1 Object and field of application
This part of IEC 60079 specifies the general requirements for the construction, testing, and marking of
electrical material and components Ex intended for use in explosive atmospheres.
EXTRACT FROM DOCUMENT UNE-EN 60079-0
The normal atmospheric conditions (related to the explosive characteristics of the atmosphere) under which
You can assume that the electrical material can be operated with:
• temperature from -20 ºC to +60 ºC;
• pressure of 80 kPa (0.8 bar) to 110 kPa (1.1 bar); and
• air with normal oxygen content, generally 21% v/v.
This standard and other standards that supplement this standard specify additional testing requirements for material.
operated outside the normal temperature range, but may require further consideration and additional testing to
material operated outside of normal atmospheric pressure and normal oxygen content, particularly with
regarding protection methods that depend on the extinction of a flame such as 'drum explosion-proof 'd''
(IEC 60079-1) or energy limitation, 'intrinsic safety
NOTE 1 Although the previous normal atmospheric conditions provide a temperature range of the atmosphere from -20 ºC to +60 ºC, the range of
Normal ambient temperatures of the material are from -20 ºC to +40 ºC, unless otherwise specified and marked. See the section
-20 °C to +40 °C is considered suitable for most materials and that to manufacture all the material to adapt to
a normal atmosphere at an ambient temperature of +60 ºC would impose unnecessary design limitations.
NOTE 2 The requirements provided in this standard are the result of an ignition risk assessment conducted on the electrical material.
The ignition sources that have been considered are those associated with this type of material, such as hot surfaces,
mechanically generated sparks, mechanical impacts that result in aluminum and metal oxide reactions (thermite), electric arcs and
static electric discharges in normal industrial environments.
NOTE 3 It is acknowledged that, with technological evolution, it may be possible to achieve the objectives of the IEC 60079 series of standards regarding
prevention of explosion by methods that are not yet fully defined. When a manufacturer wants to benefit from these advances
this international standard can be partially applied, as well as other standards from the IEC 60079 series. It is intended that the manufacturer prepares the
documentation that clearly defines how the series of IEC 60079 Standards has been applied, along with a complete explanation of the
additional techniques used. The designation 'Ex s' has been reserved to indicate special protection. It is under development.
IEC 60076-33 standard for special protection 's'.
NOTE 4 When an explosive gas atmosphere and an inflammable dust atmosphere are, or may be, present at the same time, it should
the simultaneous presence of both should be taken into account and additional protective measures may be required.
This standard does not specify other safety requirements other than those directly related to the risk of
explosion. Ignition sources such as adiabatic compression, shock waves, chemical reactions
Exothermic reactions, self-ignition of dust, or open flames and hot gases/liquids are not covered by this standard.
NOTE 5 Said material should be subjected to a risk analysis that identifies and relates all possible sources of ignition due to the
electrical material as well as the measures to be applied to prevent them from being effective.
The following rules regarding specific protection modes complement or modify this standard:
– IEC 60079-1: Gases. Flameproof enclosures 'd';

of publication).
