Modalities of Minor Degree Program and Annex I Final

The National Institute of Technology Silchar has established modalities for a Minor Degree Program, divided into two categories: Category I, offered by B.Tech. departments to students from other departments, and Category II, offered by any department to all UG students. Each Minor Degree requires completion of 18-22 credits, with specific course requirements and evaluation methods based on the category. Students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 8.5 to enroll, and the program must be completed within three years, with no additional fees for the 2025 admission cohort.

Modalities framed regarding the Minor Degree Program

1. Minor degree programmes will be offered under two categories – Category I and
Category II.
The Minor Degree under Category I shall be offered by the B.Tech. Degree awarding
Departments to the UG students of other departments and shall be named as “Minor
Degree in CE / ME / EE / ECE / EI / CSE” (e.g., the Minor Degree offered by CSE
Department shall be named as “Minor Degree in CSE”).
The Minor Degree under Category II shall be offered by any department to the UG
students of all departments and shall be named as “Minor Degree in ___________” (e.g.,
the Minor Degree offered by MBA department in “Management Fundamentals” shall be
named as “Minor Degree in Management Fundamentals”).
2. All the courses (18-22 credits) of Minor Degree under Category I shall be from the
existing courses of the corresponding B.Tech. programme of the degree offering
department. For example, all the courses of Minor Degree in CE shall be from the
existing B.Tech. courses of CE, which may be either fixed or chosen from pool of
selected courses specialization-wise through departmental Minor Degree Program
Coordinator.
3. All the courses (18-22 credits) of Minor Degree under Category II shall be designed as
per the requirement for the programme and shall not be from the existing UG courses.
However, courses from PG level may be inducted in these programmes, if they are
desired and well-mapped. That is the all the courses shall have different code and name
with different course-content from any of the courses existing in the UG programmes.
4. The students opting for the Minor Degree under Category I from a particular department
(say, Minor Degree in CSE) need to attend the classes with the students of that
department (students of CSE department). Their evaluation shall be with the all the
students registered for that course (i.e., students opting for Minor Degree in CSE from
other departments and students from CSE department) in that semester.
The students opting for the Minor Degree under Category II from a department (say,
Minor Degree in Management Fundamentals) need to attend the classes as per the time
table and their evaluation shall be with the students registered for that course only (i.e.,
students opting for Minor Degree in Management Fundamentals) in that semester.
5. With the existing practice of branch changing, the maximum capacity for a course in a
particular department (say, CSE) from 3rd semester level onwards is about 180 (about
163 + about 17 through branch change). Considering practical limitations of
accommodating students in a theory and laboratory classroom, the maximum number of
students per Minor Degree programmes under Category I is proposed to be 15 numbers.
However, if the Institute takes a decision to remove the option of branch-change (i.e.,
10% over-and-above the maximum student-strength of a particular branch), then it can
be applicable w.e.f. Academic Year 2026-27 at the earliest. If so, the maximum number
of students per Minor Degree programmes under Category I can be increased to 25
numbers.
The maximum number of students per Minor Degree programmes under Category II is
proposed to be 25 numbers. However, the minimum number of students needed to run
this category of Minor Degree programme is proposed to be 5.
6. Minor degree should be completed within maximum 3 (three) years starting from 3 rd
semester. All the theory/laboratory courses should be completed within 7 th semester.
However, the mini project (if any) can be possible in 8 th semester.
7. A student can opt for only one Minor Degree during his/her UG programme tenure.
8. The interested students shall be allowed to opt for a Minor Degree programme purely
based on merit with minimum 8.5 CGPA without any backlog in 1 st and 2nd semester.
9. There shall not be any provision for backlog, compartmental, summer-term and
supplementary examinations. If a student got “F” grade in any one or more courses in
any semester under the chosen Minor Degree programme course-structure, then the
he/she shall not be eligible for the Minor degree. However, appropriate course
completion certificate shall be issued for the course(s) he/she has passed with the
obtained grade(s)
10. The CGPA of the Minor degree pragrammes shall be evaluated following the same
procedure as that followed for the existing UG programmes. However, the CGPA of the
Minor Degree of a particular student (say Minor Degree in CSE) shall not have any
impact on the CGPA of his/her parent UG degree (say, B.Tech. in CE).
11. The application process of students for the minors programme for 2024 entry batch shall
commence in the 1st week of July 2025. The selected student can do course registration
with the regular course registration of 3rd semester as per the academic calendar.
12. No extra fees will be asked from the student who took admission in Minor Degree
Program commences from 2025. However, the fees etc. may be revisited as per the
institute policy in next academic year 2026-27.
13. All departments will assign one Minor Degree Program Coordinator.
14. Prof. Bijan Nath, Associate Dean (Academic) section will act as Nodal officer for the
Minor Degree Program.
15. In annexure I, the details of the Minor Degree Program along with eligible branches of
Engineering are mentioned.
