 57:20–21

1. Worry – Psalms 37:8

2. Anger – Ephesians 4:26
3. Lust – Romans 13:10–14
4. Alcohol/Drugs/Addictions – Ephesians 5:18
5. Bitterness – Hebrews 12:15

B. Entertainment – Mark 4:24

We must be careful what we listen to. What we let into our eyes and ears will be what our heart and
mind will dwell on. Go on a TV/movie fast.

C. Inconsistent Schedules
This definitely can hinder the flow of revelation. At times this is not our fault – but our job demands
and schedules, etc. Cry out for God’s grace and He will help you alter your schedule as needed.

IV. TIPS ON REMEMBERING DREAMS

A. Working with Clocks

1. If possible, get rid of your loud alarm clock. Ask the Holy Spirit to wake you up. Establish a habit of
getting up at a set time, if possible.
2. Many dreams come between 4:00 to 5:00 A.M.
3. Instead of an alarm, wake up by using a clock radio tuned to soothing music.
B. Recording

1. Keep a note pad and pen by the bed.

2. Consider using a small tape recorder.
3. Develop your dream alphabet by keeping track of symbols.
4. Make note of your feelings/emotions in the dream/revelation.
5. Ask, “What does this symbol mean to me?”“Can I find it in scripture?”
6. Be still and try to recall one or two details and then your memory will kick in (Zechariah 4:2).

C. Get Counsel
Get wise counsel from gifted interpreters of dreams. Not everyone will have this capacity as well
developed as others. Even in scripture, Daniel and Joseph are the only ones who were specifically
mentioned having this gift.

V. KEYS TO TESTING REVELATION

A. Normally the Voice of the Lord Will Not Create Fear

The enemy can release oppression (Ps. 55:3), but God’s way will release hope to us (Rom.15:4).

B. It Will Not Condemn

When you abide in Christ, there is no condemnation (Rom. 8:1). But the ministry of the Holy Spirit will
bring strong, specific conviction of sin (John 16:8).

C. It Will Not Put You Down

The Lord is for us, and when we call on His Name, He comes to our aid (Ps. 55:12), and will edify and
comfort you (I Cor. 14:2).

D. Short Dreams Will Carry a Lot of Impact

At times, the short dreams you awaken out of are the most significant. Long dreams at times are a
result of your active or even tired soul (Eccl. 5:7).

E. It Will Be Backed Up by the Word

God does not contradict Himself. True revelation will not conflict God’s Word but will compliment and
confirm (John 17:17; 16:13).

F. The Inner Witness of Your Spirit

The Holy Spirit will speak peace to our heart (Ps. 85:8; Col. 3:15) and give us an inner witness (Rom.
8:16).

VI. PLUG IN AND RECEIVE

A. Ask and Believe – Mark 11:24

When we pray, believe that we receive! God wants you to receive freely!

B. Receive! – Acts 3:3–5

Now – release your faith toward God and expect to receive! Remember, God wants you to hear His
voice, experience His revelatory ways, more than you want to!

Lesson Three:
Turning Logos into Rhema
I. INTRODUCTION

Walking in the tenuousness between Logos and Rhema is a great task. As stated previously, all Logos
equals the “written word” and Rhema the “spoken word.” Even as a person will pressure cook, can, or
store up their fruit, vegetables, or produce to be used, eaten and enjoyed at a later date, so is the
relationship of storing up the Logos of God to later become the fresh, life-producing Rhema.

The foundation of receiving the spoken word into our lives is establishing the building blocks of
meditation, studying, reading, memorizing, and praying the written Word. There is a direct correlation
between the ability and capacity of “hearing” and “hiding.” We are admonished to hide God’s Word in our
hearts. As we consistently do this, we are establishing safety, security, and protection into our lives. We
then have a basis from which to judge the multitude of voices that come our way, and establish a potential
resource given over to the Holy Spirit upon which He may breathe.

Let us investigate this important aspect of Receiving and Discerning Revelation – “Turning Logos into
Rhema.”Let’s lay our foundation properly so that the Holy Spirit can magnify the Word of God.

II. DEFINING LOGOS AND RHEMA

A. Terms Commonly Used:

1. Logos – written word – used 331 times in the New Testament

2. Rhema – spoken word – used 70 times in the New Testament

B. Distinctions:

1. Dictionary of New Testament Theology, Vol. 3, Colin Brown:

“Whereas Logos can often designate the Christian proclamation as a whole in the New Testament,
Rhema usually relates to the individual words and utterances – man has to render account for every
unjust word (Matt. 12:36); Jesus answered Pilate without a single word (Matt. 27:14); the heavenly
ones speak unutterable words (II Cor. 12:4).”

2. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words:

“The significance of Rhema (as distinct from Logos) is exemplified in the injunction to take up the
sword of the Spirit, which is the Word (Rhema) of God – Ephesians 6:17. Here the reference is not to
the whole Bible as such, but to the individual scripture which the Spirit brings to our remembrance for
use in time of need, a prerequisite being the regular storing of the mind with scripture.”

C. Comparative Analysis
(From the Master’s thesis of Dr. Fount Shults, who is currently teaching Old Testament Studies and
Biblical Languages at Elim Bible Institute.)

1. Planning and Execution

Logos was that which was in the mind before communication, while Rhema was the vocalization and
articulation involved in expression. That is, Logos was the thinking and Rhema was the saying. The
planning and preparation involved in deciding what to speak is the Logos but the thing said to achieve
the goal was a Rhema. Logos included the thought and Rhema emphasized the speaking. Logos
connects the planning and purpose; Rhema is the execution of the plan or its oral expression.

2. Communication and Expression

Rhema was the vehicle and Logos was the content. Rhema emphasizes the spoken message or the
preached Gospel, while Logos stresses the message.

3. Whole and Part

The third category of distinction between Logos and Rhema is seen when Logos signifies the whole
speech, message or doctrine in opposition to the individual supporting arguments or specific
statements. Logos stresses the whole while Rhema is a specific part or word of the total.

D. Romans 10:17
So faith comes from hearing (akoe) and hearing by the word (Rhema) of Christ.

1. Akoe means “to have audience with, to come with ears.”

2. Thus Rom.10:17 expanded and personalized would read like this: So faith comes and continues to
come by having audience with God through the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, and having come to the
ears of my heart, the individual words He is uttering to me.

III. ABIDING IN THE WORD

A. Lessons from John 15

1. John 15:1, 2
Abiding in the vine is abiding in Christ. As we do this we bear much fruit.
2. John 15:3
Christ word makes us “clean” as He abides in us.
3. John 15:4–6
As you abide in Christ, not only do you bear much fruit, but you realize that apart from this constant
abiding “you can do nothing”.
4. John 15:7
As you abide in Christ’s word, you know His will the power of fervent, effective prayer is activated. “If
you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you.”
5. John 15:8
The Father is glorified as we abide in His word and thus bear much fruit. By this we prove that we are
His disciples.
6. John 15:9–11
We demonstrate our love for God through keeping His word. As we do this His joy is in us and is made
full.

B. Lessons from Exodus 16

1. Exodus 16:1–3
The complaint of the children of Israel for food arose as they wandered in the wilderness.
2. Exodus 16:4–7
God’s promise of manna is in response to man’s complaint. “You will see the glory of the Lord.” God’s
glory is demonstrated through visible answers to prayer.
3. Exodus 16:8–12
The promise of bread and meat is promised at twilight and morning.
4. Exodus 16:13–15
In the morning fine flake like things appeared upon the ground. The children did not know what it was.
They said, “What is it?” (Many times God’s answer to our prayers comes in a form that we do not
readily recognize.)
5. Exodus 16:16–19
Specific commands are given on when and how much of this “manna” to gather. “Every man gathered
as much as he should eat.”
6. Exodus 16:20
Some did not follow the orders and left part of it until the next day and it bred worms. This was
displeasing to Moses.
7. Exodus 16:21
As the Israelites obeyed the Lord’s commandments, every man had all that he needed and it did not
become spoiled.
8. Lessons That We Glean
We must gather the Word (manna) everyday. Your portion today is only good for today. You cannot live
on yesterday’s manna. If you do not eat today’s portion, you will have lack and need. But if you “abide
in His Word daily” you will have life within you.

IV. TURNING LOGOS INTO RHEMA5

God desires to speak to us through the Logos. He desires to give us a spirit of revelation, to open the eyes
of our hearts (Eph. 1:17–18), and to cause our hearts to burn within us (Luke 24:32). He desires for the
Logos to be transformed from simple words to personal heart revelation and conviction as we pray over
the Word, allowing the Spirit to cause it to live in our hearts.

How can Logos become faith-giving Rhema? Primarily by opening all five senses of your spirit to be filled
with Logos. The following steps of action place you in prime position to receive revelation from
God:

A. Ears of Your Heart

You direct your whole attention to God’s Word as you begin to read. You must incline you ear to His
words; be in an attentive attitude so that you hear what He is speaking to you from the passage. Let’s
remember the admonition, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Perhaps, the first commandment is “Hear O Israel…” This is so true. We must learn to listen with our
inner ear if we are going to hear!

B. Eyes of Your Heart

You sanctify your imagination, deliberately offering up to the Father the eyes of your heart, to be filled
with visions of the eternal reality that you are reading in the Word. Enter in. Let your eyes be filled
with His light and revelation. (Note another lesson in this guide, “Vision: The Power That Sustains.”)

C. Mind of Your Heart

You keep the words and visions you have received constantly in the midst of your heart. You do not
allow the activities of life, or doubts, or anything else, to take away the meditations of your heart from
His Words. You must learn to “watch over your heart, for out of it flow the issues of life.”

D. Will of Your Heart

You set your will to speak only those words and visions you have received as you have studied the
Bible. You will speak nothing to the contrary. Let purity come forth from within. As you have set a
guard over heart, you now choose (the will) to walk in prudence and wisdom, cultivating the fear of the
Lord and release those things that bring grace to the hearer.

E. Emotions of Your Heart

Your deep underlying emotions are stirred by what has filled the senses of your mind and spirit, and
you are thus moved to action. You have a sense of peace and assurance as the witness of the Spirit
confirms and deepens the Word into your heart. Eventually, even the emotions of our heart are
transformed as we continue to gaze upon the mirror of God’s wonderful Word.

Lesson Four:
The Voice of the Lord – Inner Voice & Other Leadings
I. INTRODUCTION

One basic distinction between Christianity and other religions is that Christianity goes beyond a simple
code of ethics or list of rules and laws that one has to follow, and offers direct, spiritual experiences with a
loving God to its followers. We not only know about God, we experience Him.

We not only say the sinner’s prayer, but we also experience His Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that
we are the children of God (Rom. 8:16). We not only seek guidance from the laws of the Bible, but we also
find guidance through the Spirit granting peace in our hearts. We do not simply read the Bible as a lifeless
book with black print on white pages, but we experience it as alive (Heb. 4:12), and God “illumines” or
quickens it to our hearts as we pray for a spirit of revelation (Eph. 1:17). We do not just pray for a list of
things; rather God “burdens” our hearts to pray for the things He desires.

We have this direct experience of God because He has sent His Holy Spirit into our hearts saying, “Abba
Father” (Rom. 8:15), therefore opening up for us the opportunity of a direct, ongoing experience with the
living God.

Thus, we come to know truth with our hearts or spirits, rather than only our minds. Through His Spirit,
God reveals things into our spirits, which our natural eyes and ears can never sense directly. We hear His
voice within our hearts. We can be led by the Spirit (Rom. 8:14). We have inner subjective experiences in
our heart. Through insight, we receive revelation from Him and He illumines scripture to us; through
intuition, sanctified by the Holy Spirit, we sense the prompting of the Lord and the voice of the Lord. So,
our life in the Spirit, our relationship with God, is a spiritual, inner, heart-life experience.

II. VERBAL REVELATION

The most prominent means of revelation, discerning God’s voice, is that of spoken revelation. It comes in
numerous forms: both vocal and non-vocal means.

A. Vocal Revelation – Audible Voice

1. Ex. 19:9 – at Mt. Sinai God spoke audibly to Moses so that the people could also hear His voice.
2. I Sam. 3:1–14 – The voice of the Lord spoke audibly to Samuel so as to be mistaken for Eli’s voice.
3. Matt. 3:17 – God’s voice was heard from heaven at the water baptism of Christ.
4. Matt. 17:5 – God spoke audibly at the occasion of the transfiguration of Christ.
5. John 12:28 – God’s voice confirmed audibly the prayer of Jesus regarding His glorification.
6. Acts. 9:4–6 – Saul of Tarsus heard the audible voice of the Lord on the road to Damascus.

It is possible to hear God’s external audible voice today, but this is not the norm. Most verbal
revelation is inner in nature – hearing the still, quiet, calm call of the Shepherd to the heart of His
followers.

B. Vocal Revelation – Inner Voice

Read Matthew 10:19–20. God injects His rhema thoughts into our hearts. They will be characterized by
the following:

1. They are like our own thoughts except that you sense them as coming from the heart and not the
brain (mind), in that the thoughts will be spontaneous, not premeditated.
2. They can come easily as God speaking first person.
3. They are often light and gentle, and easily cut off by any exertion of self (own thoughts, will, etc.).
4. They may have unusual content to them, in that they will be better and often somewhat different
from your own thoughts.
5. They will cause a special reaction within your being (a sense of excitement, conviction, faith, life,
awe, peace).
6. When embraced, they carry with them a fullness of strength to carry them out, as well as a joy in
doing so.
7. Your spiritual senses are trained as time goes on, and you will more easily and frequently
experience God speaking in this way.
8. Remember, God is speaking to you all the time, and you are receiving His injected thoughts. This is
why it is important to learn to distinguish your thoughts from His. (Judging revelation will be covered
in an upcoming lesson.)

C. Non-Vocal Inner Revelation

This is the level of hearing the voice of God that most believers of Christ consistently are aware of and
function in.
Examples are:

1. Psalm 85:8 – inner peace

2. Rom. 8:16 – the Holy Spirit bears witness
3. I Cor. 12:4–11 – gifts of the Holy Spirit (especially the word of knowledge/the word of wisdom)
4. Inner knowings (possibly the gift of faith/discerning of spirits)
5. Acts 16:18 – divine disturbances, turbulences, annoyance, etc.
6. Various other leadings – burdens, etc.

IV. STATEMENTS ON DISCERNING GOD’S VOICE

A. God says that, at the mouth of two or three witnesses, every fact is to be confirmed. I would like to
present some confirming testimony on how others have discerned the voice of God in their hearts. The
three basic truths I have found confirmed, over and over, are that:

1. God’s voice comes often as a spontaneous thought.

2. The eyes of our heart are used as God grants vision.
3. The writing of these things is often important.

B. Statements from Douglas Wead’s Book, Hear His Voice.11

1. “An impression came to me.” (p. 84)

2. “In my mind, I saw a girl sitting at the table…” (p. 94)
3. “I jotted down the thoughts…” (p. 79)

C. Statements from Larry Tomczak’s Article

“Spiritual Gifts and You” (Charisma, October 1981, p. 57)

“How does spontaneous revelation actually come?”

1. “Pictures. God often spoke to prophets through pictures or visions. He may plant a picture in your
mind…”
2. “Scripture. God speaks through specific Bible verses, which come to mind. He may impress a part or
a verse or even a reference upon your mind.”
3. “A word. God may bring to your mind a specific word or piece of advice that did not come as the
result of a detailed thought process. It was more spontaneous and given as if dropped into your mind.
The thoughts that come from the Lord in this way are usually unpremeditated and spontaneous in
character and come more in a flash without a logical sequence; whereas, when we are consciously
thinking, or even daydreaming, we usually connect one thought with another.”

D. Statements from Hearing His Voice, by John Patrick Grace

(Ave Maria Press, Notre Dame, Ind., 1979):

1. Oral Roberts
a) “Sometimes God’s voice comes as an ‘inner audible voice.’ Sometimes it comes as ‘words
imprinted more quietly on my spirit.’ Sometimes simply ‘deep impressions.’”
b) “Roberts received a vision.”
c) “Roberts dutifully copied down the words He received from the Lord.” (p. 46)
d) Through praying in tongues and then praying to interpret back to the mind, we can have two-
way communication going on between us and God.” (p. 42)

2. Francis McNutt
“The way my guidance comes…is intuitive…gut feelings…instincts.” (p. 57)

3. Ben Kinchlow
“When God speaks to me in the Spirit, His voice translated itself into thought concepts that I can
conceive in my mind. So when I say, ‘I heard the Lord,’ or ‘The Lord spoke to me,’ I mean He spoke to
me through a feeling in my spirit that was translated into a thought in my mind. And the thought
immediately brings with it what young people call a ‘rush.’ It’s something that hits you as right.” (pp.
78, 79)

4. Mahesh Chavda
“The closer I get to God and the longer I walk with Him, the gentler His voice becomes. His voice may
come like a wind, so powerful and undeniably Him. Yet the most often, His voice is the gentle, soft
nudges of a loving Shepherd. We must cultivate a love for the dove of God as we woo Him to come and
stay, not just to light for a one-time encounter. After all, we want a relationship with Him – not just a
one-time ministry fling.”

V. CLOSING LESSONS FROM JOHN 10:1–5; 14–16

A. God Wants a Relationship!

This is the primary goal of “hearing God’s voice.” It is not enough just to get right information – He
wants our attention and heart!

B. Calling Before Us
We are called to follow. We have a good leader who goes before us and asks us to simply follow after
him.

C. Voice of Strangers
As we get to know His voice, we will learn to discern the voice of the one true Shepherd from the voice
of strangers. We will learn by grace and experience!

D. Voice of the Lord – An Aspect of His Shepherding Ministry

Cultivating a listening ear to our Master will be a great tool in His hands of His shepherding care
released into our hearts.

E. Closing Prayer
Teach me the voice of my Teacher and Shepherd with discernment so that I may follow Jesus and not
the voice of a stranger. Enroll me in your School of the Spirit for Your Kingdom’s sake. Amen!

The Purpose of Prophetic Giftings
I. SCRIPTURAL EXAMPLES OF DREAMS AND VISIONS AND THEIR BENEFITS

A. Revealed God’s Promises

1. Genesis 28:10–15 – Jacob dream of a “gate of heaven.”

2. Genesis 37:5–10 – Joseph’s dream revealed God’s promise of his future leadership position.

B. Gave Direction – Especially at Major Turning Points

1. Matthew 1:20 – Joseph told to take Mary as his wife.

2. Acts 9:10 – Ananias told of the conversion of Saul.
3. Acts 10:3–10, 11:5 – Cornelius’ and Paul’s encounter opened the church for the Gentiles.
4. Acts 16:9 – Paul’s Macedonian call received by a vision.

C. Used to Give Warnings

1. Genesis 41 – Pharoah was given the dream concerning severe times that were approaching.
2. Matthew 2:12 – Wise men warned not to return.
3. Matthew 2:13 – Joseph warned to take Jesus and Mary to for safety reasons.
4. Acts 22:17 – Paul was warned to flee Jerusalem and go to the Gentiles.

D. Special Ways of God in Dealing with Man

I Kings 3:5 – Solomon received his dream where God said, “Ask what you wish Me to give you.”

E. Used to Predict Future Events

1. Daniel 2:1, 3, 16, 28 – Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream concerning the future.
2. Luke 1:22 – Zechariah visitation concerning the birth of John the Baptist.

F. Used to Give Courage

1. Acts 18:9–10 – When Paul was Corinth he was encouraged by a vision that he would encounter no
harm as he preached the gospel in that city.
2. Acts 27:23 – Paul on the ship about to be shipwrecked.

G. Major Way that God Communicates to Prophets

1. Numbers 12:6 – “I the Lord shall make Myself known to him…”

2. Deuteronomy 13:1 –God often uses dreams and visions with prophets as a way He reveals Himself to
them.

II. WHY ARE THEY USEFUL AND IMPORTANT?

A. New Light and Perspective Are Granted

These prophetic graces can reveal things in a new light or with a new perspective on:

1. Past events
2. Current state of affairs or happenings
3. Even future events

B. It Opens Us Up!
They can reveal things to which our rational mind would not normally be open because of:

1. Past experiences
2. Prejudices
3. Cultural traditions
4. Indoctrination
5. Fear

C. Creates a New Hunger

God uses these revelatory ways to wet our appetite for a search for more of Him. Psalms 34:8 tells us
to “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Remember, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the
glory of kings is to search out a matter”(Prov. 25:2).

III. ADDICTIONS AND TRAPS TO AVOID

A. Don’t Forget the Spiritual Disciplines!

The revelatory word is to complement the Word of God, not compete with it. (See the lesson on
“Wisdom in Handling Revelation” in this guideand the lesson “The Power and Perils of the Prophetic”
in Prophetic Foundations study guide. At times people seem to become “prophecy junkies.” We are to
be addicted to God and His Word!

B. Don’t Forget the Body of Christ!

Don’t become a Lone Ranger and become “puffed up” with arrogance as a result of your many
“revelations.” Be a practical functioning member of the Body of Christ in a given locality. Seek godly
counsel and a network of caring people. Avoid being the “prophet in isolation.”

C. Watch Out for “Revelation Fixation”!

Daniel 7 gives us the powerful example of continuing to look until… Keep looking! Keep pondering!
Keep meditating until… Keep looking until you see “thrones set up” and the Ancient of Days taking His
place.

Do not become fixated on the revelation of evil. God has a higher view for you than, the “revival of
evil.” Don’t be impressed with the Devil’s plans. Only be satisfied with God’s revival, plan, hope,
welfare and purpose (Jeremiah 29:11–14).

D. “See Me”Saith the Lord!

Keep looking until you see the Lord Himself. He wants to reveal more than His plans and ways. He
wants to reveal Himself.

1. Amos 5:4 – This is what the Lord says to the house of Israel: “Seek me and live”(NIV).
2. Amos 5:6 – Seek the Lord and live, or He will sweep through the house of Joseph like a fire; it will
devour, and Bethel will have no one to quench it (NIV).
3. Amos 5:14 -Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just
as you say He is (NIV).
4. Revelation 19:10 – At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a
fellow servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For
the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy”(NIV).

IV. CALLING TO PREPARE A PEOPLE

A. Prophets and the Prophetic as Forerunners

1. Malachi 4:5–6 – The ministry of restoration as a result of the prophetic presence poured out.
2. Luke 1:16–17 – Prophecy over the birth of John the Baptist.
3. Matthew 17:10–13 – John the Baptist before Christ.
4. Luke 2:21–38 – Anna and Simeon ushered in the way for the child Jesus to come forth.
5. Revelation 11:3–7 – The two witnesses who prophecy before the great beast emerges.

B. Prophets Help Prepare the Way for Christ’s Coming

They help prepare the way for the Lord to return.

1. Eph. 2:19–22, 3:1–6 – Proper revelation is needed of the Body of Christ to bring Biblical restoration.
2. Acts 3:19–21 – Prophetic words of restoration must be fulfilled before Jesus is released to return to
earth.
3. Rev. 10:7, 11:15 – The proper message must be proclaimed with power, conviction and with signs
following.
4. Amos 3:7 – God first speaks His secrets to His servant the prophets.

C. Preparing the Church to Be the Bride of Christ

According to Isaiah 40:3 and Luke 1:17, the prophetic is used to make ready a people prepared for the
Lord.

1. Eph. 6:17 – The Church-Bride must be fully clothed with her wedding garments and fully equipped
with her weapons such as the Word of God, which is made sharp by the revelation knowledge provided
by the prophets.
2. Ez. 37:1–14 – Prophetic ministry helps to activate church members into their own ministries and
functions
3. I Tim. 4:14–16; II Tim. 1:6 – Prophetic anointing releases creative ability to impart, birth and
activate that ministry into the individual. It is used to stir up giftings and ignite faith, hope and love.

V. FOLLOWING THE PERSON OF JESUS!

A. Hebrew 1:1–2
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but
in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through
whom he made the universe (NIV).

B. John 6:63
The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they
are life (NIV).

C. John 16:12–14
I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes,
he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he
will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it
known to you (NIV).

D. Revelation 19:10
At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you
and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is
the spirit of prophecy” (NIV).

Jesus is the express image of the Father. Everything about Jesus is a testimony of the Father’s true
nature and will. Our prophetic ministry today should be a testimony of the Good News of Jesus every
day – in word, attitude, and deed.

As our knowledge of Jesus is increased through the prophetic message, grace and peace will be
multiplied in our daily lives.

Lesson Six:
Visionary Revelation
I. INTRODUCTION

Visionary revelation is manifested in three different ways: visions, trances, and dreams. This lesson will
cover an overview of materials on visions and trances. In the “Dream Language” lesson, we will investigate
the subject of dreams.

Visions are closely associated with dreams, but visions occur during the time when the individual is fully
awake and conscious. Dreams and visions are signs of God’s last day outpouring of His Holy Spirit. God
reveals Himself to us through the use of the eyes of His heart by granting dreams and visions. God greatly
desires to communicate to us through the eyes of our heart (Eph. 1:17–18), but we must first recognize
this faculty within us and the importance it can have as we present it to God to be used by Him.

Since Christianity is a heart-to-heart or spirit-to-spirit relationship, we would expect to see this faculty
used much in our relationship with God. However, it is not often used as it should be among Western
Christians because we have been trained to live out of our mind rather than our heart. We have put logic
on a pedestal and neglected the value of “seeing in the Spirit.” So now, let’s consider developing our
capacity to discern God’s voice through the benefits of visionary revelation.

II. DEVELOPING ONE’S CAPACITY TO SEE IN THE SPIRIT

A. Jesus Our Model

1. John 5:19–20 – Our Lord Jesus set the example, as He did nothing of Himself, unless it was
something He saw the Father doing.
2. Matt. 13:34 – Jesus turned everything in life into a parable and parables become relatable picture
language to communicate needed message.

B. Scriptures on Looking
Read the following scriptures and ask the Lord for your capacity to see into the things of the Holy
Spirit to be increased.

1. Dan. 6:10
2. Hab. 2:1–3
3. Rev. 4:1–2
4. John 8:38

C. Suggestions on Becoming Open to Seeing in the Spirit12

1. Be still outwardly and inwardly. Learn to quiet your soul before God. (More on this lesson in the
study guide Consecrated Contemplative Prayer.)
2. Enter a Biblical story using vision. Simply see what you’re reading and pray over the scriptures,
asking the Spirit of revelation to open them up to you.
3. Focus intently on Jesus and the eyes of your heart will be enlightened and faith will be ignited (Eph.
1:18–29).
4. In intercession for others or whatever circumstance, see the person for whom you are praying and
allow Christ to enter the circumstances.
5. Ask God to speak to you when you’re awake and when you’re asleep (Ps. 127:2), then record a
summary of it. (More on this in the lesson “Journaling: A Tool of Discerning God’s Voice.”)
6. Speaking in tongues (praying in the Spirit) open up communication with the Holy Spirit and allow
images to arise within.
7. Quiet prayer and meditation opens you up to reflective insights that can form a vision.
8. In times of praise and worship the eyes of your heart may be opened and you can see what you’re
singing. Praise magnifies the Lord and He is enthroned by the praises of His people (Ps 22:3; 9:11).

III. LEVELS OF VISION

Detailed materials are available on this subject in the study guide,Understanding Supernatural Encounters.

A. Internal Vision

1. Zech. 1–6; 4:1 – Zechariah’s night visions were most likely received this way, as the prophet was
awakened in preparation for the visions.
2. Dan. 7:1,13–14 – These profound visions were called “visions in the mind.”
3. When the face of a friend or relative pops into our mind, then we know we must pray for them.
These snap shot picture forms of revelation from the Holy Spirit are used to urge us to pray.

B. External Vision

1. Elisha saw the hosts of God encompassing the city of Dothan in II Kings 6:17. He then prayed that
the servant’s eyes would like-wise be opened.
2. Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the heavens open and Jesus standing at the right hand of God in
Acts 7:55–56.

C. Visions While in a Trance or a Dream

1. Peter received a vision while in a trance – Acts 10:10–23.

V. GREEK WORDS FOR VISIONARY STATES14

The following are ten different Greek words that each describes a different aspect of visionary revelation.

A. Onar – Matt. 1:20; 2:12,13,19, 22; 27:19

It is a common word for “dream.” It is a vision seen in sleep as opposed to waking.

B. Enupnion – Acts 2:17; Jude 8

It is a vision seen in sleep. It stresses the givenness, almost surprise quality, of what is received in
sleep.

C. Horama – Matt. 17:9; Acts 7:31; 9:10,12; 10:3,17,19; 11:5; 12:9; 16:9–10; 18:9
It is translated “vision.” It can refer to visions of the night or sleeping experiences, as well as to
waking visions.
D. Opasis – Acts 2:17; Rev. 9:17
This can signify the eye as the organ of sight, an appearance of any kind, even a spectacle.

E. Optasia – Lk. 1:22; 24:23; Acts 26:19; II Cor. 12

It is translated “vision”. It has the sense of self-disclosure, of “letting oneself be seen.”

F. Ekstasis – Mk. 5:42; Lk. 5:26; Mk. 16:8; Acts 3:10; 10:10; 11:5; 22:17
We derive the English word “ecstasy” from this. It literally means “standing aside from oneself, being
displaced or over against oneself,” and ordinarily there is a sense of amazement, confusion and even
extreme terror.

G. Ginomai en pneumati – Rev. 1:10; Matt. 4:1; Mk. 1:12; Lk. 4:1; Lk. 1:41.
This is translated “to become in Spirit.” This refers to the state in which one could see visions and be
informed or spoken to directly by the Spirit.

H. Ephisteni, paristeni – Acts 23:11; 27:23; Lk. 1:11; Acts 10:30; 16:9
This simply refers to the fact that some reality stands by in the night or in the day.

I. Blepo and eido – Rev. 1:2,11; Mk. 9:9; Lk. 9:36

It means “to see” or “to perceive.” These words are used to mean “see” in the normal outer sense, yet
are also used to refer to seeing in the spiritual sense.

J. Apokalupsis – Rev. 16:25; I Cor. 14:6,26; II Cor. 12:1,7; Gal. 2:2

Translated “revelation,” it literally means disclosure, divine uncovering or revelation.

VI. CLOSING

Let us each pray that the eyes of our heart will be enlightened that we might see. Dr. David Yonggi Cho
has stated, “The language of the Holy Spirit is dreams and visions.” Watchman Nee said, “The picture is
the Holy Spirit’s memory.” Let us learn to use the natural and supernatural tools the Lord has given us and
see what God is doing.

Lesson Seven:
Vision – The Power that Sustains
I. SCRIPTURAL REVIEW ON BEING A PEOPLE OF VISION
Read the following scriptures and then the brief explanation that follows.

A. Primary Verse – Proverbs 29:18

Where there is no vision (revelation) the people perish (are unrestrained). We must learn to set a goal
or target in front of our eyes to gaze upon. When you aim at something you will surely hit it! Therefore,
let us set our sights and aim at God’s goals. Phil. 3:13–15

B. II Kings 6:14–17
Elisha saw the host of God encompassing the city of Dothan and was therefore strengthened in God.
He knew there were more with us than those with the enemy (in the world).

C. Zechariah 4:1–7
Zechariah was roused by an Angel and was asked what he saw. He gave the right, humble, true
answer. He realized the Lord also had the interpretation of the revelation and asked, “What is this?”
God response was “It is not by might, it’s not by power, but it is by the Spirit says the Lord.” (Zech.
4:6)

D. Daniel 7:1–13
This shows the progression of how Daniel worked with revelation. (See the lesson on “The Purpose of
Prophetic Revelation.”) He recorded a summary of it and kept looking for a revelation of the Lord
Himself. Let’s learn the lesson and do the same. It is by keeping our vision of Himself clear that we are
sustained in our many labors of life and ministry.

E. Ephesians 1:17–19
Continue to pray this verse over your life. Ask the Holy Spirit on an ongoing basis to give you the Spirit
of Wisdom and Revelation in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Ask that the eyes of your heart
(faith, understanding) be opened like the shutter lens of a camera. Let more “light” come in and God’s
picture (vision) be developed inside. Also pray for a revelation of the greatness of God’s power towards
us who believe and the glorious inheritance in the saints.

F. Acts 7:55–56
As Stephen was stoned, being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of
God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; and he said, Behold, I see the heavens opened up
and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.

Once again let’s keep the lens of our camera focuses in the right direction. Let’s keep looking at Christ
Jesus the Lord!

G. Acts 26:16–20
Paul stands before King Agrippa and proclaims I did not prove to be disobedient to the Heavenly
vision. Let this be our goal as well. Let’s be apprehended by a heavenly vision!

II. DEVELOPING TOUR CAPACITY TO SEE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

A. Quotes from Christian Leaders:

1. Dr. David Yonggi Cho – “The language of the Holy Spirit is dream and vision” – As Dr. Cho teaches
we must learn to look past the temporal into the eternal – into the fourth dimension.
2. Watchman Nee – “The picture is the Holy Spirit’s memory.”

B. Jesus Our Model

1. John 5:19,20
Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only
what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father
loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things
than these.”

Jesus did nothing of Himself. He only did those things He saw the Father doing. This is our model
and example. Let us “look to see” what our Father is initiating and respond to His activity.

2. John 8:38
I speak the things which I have seen with my Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard
from your Father. We each respond to the authorities that govern us. Let’s look to our Father and do
what he is doing.

C. Lessons from the Life of Jacob

To properly understand this following section it will be necessary to read each of the scripture
passages listed.

1. Genesis 30:31–36
Jacob and Laban divide the flocks. Jacob takes all the speckled, spotted, and black lambs. Laban is left
with the pure ones.
2. Genesis 30:37,39
Jacob places fresh rods of almond (tree symbolizes authority) and peeled white stripes in them. He
placed them at the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink. The flocks then brought forth
striped, speckled and spotted offspring.
3. Genesis 30:40–43
Jacob prospers exceedingly as the strong sheep produce the desired result. The principle is VISION IS
THE POWER THAT SUSTAINS. What you keep in front of your eyes will determine your outcome.
4. Genesis 31:6–13
Jacob is now vindicated. God shows him in a dream (vs. 1–12) that this is His way of restoring Jacob’s
fortune.

III. THE PRINCIPLE OF PRESENTATION

A. Romans 6:13
Present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead and your members as instruments of
righteousness to God. To whom we present our “members” (individual parts) they become a slave. If
we present them to righteousness, then they become a slave to righteousness; if to sin then they
become a slave to sin.

B. Ephesians 1:17–19
With this principle in mind, let us present our members (individual parts) to the Lord to be His slaves.
Let us now present our “eyes” to be His slaves. The eye is the window of the soul. Remember, what we
keep in front of our eyes we become. Let us now present our eyes (minds, heart etc.) and ask for the
spirit of revelation to be granted.

C. II Kings 6:17
O Lord, open the eyes of your servant(s) that they might see.

Take these verses and others and regularly ask the Lord to do what only He can. Ask Him to give you
the VISION: FOR IT IS THE POWER THAT SUSTAINS!

9. Write out and memorize Proverbs 29:18, Ephesians 1:17–19.

10. What was the primary point you learned from this lesson?
Lesson Eight:
Dream Language
I. INTRODUCTION

Dreams are one of the three different avenues of visionary revelation the Holy Spirit uses to speak into our
lives. My book,Dream Language with corresponding study guide,Exploring the Nature and Gift of Dreams
covers this topic in detail. This lesson summarizes the subject of dreams. The other two means of visionary
revelation – visions and trances – are covered in more detail in the study guide,Understanding
Supernatural Encounters and in my book,The Seer.

Dreams are closely associated with visions, but dreams, of course, occur during the sleeping hours and
visions happen while one is fully awake or conscious. Numbers 12:6 states, “If there be a prophet among
you, I the Lord God will make Myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.”
While dreams are a specific portion of the prophetic ministry, they are not limited to the prophetically
gifted. Joel 2:28 again reveals to us that dreams are a sign post of the Holy Spirit’s outpouring: And it shall
come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh… your old men will dream dreams…”
It is time for the Church to return to a Biblical understanding of dreams as an avenue of discerning God’s
voice.

II. BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF GODLY DREAMS

A. Dreams to Prophets

1. God spoke in a dream to Abraham (Gen. 15:12–17), who was a patriarchal prophet (Gen. 20:7).
2. God spoke through dreams to Jacob (Gen. 28:12; 31:10), who was also declared to be a patriarchal
prophet (Psalms 105:15).
3. God spoke to Prophet Daniel as listed in lesson 7 in this guide.

B. Heathen Received Dreams from God

1. Abimelech – Gen. 20:3

2. Laban – Gen. 31:24
3. Midianite – Judges 7:13–14
4. Pharaoh’s butler and baker – Gen. 40:5
5. Pharaoh – Gen. 41:7,15–26
6. Nebuchadnezzar – Dan. 2:1,4,36
7. Wise men – Matt. 2:12
8. Pilate’s wife – Matt. 27:19

C. God’s People Who Were Not Prophets Received Dreams

1. Joseph – Gen. 37:5,9–10,20

2. Solomon – I Kings 3:5
3. Joseph – Matt. 1:20

III. PRESENT DAY EXAMPLES OF DREAMS

A. J. Gordon
Boston evangelical preacher – This prestigious minister received a dream of Christ attending his
Sunday church service; As a result of this dream Rev. Gordon radically changed his approach to
ministry.

B. Abraham Lincoln
He had a dream just days before his assassination concerning his impending death. Perhaps this was
used to prepare President Lincoln for eternity.

C. James Goll’s Eagle Dream

At a critical time in the U.S political history, I was given a dream of a tiring eagle (representative of
America) in flight. The question came, “How long will the eagle remain in flight?” The answer
proceeded, “As long as the wind is blowing the eagle will remain in flight!” Let us therefore pray for
the winds of the Holy Spirit to continue.

IV. DREAM LANGUAGE15

A. Dreams Are the Language of Emotions and Contain Much Symbolism

We must learn to take our interpretations first from scripture, and then from our own life. God is
consistent with His symbolic language. How He spoke in Genesis will be similar to the symbols and
types in the book of Revelation. This holds true in our own life as well.

B. Classification of Symbols
1. Symbolic actions – Eph. 2:6; Ps. 10:1; Heb. 10:11–12
2. Symbolic colors – Rev. 3:4–5; 6:2–6; 19:8
3. Symbolic creatures – Rev. 12:9; Gen. 3:14; Lk. 13:31–32
4. Symbolic directions – Lk. 10:15,30; Gen. 12:10–13:1; Jer. 1:14
5. Symbolic names – I Sam. 25:25; John 1:41–42
6. Symbolic numbers – Lk. 10:1; II Cor. 13:1; Deut. 19:15
7. Symbolic objects – Matt. 16:18; Ps. 18:2; I Cor. 10:4

C. Symbolic Colors

1. Amber – glory of God – Ez. 1:4, 8:2

2. Black – sin, death, and famine – Lam. 4:8; Rev. 6:5; Jer. 8:21
3. Blue – heaven; Holy Spirit – Num. 15:38
4. Crimson/Scarlet – blood atonement; sacrifice – Isa. 1:18; Lev.14:52; Josh. 2:18,21
5. Purple – kingship; royalty – Jn. 19:2; Judges 8:26
6. Red – bloodshed; war – Rev. 6:4, 12:3; II Kings 3:22
7. White – purity, light, righteousness – Rev. 6:2; 7:9; 19:8

D. Basic Principles of Interpretation of Numbers

If the student follows these principles, he will be preserved from error and extreme.

1. The simple numbers of 1–13 often have spiritual significance.

2. Multiples of these numbers, or doubling or tripling, carries basically the same meaning, only they
intensify the truth.
3. The first use of the number in scripture generally conveys its spiritual meaning.
4. Consistency of interpretation. God is consistent, and what a number means in Genesis, it means
through all scripture to Revelation.
5. The spiritual significance is not always stated, but may be veiled, or hidden, or seen by comparison
with other scriptures.
6. Generally there are good and evil, true and counterfeit, godly and satanic aspects in numbers.

E. Individual Numbers and Their Symbolic Meaning

1. One – God, beginning, source (Gen. 1:1; Mk. 6:33)

2. Two – witness, testimony (Jn. 8:17; Mt. 18:16; Dt. 17:6)
3. Three – Godhead, divine completeness (Ez. 14:14–18; Dan. 3:23–24)
4. Four – earth, creation, winds, seasons (Gen.2:10; Mk.16:15; I Cor.15:39)
5. Five – cross, grace, atonement (Gen. 1:20–23; Lv. 1:5; Eph. 4:11)
6. Six – man, beast, Satan (Gen. 1:26–31; I Sam. 17:4–7; Num. 35:15)
7. Seven – perfection, completeness (Heb. 6:1–2; Jud. 14; Josh. 6)
8. Eight – new beginning (Gen. 17; I Pet. 3:20; II Pet. 3:8)
9. Nine – finality, fullness (Matt.27:45; Gen.7:1–2; Gal. 5:22; I Cor. 12:1–12)
10. Ten – law, government (Gen. 1; Dan. 2; Ex. 34:28)
11. Eleven – disorganization, lawlessness, Antichrist (Dan. 7:24; Gen. 32:22)
12. Twelve – divine government, apostolic fullness (Ex. 28:21; Mt.10:2–5; Lv. 24:5–6)
13. Thirteen – rebellion, backsliding, apostasy (Gen. 14:4; 10:10; I Kings 11:6)

(Refer to the book, Interpreting the Symbols and Types by Kevin Conner.)

V. INSPIRATION

A. Dreams May Come from Three Main Sources:

1. Demonic
2. Soulish
3. The Holy Spirit

B. Removing Things from Our Home

There are occasions that we must also remove certain cultic, occultic, or even soulish-tie objects from
our home before our sleep will be sweet and clean. Let us cleanse our home in the natural and close all
demonic entrances in Jesus’ Name.

C. Deuteronomy 13:1–5
Does the experience lead you into a deeper relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ! We must have
more than a profound experience. We must be rooted and grounded in Jesus.

D. Gifts of Discerning of Spirits

This gift of the Holy Spirit now becomes extremely valuable at this point. We must learn to distinguish
what the motivating spiritual force behind certain manifestation, revelations and experiences is. Let’s
not be seduced! But let us be wise and cultivate the fear of the Lord and obedience and worship the
God of dreams not the dream of God. (For more on the subject of discerning of spirits see the study
guide “Releasing Spiritual Gifts.” Also study the lesson on “Judging Revelation” found in this study
guide to give you a deeper foundation.
Appendix One:
Interpreting Symbols
I. DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN TYPES AND SYMBOLS16

A. Types are to be viewed as a select group of symbols having prophetic and foreshadowing
characteristics.

1. Symbol: a representation, one thing standing for another.

2. Type: a prophetic representation, one thing prefiguring another.

B. Types are to be viewed as prophetic symbols. This is not to say that all symbols used in prophecy
are types. For example: Daniel 7 is prophetic of Gentile kingdoms, which are symbolized in this passage as
“beasts.” These beasts are not types (prophetic symbols), but rather are symbols used in prophecy. A type
is prophetic in and of itself and does not depend upon prophetic language for its prophetic import (e.g.
Gen. 22 provides us with a type having prophetic import without prophetic language).

C. A symbol may represent a thing, either past, present, or future.

A type is essentially a prefiguring of something future from itself.

D. A symbol is a figure of something either past, present, or future.

A type is a figure of that which is to come.

E. A symbol has in itself no essential reference to time.

A type has inherent in itself a reference to time.

F. A symbol is designed to represent certain characteristics or qualities in that which it represents.

A type is designed to be a pre-ordained representation of something or someone to come.

G. A symbol, to be interpreted, requires a pointing out of the characteristics, qualities, marks, or features
common to both the symbol and that which it symbolizes.
A type, to be interpreted, generally requires a setting forth of an extended analogy between the type and
that which it typifies.

II. SCRIPTURAL EXAMPLES

A. Symbols
1. The rock in Psa. 18:2 is a symbol, not a type.
2. The candlesticks in Rev. 1:20 are symbols, not types.
3. The lamb in John 1:29 is a symbol, not a type.
4. The rainbow in Gen. 9:13–16 is a symbol, not a type.
5. The olive trees in Zech. 4:3 are symbols, not types.
6. The color white in Rev. 19:8 is a symbol, not a type.
7. The number 666 in Rev. 13:18 is a symbol, not a type.

B. Types
1. Adam in Rom. 5:14 is a type, not a symbol.
2. Animal sacrifices in Lev. 1–5 are types, not symbols.
3. The offices of Prophet, Priest, and King in I Kings 1:34 are types, not symbols.
4. The Tabernacle of Moses in Ex. 25–40 is a type, not a symbol.
5. Jonah’s experience in the fish in Matt. 12:39–41 is a type, not a symbol.

III. CONCLUSION

It must be recognized that types may involve symbols, but symbols – of themselves – are never types.

In Exodus 12, the historical event of the Feast of Passover is a type of Christ and His Church. Within this
type there are symbolic elements such as the lamb, the hyssop, the unleavened bread, and the bitter
herbs, but these by themselves, are not types.

In Exodus 17, the historical event of the smiting of the rock is a type of the crucifixion of Christ. Within
this type, there are symbolic elements such as the rock and the rod, which by themselves are not types.

The above illustrations show the interrelatedness of type and symbols to be such that, while symbolism
may be used in typology, the converse is never true.

Journaling – A Tool of Discerning God’s Voice
I. INTRODUCTION

Journaling is a biblical method that can be used to help one grow in discernment of the voice of God in his
heart. It has been a most helpful tool for me. Journaling is simply keeping notes of one’s prayers, what one
senses to be God’s answers, and recording what you sense the Holy Spirit is “saying” to you through the
various channels as shared in the previous lessons. It is clearly a common biblical experience. In I Chron.
28:12–19, we have an example of journaling that did not become scripture, thus setting forth the pattern
for our experience today.

God is speaking to His children much of the time. However, we do not differentiate His voice from our own
thoughts, and therefore, we are timid about stepping out in faith. If we clearly learn to discern His voice
speaking within us, we will be much more confident in our walk in the Spirit. Journaling is a way of sorting
out God’s thoughts.

One of the greatest benefits of using a journal during your communion with the Lord is that it allows you
to freely receive the spontaneous flow of ideas that come to mind, in faith believing that they are from
Jesus, without short-circuiting them by subjecting them to rational and sensory doubt. You can write in
faith, believing they are from the Lord, knowing that you will be able to test them later (“Judging
Revelation” will be covered in a later lesson in this guide). For many, the simple discipline of recording
revelation will be one of the missing links in your walk of hearing God’s voice. Continuity of language,
divine suggestions and reminders, and also learning the proper interpretation of symbols will occur as we
use journaling as a means of discerning God’s voice.

II. LESSONS FROM HABAKKUK

A. Habakkuk 2:1–3
“I will stand on my guard post and station myself on the rampart; and I will keep watch to see what He
will speak to me, and how I may reply when I am reproved. Then the Lord answered me and said,
‘Record the vision and inscribe it on tablets that the one who reads it may run. For the vision is yet for
the appointed time; it hastens towards the goal, and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; for it
will certainly come, it will not delay.’”

B. Habakkuk Is Seeking a Spiritual Experience

He is seeking to hear the Rhema of God directly in his heart so that he can understand what he sees
around him. First of all, he goes to a quiet place where he can be alone and become still. Secondly, he
quiets himself within by “watching to see” what God would say. Last of all, when God begins to speak,
the first thing He says is, “Record the vision.” Habakkuk wrote down what he was sensing in his heart.

III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS IN JOURNALING17

A. Lessons in Becoming Still

1. Biblical basis – Psalm 46:10

2. First, remove external distractions. Mark 1:35 – Jesus went to a lonely place to pray.
3. Second, we must quiet our own inner being.
a) Write down thoughts of things to do later.
b) Release personal tensions and anxieties to the Lord I Pet. 5:7.
c) Focus your meditating on the person of Jesus.
4. In becoming still, I am not trying to do anything. I simply want to be in touch with my Divine Lover,
Jesus. I am centering on this moment of time and experiencing Him in it.
5. Removing inner noise (voices, thoughts, pressures, etc.).

PROBLEM SOLUTION
Thoughts of things to do. Write them down so you won’t forget them.
Thoughts of sin-

consciousness.
Mind flitting about. Speak to your mind – say “No!” Focus on a vision of Jesus with you.

touch with your heart.
Realize that at times when you are doing automatic activities (driving, bathing,
You need more time!
exercising, washing the dishes, etc.) are ideal times to hear from God.

B. Watching to See
In some way Rhema is couched in vision. Habakkuk 1:1 says, “…the burden which Habakkuk the
prophet saw.” He quieted himself to watch to see what the Lord would speak. As we have seen,
focusing the eyes of our heart upon God causes us to become inwardly still, it raises our level of faith
and expectancy, and it makes us more fully open to receive from God.

C. Recording the Vision

Practical Suggestions for Journaling:

1. Find your quality time (if possible) and use it. Avoid times when you are sleepy, fatigued, or anxious.
2. A simple spiral notebook is fine. Even a tape recorder can be good.
3. This is a personal journal. Grammar, neatness, or spelling is not critical issues.
4. Date all entries.
5. Include dreams, visions, interpretations, personal feelings, and emotions as well.
6. Expect God’s love to be affirmed towards you and then, as you receive it, expect the gifts of the Holy
Spirit to be in operation.
7. Rhema is tested against Logos. Have a good knowledge of the Bible so that God can draw upon that
knowledge as you record.

IV. WISDOM WAYS WITH JOURNALING

A. Counterfeits Exist
Holy Spirit inspired journaling and automatic writing are not the same. Obviously, automatic writing is
Satan’s counterpart to journaling. Those who have experienced automatic writing say, “A spirit comes
and controls their hand,” whereas in journaling, there is a spontaneous flow of ideas birthed by God in
their hearts and then recorded in the notebook by a free hand that is under their own control. The fruit
of the Holy Spirit is self-control.

B. Safeguards for Your New Adventure

1. Cultivate a humble, teachable spirit. Never allow the attitude of, “God told me and that’s all there is
to it.” All revelation is to be tested. Mistakes will be made. Accept that as part of the learning process
and go on.
2. Have a good knowledge of the Bible. Remember, Rhema is based on Logos. The revelatory never
conflicts with the written word!
3. God primarily gives revelation for the area in which He has given responsibility and authority. A
wife receives revelation about her home and children. A husband receives revelation for the home and
business. A pastor will receive revelation for the church he tends. Look for revelation in areas of your
responsibility. Stay away from ego trips that motivate you to seek revelation for areas in which God
has not placed you.
4. Be fully committed to a local body and some type of practical covering. Walk together with others.
Realize that until your guidance is confirmed, it should be regarded as, “What you think God is
saying.”
5. Evaluate whether your recording is leading you to a greater and more mature ability to love and
share Christ. If your experiences produce fear and become destructive to you, you are contacting the
wrong spirits and you should seek counsel immediately.
6. Realize, that if you submit to God and resist the devil, that he must flee from you! You can trust the
guide of the Holy Spirit to lead you into truth.
7. Over a period of time, you will begin to learn your spiritual alphabet and you will mature in your
understanding of the revelation you receive. Add this tool of journaling to your “tool box” and you will
mature the grace of discerning His voice.

C. Closing Prayer:
God, may You teach me to clearly discern the flow of Your voice and vision, and lead me in Your
wisdom applications of recording You reveal, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Lesson Ten:
Tools for Interpreting Revelation
I. FORMS IN WHICH PROPHETIC REVELATION COMES

When Albert Einstein was asked where his theory of relativity had originated, he attributed it to a dream
he experienced in his youth. According to the story, he was riding in a sled which started going faster and
faster until it approached the speed of light, at which time the stars broke into fantastic colors. He said
that the rest of his life was a meditation on that dream.

There are nine general forms in which prophetic revelation comes. We will look at the first three listed
below in this lesson.
- Scripture
- Dreams
- Visions
- Trances
- Visitations
- Translation
- Verbal Communication
- Physical Sensations
- Inner Witness

A. Scripture18
Thereare two forms of revelation which come from reading the Word of God.

1. Illumination: Scriptural understanding given by the Spirit.

a) Future: Daniel 9:2 – Daniel understood the prophecy of Jeremiah concerning the “70 years” (Jer.
25:12; 29:10).
b) Present: Acts 2:16 – Peter recognized the enactment of the prophecy of Joel (Joel 2:28–32).

2. Inspiration (Rhema): Personal application of scripture.

An individual, when reading or meditating upon the Word of God, has a verse “leap off the page” and
has a revelation given to him or her through the inspiration of hope, faith, and love that is granted.

3. The true “word of the Lord” does not compete but complements the “Word of God.”

B. Dreams: The Sleep Language

Dreams have been used by God since the beginning of mankind as a means of revelation being
granted. Scripture tell us that a prophet is a dreamer of dreams (Deut. 13:1 and Num. 12:6). (See my
book Dream Language for more on this subject.)

There are two main categories of dreams individuals might experience: Dreams of Self-Disclosure
(sometimes called Internal Dreams), and Dreams of Outside Events (sometimes called External
Dreams).

1. Dreams of Self-Disclosure (Internal Dreams)19

a) Healing dreams – These bring forgiveness and love.
b) Cleansing dreams – “shower off” day-to-day effects of living in a fallen world. Flushes out your
inner consciousness.
c) Calling dreams – Reveal purpose, vocation, invitation, or anointing – tell you what God wants
you to do in times to come. Release guidance.
d) Warning dreams – Where we are told not to do certain activity.
e) False dreams – Inspired by the enemy to sow confusion, unrest, unbelief, hopelessness, etc.
(Zech. 10:2; Jer. 29:8,23,26–27).
f) Body dreams – Sometimes the condition of the body determines the dream (illness, pregnancy,
etc.).
g) Self-condition dreams – These tell you the present condition of your life; where you stand with
Him; areas where change is needed.
h) Exhortation dreams – These give you courage to continue on in God’s task (Gideon – Judges
7:15).
i) Warfare dreams – In this category we might be engaged against the powers of darkness yet
while sleeping.

2. Dreams of Outside Events (External Dreams)

a) These are dreams concerning outside events that have to do with the world, church, friends,
family, etc.
b) This category represents (for some people), a small portion (2–5%) of their dreams only.
c) These dreams are usually given to tell us to pray.
d) Some prophetically-gifted people have primarily external dreams. Though this normally occurs
only after God has given them many internal (self-disclosure) dreams and worked all kinds of
things out of their lives or by sovereign gifting.
C. Visions: The Picture Language of God
Visions are one of the ways that God makes Himself known (Num. 12:6). Visions are closely associated
with dreams, the difference being that dreams are typically symbolic while visions can be more literal
in their interpretation.

Prophets vary in the number and degree of their visions. Daniel, Ezekiel, and Isaiah had many while
Zechariah, Jeremiah, and Amos had few.

1. Internal Vision20
These are those seen with the inner eye. Many times these come at night laced within our dreams.
These are visions of the mind with our eyes closed.
a) Daniel had visions at night within his mind. These were internal (Daniel 4:5,10,13; 7:7).
b) Paul the Apostle had an angel speak to him in a vision (Acts 16:9).

2. External Visions
These are visions seen with the eyes wide open. During this time, the spiritual realm is opened up. The
external and heavenly is seen. It appears that no time limits exist here.
a) Elisha’s servant has his eyes opened to see the army of God (II Kings 6:17).
b) Ezekiel saw an open heaven and the throne of God (II Kings 6:17).
c) Daniel received these visions as well as recorded them in Daniel 8:3 and 10:7.

D. Reference Materials
Other materials have been prepared to cover the other forms that revelation comes in. See the list
below and also the Reference Materials at the back of this guide.

II. UNDERSTANDING DREAMS AND VISIONS

A. Revelation Is Full of Symbolism!

As dreams, visions and revelations are full of symbolism, they need to be viewed much the same as
parables. Ask the Lord to show you the central issue. When dreams etc. are broken down into too
many details, the meaning becomes increasingly obscure.

B. Three Realms for Interpretation of Symbols21

1. The first place to look is in scripture. The Bible is full of parables and allegories from which to draw
types, shadows, and symbols. Examples like the mustard seed being faith; incense being the prayers of
the saints, seed representing the “Word of God”, and the candlesticks being the Church.

2. Dream symbols are often colloquial expressions which fill our memory bank. They become turned
into pictorial language by the Holy Spirit. God takes the “sayings” and idioms and uses them to speak
spiritual truth. An example is Gideon in Judges 7:9–15, where a barley cake appears. Gideon grew up
as a thresher of wheat and barley.

3. The third realm of symbols comes from our own personal revelatory alphabet. In this case, the
object or symbol does not mean the same to you as it would to others. Such as:
a) Animals, birds and fish.
(1) Isaiah – the Messiah is presented as a Lamb to slaughter.
(2) John – Jesus is a shepherd and his disciples are presented as little lambs.
(3) Revelation – the Lamb is now a Conqueror.
b) People who appear in our dreams can be interpreted on three levels:
(1) Literal,
(2) Symbolic,
(3) Meaning of the name. What does the person represent to me? What is the outstanding
characteristic of the individual?
c) Birth and death – This can be interpreted on three levels:
(1) Literal,
(2) What you care for is growing or dying,
(3) It is spiritual – a new beginning.
d) Children’s dreams
What do you do with nightmares? At times we need to simply rebuke the devourer. Other times we
need to “cleanse the house.” Yet on other occasions we must pray and ask the Lord for the root
issue and we must deal with it accordingly.
e) Sexual dreams
(1) Cleansing the house of defilement of flesh and spirit.
(2) Portray a call into intimacy.
(3) Reveals desire/passion – natural issues of life.

C. Actual Vs. Visual22

Insights, revelations, warnings and prophecies from the Lord may come in supernatural visual dreams or
in actual dreams.

1. Visual Dreams
These “visual revelations” do not have as much of an active participation of the person’s spirit/soul as
an “actual” visitation from the Lord. The person simply observes and receives the message.

These visual dreams may contain more symbols, mysteries, and obscurities than do other types of
revelation.

2. Actual Dreams
These supernatural “actual” dreams are those in which God’s tangible presence is evident in some
way. To see the Lord in a dream is visual, but for the Lord to manifest Himself to you in a dream is
actual.

If you dream something angelic and you sense that same presence when you wake up, it was more
than just a visual dream. The angels were actually there. But if there was no angelic presence
when you awaken, then the dream was simply visual, though it may still contain a message from
God.

A manifestation of blessing, healing, deliverance, or endowment of power, requires an actual

visitation from the Lord in some form. Such manifestations involve an impartation of God’s
anointing which will manifest in the natural realm.

Therefore, an actual impartation occurs and the person actively participates though his body is
asleep.

III. TIPS FOR INTERPRETING

A. Things to Remember

1. Most of all, dreams should be interpreted on a personal basis first (John 10:3).

2. Most dreams should not be taken literally. They need interpreting (Daniel 1:17; Genesis 40:8)

3. God will use familiar terms you know (Matt. 4:19).

4. Ponder on the dream or revelation and ask the Holy Spirit for insight (Daniel 7:8; 8:15–16; Luke
2:19; I Cor. 2:10–12).

5. Ask the Holy Spirit what the certain thought, word, or issue is in the revelation. Reduce the dream
to its simplest form. What is the main thought? What object or thought occurs most often? Frame it out
like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Once you get the frame, the rest of it will fit together. What is the central
“Rhema” word? Not all the details are important or have meaning.

6. Search it out in the Word. Dreams from the Lord will never go against His Word. (Proverbs 25:2).

7. What did you sense and feel from the dream? Was it a good or evil presence, fear, love, concern,
hopelessness, disappointment? What was the primary emotion?

8. Relate the dreams to your circumstances.

9. Consecutive dreams often have the same or similar meaning (Gen. 41:1–7; 25–31). God will speak
the same message more than once.

10. What are the colors? Is everything black and white and one main object in color?

11. Interpretations can be three levels.

a) Personal
b) Church
(1) Congregation
(2) City church
(3) Church in a nation
(4) Global Body of Christ
c) National and international, these can be governmental in nature.

12. More than one interpretation can come forth from one dream. Just as with scripture, there is the
historical context as well as the personal, present implication. So it is with dreams etc. It might be a
general word for the church with specific applications for yourself (or others).

13. Some dreams may only be understood in the future. They unfold over time.

14. Write down the summary; date it; where you were; the time if you woke up from it; the main
emotions and a possible interpretation in a journal.

15. The key is question, question, and question. (See Zechariah 4 as an example of “how to respond” to
a revelatory experience. Humility is the marked by teachableness.)

B. Life Is More than Dreams!

Ecclesiastes 5:7 says not to base your life on dreams alone! “For in many dreams and in many words
there is emptiness” (vanity) – Rather fear God!

Lesson Eleven:
Judging Revelation
I. INTRODUCTION

God still speaks today through many different avenues: channels of visions, dreams, inner knowings, the
audible and inner voice, journaling, creation, and most importantly, through the Logos canon of Scripture.
The interpretation of revelation makes it imperative that we pray for the spirit of wisdom, understanding,
and the counsel of the Lord. In this lesson, we will probe into the necessary subject of “Judging
Revelation.”

It is absolutely imperative that you know and study the Bible so you have an absolute standard against
which to test all spiritual experiences. The Bible is our absolute, infallible, unchanging standard of truth.
Just as you learn to crawl before you learn to walk, so too, before you learn to work with Rhema, you
should know the Logos. You should, at least, have a working knowledge of the New Testament and be
working on the rest of the Bible if you are going to investigate Rhema revelation in depth. Otherwise, you
open yourself up to easy deception.

God has also given us one another, and together, we are the Body of Christ. We find safety in our
relationship to a Bible-believing fellowship. Eph. 5:21 states, “Submit yourselves one to another,” and goes
on to delineate the various areas of covering God has placed in our lives. “In the multitude of counselors
there is safety”(Prov. 11:14). In an age of lawlessness, we must be under the umbrella covering of the
Lord, His Word, and the local church to protect us from the spirit of the world. Let us not be proud
individuals “doing our thing,” but let us be “humble servants committed to a local expression of Christ’s
Body, diligently studying the scriptures, daily in prayer, and led by the Spirit of Truth into His purposes
and individual will for our lives.”

Two foundational questions should first be answered positively in our search to discern God’s voice:

1. Are you regularly studying the scriptures and maintaining a life of prayer?
2. Are you a functional member of a local Christian congregation?

Let us lay these two building blocks firmly in place as we investigate the principles of testing spiritual
experiences.

My prayer is that this lesson on “Judging Revelation” will add godly wisdom and discernment to our lives.
Remember to “examine everything carefully. Hold fast to that which is good.”(I Thess. 5:21)

II. SOURCES OF REVELATION

The scriptures teach us that revelation can possibly come from any one of these three sources:

A. The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the only true source of revelation. Read II Pet. 1:21. The Holy Spirit “moved” these
prophets. The Greek word for “moved” is phero, which means “to be borne along” or even “to be
driven along as a wind” (Acts 27:15–17).

B. The Human Spirit

Read Ezek. 13:1–6; Jer. 23:16. This is one who is speaking out of his own heart. His revelation is not
born from God, but is out of his own imaginations of his spirit or soul. Ezek. 13:1–2 says, “…that
prophesy, out of their own hearts… Woe unto the foolish prophets that follow their own spirit and have
seen nothing.”

C. The Evil Spirit

The source of this instance is satanic as a lying spirit. Consider Acts 16:16–18 about the slave girl with
the spirit of divination. She spoke truth but it was from a wrong source. Paul addresses the spirit of
divination and commands it to leave her. (See the lesson “Discerning of Spirits” in the study guide
Releasing Spiritual Gifts for more teaching on this subject.)

III. DEALING WITH MIXTURE

Revelation can even be a mixture of any of these sources. This is possible because men, as prophetic
mouthpieces, are yet in an imperfect state. No prophetic ministry, except that of Christ, was ever a perfect
channel.

A. Life of Peter
Read Matt. 16:16–22. One moment Peter gives a strong, current, revelatory word; minutes later he
states that Jesus should never die, go to the cross, etc. (vs. 22). Jesus recognized the latter as Satan
and rebuked Satan as speaking through Peter’s lips (Matt. 16:23). Read also I Thess. 5:20.

B. Things Affecting Your Spirit

For the Christian, God’s Spirit is in union with your spirit (I Cor. 6:17); however, things other than God
can effect and move your spirit and soul.

1. Circumstances of life (I Sam. 1:1–15).

2. Physical, bodily circumstances (I Sam. 30:12).
3. Satan (Jn. 13:2).
4. Man’s undisciplined life (Prov. 16:32).

C. Questions to Ask?
As your mind goes to the work of purifying and Rhema, it should:

1. Look for evidence of influences other than the Spirit of God.

2. Ask, “What is the essence of the Word?”
3. Discern whether you were under the control of the Holy Spirit as you received your revelation by
asking these questions:
a) Have you presented your life as a living sacrifice?
b) Have you been obedient to His Word?
c) Are you being enlightened with His inspiration?
d) Are you committed to doing His will?
e) Are you yielding your life to praise or critical speech?
f) Are you waiting quietly and expectantly before Him?

D. Test Whether an Image Is from Self, Satan, or God.23

(Taken from Communion with God p. 78, by Mark and Patti Virkler).

1. I am to instantly cut off all pictures put before my mind’s eye by Satan (Matt. 5:28; II Cor. 10:5).
2. I am to present the eyes of my heart to the Lord for Him to fill. In this way, I prepare myself to
receive (Rev. 4:1).
3. The Spirit is to project on my inner screen the flow of vision that He desires (Rev. 4:2).

IV. NINE SCRIPTURAL TESTS24

A. I Corinthians 14:3
But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.

The end purpose of all true prophetical revelation is to build up, to admonish, and to encourage the
people of God. Anything that is not directed to this end is not true prophecy. Consider Jer. 1:5,10. His
commission is at first negative, but then with a promise. I Cor. 14:26 sums it up best – Let all things be
done unto edification.

B. II Timothy 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God.

All true revelation always agrees with the letter and the spirit of scripture. Read II Cor. 1:17–20.
Where the Holy Spirit says, Yea and Amen” in scripture, He also says, “Yea and Amen” in revelation.
He does not contradict Himself.
C. John 16:14
He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and disclose it to you.

All true revelation centers in Jesus Christ, and exalts and glorifies Him. Read Rev. 19:10.

D. Matthew 7:15–16
Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves … you
will know them by their fruits.

True revelation produces fruit in character and conduct that agrees with the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
Read Eph. 5:9 and Gal. 5:22–23. Among aspects of character or conduct that are clearly not the fruit of
the Holy Spirit, we may mention the following: pride, arrogance, boastfulness, exaggeration,
dishonesty, covetousness, financial irresponsibility, licentiousness, immorality, addictive appetites,
broken marriage vows, and broken homes. Any revelation that is responsible for results such as these
is from a channel other than the Holy Spirit.

E. Deuteronomy 18:20–22
If a revelation contains prediction concerning the future, are these predictions fulfilled? If not, with a
few exceptions, the revelation is not from God. Exceptions include:

1. Will of the person involved.

2. National repentance – Nineveh.
3. Messianic predictions (hundreds of years until fulfilled).
4. Note difference between Old and New Testament prophets.

F. Deuteronomy 13:1–5
The fact that a person makes a prediction concerning the future that is fulfilled does not necessarily
prove that that person is moving by Holy Spirit inspired revelation. If such a person, by his own
ministry, turns others away from obedience to the one true God, then that person is false – even if he
makes correct predictions concerning the future.

G. Romans 8:15
For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of
adoption as sons by which we cry out, Abba, Father!

True revelation, given by the Holy Spirit, produces liberty and not bondage. Read also I Cor. 14:33 and
II Tim. 1:7. The Holy Spirit never brings God’s people into a condition where they act like slaves,
motivated by fear and legal compulsion.

H. II Corinthians 3:6
Who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the
letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

True revelation, given by the Holy Spirit, produces life and not death.

I. I John 2:27
And as for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for
anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and
just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

True revelation, given by the Holy Spirit, is attested by the Holy Spirit within the believer. The Holy
Spirit is “the Spirit of Truth” (Jn. 16:13). He bears witness to that which is true, but He rejects that
which is false. This ninth test is the most subjective of them all and must be used in conjunction with
the previous eight objective standards.

V. TEST EVERY SPIRIT TO SEE IF IT BE OF GOD

A. I John 4:1–3
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because
many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God:
Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that
does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard
is coming and even now is already in the world (NIV).

B. Prophecy is NOT Perfect in Its Delivery

Inscripturated revelation was perfect and inerrant; however, revelation does not function on this
sphere of inspiration. Thus, there is always the possibility of mixture in the revelatory word. Read I
Cor.14:29. The fact that prophecy is open for judgment in this age proves its present, imperfect state.
The imperfect state of prophecy is because of the imperfect state of the channel of man through which
it comes.

C. Conclusion: Proving Revelation

1. Judge the content by:

a) The principles of the written Word.
b) Comparing revelation to the written Word.
c) The commandments of the written Word.

2. I Thess. 5:20–21 – Do not despise prophetic utterances, but examine everything carefully; hold fast
to that which is good.

D. The Need for the Gift of Discerning of Spirits

Because the outward appearance of the wolf is disguised under “sheep’s clothing,” the human eye
does not immediately discern the true identity of the wolf. However, there is one animal normally
connected with the protection of sheep which will not be deceived by the “sheep’s clothing.” That
animal is the sheep dog. He is not deceived because he does not judge by his eyesight, but by his sense
of smell. The wolf may look like a sheep, but he still smells like a wolf. In scripture, this sense of
smell, acting independently of the eyesight, sometimes typifies the discernment, which comes through
the Holy Spirit. In Isaiah 11:2–3, the prophet, foreseeing the ministry of Jesus as the Messiah (the
Anointed One), declares that the Spirit of the Lord … shall make him of quick understanding (literally,
quick of scent) in the fear of the Lord: and He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes, neither
reprove after the hearing of His ears.

Those to whom God commits the care of His sheep must likewise, through the Holy Spirit, be “quick of
scent,” so that they will not judge after the sight of their eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of
their ears. In this way, they will not depend merely on the evidence of their senses or the reasoning of
their natural mind, but will quickly detect the false prophets who come among God’s people as “wolves
in sheep’s clothing.”

The sheep dog that fails to bark when the wolf approaches has failed in his responsibility to the flock.
In Isa. 56:10, God says concerning Israel’s watchmen under the old covenant, they are all dumb dogs,
they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, and loving to slumber. These watchmen of Israel failed God
and their people. When the spiritual enemies of God’s people approached, these men remained silent,
and gave no warning to the flock. As a result, God’s people became an easy prey to their enemies. The
same thing has happened many times to God’s people, even in this generation.

Scripture Memorization
9. Write out and memorize II Peter 1:21, I John 2:27.

10. What was the primary point you learned from this lesson?
Lesson Twelve:
Wisdom in Handling Revelation
I. THE NECESSITY OF WISDOM

A. Revelation Is “Hot Stuff”

Watch out! Revelation is “Hot Stuff!” You can be burned by it if you mishandle it. It is like a pot of
boiling water on a stove. You need to put on the mittens of wisdom to carry the cargo to its place of
usefulness and purpose. Otherwise, it will spill on you!

B. After Discerning of Spirits…

After we’ve discerned a situation, we must call forth God’s wisdom administration. It you do not,
through mismanagement of discernment can become a tool of gossip and demise and burn rather than
heal and empower. Remember Proverbs 12:8. A man will be praised according to his insight. Ask for
His insight with wisdom and understanding – the Lord will grant it.

C. Some Possible Applications for Beginners

1. When you’ve received something, turn it into a question. Does this mean anything to do?
2. Turn your revelation into intercession. Pray the inspiration instead of sweating out heavy
perspiration.
3. Submit your impressions (revelation) to trusted counsel (and council). God will not give it all to you.
Trust Him to speak through others as well.
4. Realize, if you’ve received the genuine article, there is a tension. Do I sit on this, or run with it? This
tension is normal and part of your learning curve.
5. Eventually, another test will come. You will be praised (elevated) because of your (really His) gift.
What will you do with these trophies? Bob Mumford, years ago said, “At the end of the day, I present
my trophies to the Lord and I worship Him with them.”
6. Learn the lesson quick and well from Proverbs 29:11, “A fool opens wide his mouth and tells all he
knows.” Ask the Holy Spirit questions. Watch and learn from others. What do I say? To whom do I give
it? When do I release it? Where do I present it? Most of us learn this proverb by experience!

II. DITCHES TO AVOID: THINGS TO BE AWARE OF

A. Second Heaven Revelation

Different groups and individuals use different terms for this. Not everything you receive is a
declaration of what is supposed to come to pass. It is possible that the Holy Spirit could give you
insight into the one of Satan’s schemes or plans. (Paul said we are not to be ignorant of the devil’s
schemes.) Thus the term “Second Heaven Revelation” is sometimes referred to as that information
that derives from the enemy’s camp used to enlighten us so as to prepare us or cut it off from
occurring.

B. Be Careful with Your Curiosity

Is it the Holy Spirit leading you into this experience? Is it passion for Jesus or an enticing spirit leading
you by pulling on your curiosity? The fruit is distinctly different. With an enticing spirit you are left
“beat up.” By God’s invitation you are left enlightened and empowered.

C. Give Your Revelation with Gentleness

Try brokenness. Hard confrontation is the exception, not the norm. Go through the standard
procedures of first speaking, second exhorting and thirdly warning with all authority. This is according
to the pattern of Titus 2:18 (See Galatians 6:1, II Timothy 2:23–26).

D. Realize that Some Words Are Conditional

Some words are given without the condition being spoken! Consider the word to Jonah. Was Ninevah
destroyed in 40 days? Behind every word of judgment stands a merciful God ready to forgive. Again,
consider the example of Amos? He was given five visions of judgment. They were true revelatory
experiences. Yet Amos intercession blocked two of the five words from coming to pass (40%). This
again is an example of a merciful God!

E. Wisdom Shouts the Fear of the Lord

(Proverbs 9:10). Do not use your revelation as a tool of punishment. The Holy Spirit spoke to me once,
“Be careful not to stretch the rod of your mouth out against the House that the Lord builds.”

F. Don’t Borrow and Snatch!

Avoid using others’ revelation as your own as a tool of gaining credibility before man. If necessary, ask
another if you have permission to restate their word. When asked by others about another’s word,
stand secure and simply say, “I don’t know. You will have to consult them.”

G. Beware: You Can Become Tainted by an Evil Report

You can become tainted by an evil report given to you by a person about someone else under the guise
of revelation. Numbers 13 and 14 are important chapters for us to read and learn today! Get washed in
the blood of Jesus from the defilement of gossip and evil reports.

H. Be Alert to the Activity of the “Accuser of the Brethren”

He tries to spew his filthy inspiration on believers. (Revelation12:10 and Proverbs 10:18.)Be alert. The
devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone he may devour (I Peter 5:8).

I. Don’t Throw Away Your Relationship with God

Even in the midst of high-level prophetic activity through others, you must hear God for yourself! Look
to the lessons of I Kings 13. Get your own leading! Don’t let someone else hear for you. You must hear
God for yourself first!

III. FIVE DON’TS

A. Never Replace Hearing through Others as a Substitute

You must hear the voice of the Holy Spirit for Yourself. Never let your hearing through others override
your devotion to the scriptures (I Kings 13, Exodus 20:5). God is a jealous God. He wants you to spend
time with Him! Keep to the basics!

B. Never Lift Up the Vessel Who Brings the Word

Lift up Jesus! Remember, the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Revelations 19:10). Let Jesus
truly be the chief prophet in our midst!

C. Don’t be Naive (Proverbs 14:15)

Do not believe every spirit! Test the spirits to see if they be of God (I John 4:1–6).

D. Don’t Twist the Meaning of the Word

Don’t twist the word to comply with your desires, wishes, hidden agenda, mixed motives, timing or
aspirations. Hold onto the words with open expectancy watching a supernatural God fulfill His words
in an unexpected manner. Ask for His wisdom ways (James 1:5, Psalm 25:4).

E. Do Not Quench the Holy Spirit

I Thessalonians 5:19–21 warns us not to despise prophecy. Counterfeits and mixtures do occur. But do
not be disillusioned. Believe God for His full restoration of the prophetic ministry. It is worth the
journey.

IV. FIVE DOS

A. Earnestly Desire the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Especially desire that you may prophesy (I Corinthians 14:1). Not only does God want to speak to you,
but also He wants to speak through you! Desire the gift of prophecy!

B. Believe God’s Prophets and You’ll Succeed

II Chronicles 20:20 gives us 20–20 vision. Rejoice! What a privilege you have been given. Mix faith
with God’s words and receive the Lord’s results. But place your faith in the “God of the Word,” not in
the “man of the word.”

C. Pray the Promise Back to God

Follow Daniel’s example of reminding God of His Word through intercession (Jeremiah 29:10; Daniel
9:1–19). Bathe the prophetic invitation in prayer. (For further study see my book The Prophetic
Intercessor.)

D. Fight the Good Fight!

Do this by using the spoken “Rhema” word of prophecy as equipment for spiritual battle (I Timothy
1:18). Do spiritual warfare against discouragement, doubt, unbelief and fear thru declaring and
reciting prophecies made concerning you.

E. Seek Confirmation at All Times

Remember, out of the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact is to be confirmed and established
(Deut. 19:15; Matthew 18:16; II Cor. 13:1).
