property. Ans) Temple and Church bells are made up of metals
because metals produce ringing sound when they are struck
hard. This property of metals to produce ringing sound when
struck hard is called sonarosity.

5) Define ductility. Name the most ductile metal


Ans) The property of metals to be drawn into thin wires on
application of force is called ductility. The most ductile metal is
gold.

6) Define metallurgy. List its steps.

Ans) Metallurgy is the sequence of process involved in extracting


metals from its ore.

Procedure- i. Magnesium ribbon was burnt.

ii. Residue was collected in a watch glass


iii. Residue was dissolved in water iv.
Litmus paper was dipped in the solution of residue and water.

Observation-i. Magnesium burns with


white dazzling light. ii. White powdery residue is formed.
iii. Residue get dissolved in water. iv. Red litmus stones
blue in the solution.

Conclusion- Metal oxides when dissolved in water forms


metallic hydroxide which are basic in nature.

Materials required-- Two test tubes

Magnesium ribbon

Dilute
hydrochloric acid
A burning splinter .

Procedure-i. dilute hydrochloric acid was taken in a test you and


few pieces of magnesium ribbon was put in it.
ii. an empty test tube was inverted over the test tube in which
reaction was going on.

iii. Gas produced during the reaction was collected in the inverted
empty test tube and a burning splinter was later brought near its
mouth.

Observation—i. When magnesium ribbon was dipped in dilute


hydrochloric acid bubbles were seen evolving out.

ii. When the burning splinter was brought near the mouth
of the empty test tube in which gas was collected, the gas
started burning with a popping sound.

Conclusion- hydrogen gas burns with a popping sound indicating


the gas present in the test tube is hydrogen.

Sodium is a highly reactive metal which reacts which reacts with

metal and doesn't react with the substances around. So sodium is found in
combine sheet and gold in its native state in nature.

10) Define alloys. How are alloys better than their constituent
metals? Give the composition of duralumin and German silver.
Ans) Alloys are homogenous mixture of two or more metals along
with some non metals.
Alloys have better properties than the constituent metals as they
are harder, stronger, lustrous and resistant to corrosion.
Duralumin - aluminium + copper + manganese +
magnesium. German silver -copper + nickel zinc.

Ans) zinc forms a protective layer over the iron article and

• Why does gold not tarnish easily?
And) Gold is a noble metal which do not react with the
substances around like water atmospheric gases etc so it
doesn't get anished easily.
• What property of gold makes it suitable for making
jewelleries? Ans) Gold is suitable for making jewellery
because it is least reactive and is most malleable and
ductile metal.
• In which scale purity of gold is measured? Ans) Purity of
gold is measured in carats.
