Textbook
Pages: Page 170 to 189 Alef Lessons: 136- 140
Key Analog An analog signal is any continuous signal
Vocabulary: represented by a sine wave
Digital Digital signal is a series of discrete values of 1’s and
0’s known as binary numbering system
Binary Binary numbering system is used to code
everything from memory to images on the screen
Domino computer A computer that uses a digital circuit that uses
gates to perform operations
Vinyl records These records are analog because they store
audio information in the form of continuously
varying signals
Lesson • Analog signal is a continuous signal that can be represented as a sine
Summary: wave. Analog signal varies in time and amplitude. But can have an
infinite range of values.
• Analog systems are used in film photography. A wall clock uses an
analog system.
• The analog signal is created when a microphone converts sound waves
into an electrical signal analog signal.
• Cassette’s recordings use analog signal which has limited frequency
range of 20 Hz to 20Hz. Cassettes are also prone to the tape hiss and
noise due to the nature of the recording.
• Digital signals are cleaner and more precise and has a much higher
frequency range.
• A digital signal represents information as a series of discrete values or
numbers, typically binary code. (0’s and 1’s)
• Digital signals are used in the internet, digital audio and computer. They
are less susceptible to noise. Disadvantages is that digital require more
bandwidth.

• A Dominoes computer also known as a logic circuit uses a series of logic

gates arranged in a dominoes chain, in this circuit the output of one
domino gate is connected to the input of the next gate in the chain
forming a cascade of gates which propagates through the circuit.
