This technical bulletin addresses the misdiagnosis of L-series governor failures, specifically part number 936-081, which have been returned with no faults found. It provides a troubleshooting guide to help dealers determine if issues like engine hunting or low power are related to the governor or another system. The document outlines a step-by-step procedure for testing and resolving these issues to prevent unnecessary governor replacements.

Technical Information
Bulletin
TIB 0148
26th June 2013

SUBJECT: Preventing Misdiagnosis of L-series Governor Failures.

PROBLEM

Several L-series governors (Part number 936-081) have been returned from the field and tested with
no fault found. When parts were checked the files where slightly different than what was flashed
into the governor. The governor was re-flashed with the original file and tested on a generator set
with no issues.

This technical information bulletin is a troubleshooting guide to prevent Dealers replacing the
governor when there is no fault with the governor.

AFFECTED PART NUMBERS

936-081

PROCEDURE

The Dealer service engineer is misdiagnosing L-series governor failures in relation to engine hunting /
engine over speed / under speed, low power from engine etc. To prevent this misdiagnosis please
follow the simple flow diagram which explains how to determine whether the issue is related to L-
series governor or something else which requires further analysis.

(1) Connect your L-series governor to the laptop.

(2) Open L-series software.

(3) Check readings on L-series are not blank.

(4) Go to EPSS and download latest file for the specific generator set you are investigating.

(5) Flash file into L series. Using the password: Lseries01 (ensure uppercase and lowercase are
applied to password).

(6) Run generator set to see if this solves problem.

(7) If problem is not corrected remove the governor / disconnect harness.

(7) Disconnect (8) Adjust the

harness throttle screw

(8) Adjust the throttle screw to the rated speed.

(9) Run generator set to see if this solves problem.

(9a) If this solves the problem then the most likely cause of failure is a faulty L-series governor. Try a
different L-series controller on the generator set ensuring that the correct file is flashed.

(9b) If it does not solve the problem then the fault does not lie with the L-series governor but with the
fuel system. Refer to Engine SOTA “System operation test and adjust”.

For further help please contact [email protected] or E-Quest. Please supply a copy of the L-series
configuration file from the generator set.
