Report

Title: AI-Powered Early Dropout Prediction and Intervention System

Introduction:

Dropout rates remain a critical barrier to achieving Quality Education (SDG 4), especially among
underprivileged students. Traditional methods to identify at-risk students are manual,
subjective, and often ineffective, leading to delayed interventions. This project proposes an AI-
based system to predict potential dropouts early and recommend targeted interventions to
reduce dropout rates and improve educational outcomes.

Problem Statement:

Underprivileged children face higher risks of dropping out due to factors like poor
academic performance, irregular attendance, lack of motivation, and socio-economic
challenges. Schools and NGOs lack data-driven tools to identify these students early
enough for effective support.

Objective:

To design and implement an AI-powered Early Dropout Prediction and Intervention

System that:

 Predicts the likelihood of student dropouts using available data

 Generates actionable insights and intervention recommendations

 Helps schools and NGOs take timely steps to retain students in the education
system
Why This Problem?

This project is essential because it uses AI to proactively identify students at risk of

dropping out, addressing a critical gap in current education systems where manual and
subjective methods often fail to detect such students in time. By providing data-driven
predictions and tailored intervention recommendations, it ensures underprivileged
children receive timely support to continue their education, thereby reducing dropout
rates, improving learning outcomes, and contributing significantly towards achieving
Quality Education (SDG 4) in an equitable and scalable way.

Solution:
Predictive Analytics: ML models analyse student data (attendance, grades, behaviour,
socio-economic data) to predict dropout risk.
Explainable AI: Provides clear, interpretable reasons behind each prediction to build
trust with educators.
Recommendations Engine: Suggests personalized interventions such as extra tutoring,
counselling, parent engagement, or financial support referrals.
User Dashboard: Easy-to-use interface for teachers, NGOs, and administrators to track
at-risk students and intervention outcomes.
Local Language Support: For wider usability in regional schools.

Features:
Dropout Risk Prediction:
Uses AI models to analyse student data (attendance, academic performance,
behaviour, socio-economic factors) to predict the likelihood of dropout with high
accuracy.
User-Friendly Dashboard
Interactive dashboard for teachers, school administrators, and NGOs to view at-risk
students, their risk levels, reasons, and recommended interventions in one place.
Data Upload and Integration
Allows easy data import from excel sheets or integration with existing school
management systems for seamless operation.
Offline Functionality (Optional)
Lightweight deployment or offline mode for use in schools with limited internet
connectivity.
Alerts and Notifications
Automated alerts to teachers and administrators for timely intervention actions.

Technical Implementation:

Data Collection and Preprocessing

The first stage involves collecting data from various sources, including student
attendance records, academic performance reports (marks and grades), behavioural

data such as participation and discipline records, and socio-economic information like
family income or parental education where available.
Model Development
For dropout prediction, supervised classification models such as Random Forest,
XGBoost, or Neural Networks will be explored. The dataset will be split into training and
testing sets to evaluate each model’s performance accurately.
Backend Implementation
The backend of the platform will be developed using Python, with frameworks such as
Flask or FastAPI to build RESTful APIs. These APIs will handle requests for making
predictions, storing data, and retrieving intervention recommendations. The student
data, model predictions, and intervention records will be stored securely in a database
system such as MongoDB or MySQL, depending on deployment needs.
Frontend Implementation
The frontend user interface will be developed using ReactJS to create a responsive,
interactive dashboard. This dashboard will provide secure login for teachers,
administrators, and NGO staff to access the system.

Why IBM Resources and Tools?

IBM Cloud and Watson Studio

IBM Cloud and Watson Studio provide a robust and scalable infrastructure for
data processing, model training, and deployment. Watson Studio offers state-of-
the-art tools for data science workflows, enabling efficient data cleaning, feature
engineering, model building, and evaluation. This enhances the overall
development process, ensuring high performance, accuracy, and reliability of AI
models.
Advanced Analytics Capabilities
IBM Cloud offers powerful advanced analytics capabilities that facilitate the
processing and analysis of large, complex educational datasets efficiently. This
allows for deeper insights, better feature extraction, and the creation of more
accurate predictive models for student dropout risks.
Security and Compliance
IBM Cloud ensures high standards of data security and privacy, addressing ethical
concerns related to sensitive student data handling. Its compliance with global
and local data protection regulations helps mitigate risks associated with data
misuse or bias, making it a trusted choice for education-focused AI solutions.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the AI-Powered Early Dropout Prediction and Intervention System
presents an innovative and impactful solution to one of the most critical challenges in
education today. By leveraging advanced machine learning models, explainable AI

techniques, and robust deployment frameworks, this system enables schools, NGOs,
and education departments to identify at-risk students proactively and implement
timely, personalized interventions. This not only reduces dropout rates but also ensures
that underprivileged children continue their education and improve their life
opportunities. The integration of IBM Cloud and Watson Studio further enhances the
system’s scalability, security, and performance, ensuring reliable and ethical AI
deployment. Overall, this project contributes significantly towards achieving Quality
Education (SDG 4) and paves the way for data-driven, equitable, and sustainable
educational development.
