TEACHING PLAN
2. SUMMARY
The discipline Principles of Surgical Technique, a professionalizing discipline part of the curriculum of the Course
from the Dentistry School of the University of Brasília, (ODT–UnB) and component of the Area of MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
FACIAL (CBMF) of the referred Course. Its basic objectives are to teach the duly enrolled students
with completed prerequisites, the technical-scientific foundations for the initiation of dental surgical practice.
The discipline focuses on the basic knowledge for surgical practice, the techniques and the instruments necessary for
the performance of simple extractions, as well as their indications and contraindications; in addition to
management of accidents and complications during surgeries, so that students prepare to start the
care for patients who require surgical intervention at Dental Clinic 7. Instructions will also be given.
practice of biosafety and instruments (functions, handling, assembly of the surgical table, and dressing)
team) and training in isolated surgical parts (swine jaw and bovine tongue) for the execution of the
basic procedures in surgery (incisions, tooth extractions, ostectomies, odonsectomy, and sutures).
3. GENERAL OBJECTIVE
To initiate the student in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, exposing them to the surgical environment and to the work in
team, within the basic concepts of this dental specialty.
Provide the theoretical/practical foundations to enable students to perform tooth extractions and surgeries.

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
Know how to behave within the surgical clinic, according to the rules that govern the environment.
hospital
b. To know the preparation and attire to be part of a surgical team;
c. Adequately handle the basic instruments and those used in oral and maxillofacial surgery;
d. Properly assist the surgeon and provide the instruments/materials used;
e. To know the instruments and techniques for performing diathesis, excision, hemostasis, and synthesis.
f. To know intraoral incisions and sutures;
g. Know the techniques for tooth extractions: Technique I; Technique II; Technique III.
h. To know the accidents and complications in minor oral surgery, as well as forms of treatment.
6. TEACHING METHODOLOGY
1. Synchronous and/or asynchronous activities either in person or using the Moodle CEAD Virtual Platform
Distance Learning at UnB and Microsoft Teams Platform: In-person theoretical expository classes, teaching material
virtual, Guided Study Plans, Exercises and Seminars/Banner/Clinical case discussion.
2. Scientific articles, e-books, and book chapters on the topics covered in the semester and supplements.
3. In-person practical classes: A- the practice of complete surgical gowning and setting up the surgical table simulating
a dental surgical procedure. B- practice on isolated surgical pieces for the execution of various
surgical procedures that will be performed during surgeries on patients of the Dental Clinics.
7. EVALUATION
The discipline comprises a theoretical part and a laboratory practical part, requiring the student to
At the end of the semester, carry out all the procedures you learned during the class period, when you should
demonstrate the ability to behave within a surgical environment and perform basic procedures
what constitutes the operative act in Oral Surgery. The student will undergo evaluations in person,
with defined deadlines, as described below:
a) Two written theoretical assessments (ATE1 and ATE2) on defined dates and known to you
means of objective multiple-choice and/or discursive tests - (scored individual activity);
d) An oral theoretical assessment (ATO) through a face-to-face discussion of a clinical case - (activity
punctuated in group);
Thus, the mention of the discipline will be the result of the averages of the theoretical written assessment grades.
(ATE1 and ATE2) with weight 2, seminar (S) with weight 1, clinical practice/laboratory (NP) with weight 1 and
oral theoretical assessment (ATO) with a weight of 3, represented by the following formula below:

Observations:
The department reserves the right to modify the schedule presented in this Teaching Plan, provided that prior notice is given, without prejudice to
content and proposed activities. It is the students' responsibility to divide tasks for carrying out the activities in the group defined by the teacher;
2. The student(s) who miss the proposed assessment activities by the deadlines defined in this schedule, (ITEM 7. EVALUATION) may, after due
justification to the responsible teacher (which must be submitted within 3 calendar days after the activity date), to carry out a substitutive evaluation in the form
of ORAL EXAM, with the same theoretical content, on a date and time to be scheduled. For the purposes of filing/documentation, this exam will be recorded
in the digital environment. Attendance lists for synchronous and asynchronous activities will not be subject to scoring;
3. It is necessary for the student to have previously completed the theoretical course of Dental Clinic 4–Anesthesiology.
Delays of up to 15 (fifteen) minutes after the start of in-person classes will be tolerated.
5. All requested materials for the practice must be complete by the day of the first practical class. The student who does not have complete materials will not participate.
from the practical class and will receive an absence. The student will be responsible for the equipment and must observe the minimum standards of cleanliness when finishing their practical activities.
(e.g. gaze at the floor, spotlight on, chair out of position, and all the trash collected).
6. Students who are not wearing full surgical attire (scrub/surgical pajamas, cap, etc.) will not be admitted to practice in the Dental Clinic.
N95 mask/respirator, safety goggles, face shield, and closed shoes). The student will be invited to leave the clinic and will receive an absence.

those who do not have the evaluation sheet. The responsibility for the individual evaluation sheet lies with the student and its loss may result in a grade of zero. The sheet will be
collected just after the last practical class.
In laboratory practices, each student must bring newspapers, plastic bags, and a metal tray to cover the bench throughout the practical lesson.
