Four Probe Viva

The document outlines a series of model questions and answers related to the Four Probe Method experiment, focusing on concepts such as band gap measurement, the purpose of four probes, and the relationship between voltage and temperature. It explains the significance of impurity charge carriers, the extrinsic and intrinsic regions of conductivity, and the need for correction factors in measuring resistivity. The content is aimed at providing foundational knowledge for understanding semiconductor behavior in the context of the experiment.

Four Probe Method Viva

*Model Questions*

Q1) Why don't we measure band gap for a

conductor?

It is because band gap theory is not applicable to

conductors

Q2) Why are four probes being used in the

experiment?

For a more precise reading

Q3) Why aren't we able to conventionally take out

the resistivity here of the crystal?

This is because the width of the semiconductor

crystal we're using here

Q4) What is the use of the four probes?

Two of them are there for current and the other
two for Voltage

Q5) Give the layman foundation of this

experiment?

It is the relation between voltage and the

temperature

Q6) Why is it that at first the graph is linear like?

It is because there is not enough energy to excite
the electron
Q7) What is causing the conductivity before the
excitation of electrons?
The impurity charge carriers
Q8) What is the starting region of graph known
as?
Extrinsic region
Q9) What are impurity charge carriers?
The donor or acceptor impurities (doping) p or n
type
Q10) What is the intrinsic region?
The region where the graph stagnates and
decreases
Q11) What is indicative of the intrinsic region?
It means that the conductivity is due to the
electron excitation, a completely instrinsic factor
Q12) Why is there a need to use G7 (Correction
Factor)?
It is because we can't get the resistivity of the
semiconductor by conventional methods due to it
having a significant width
