Thesis : The Student's Dilemma: Between Hanging Out, Assignments, and
Time Management”
Students often face a dilemma between completing academic tasks and
socializing, socializing in any form if not managed properly can have a negative
impact on academic performance as well as mental health. Lack of effective
time management causes many students to get stuck in the habit of
procrastinating, which results in stress and reduced academic quality.
Pro :
Procrastination Increases Stress and Anxiety Levels
Students who procrastinate often suffer from higher levels of stress. For
example, in a news report on university research Yoga Saputra from Brawijaya
University 2022 mentioned that of students who frequently put off work for
long periods of time suffer from significant levels of academic stress. Tasks
piling up ahead of deadlines often cause anxiety as students are forced to work
intensively or multiply their thoughts and energy to study and do assignments
in a short period of time. Dr. Joseph Ferrari points out that procrastination
increases the factual burden not only because you are forced to complete the
task in a short time but also because of the significant psychological pressure.
Declining academic performance due to poor time management
Habitual procrastination and lack of time planning contribute significantly to
poor grades. The decline in academic performance is influenced by short study
time as well as late action on course assignments. A study by Wahyu Enggal
Iswanto from Brawijaya University in 2020 proved that students who tend to
procrastinate have an average GPA below 3.0, while those where time runs
smoothly have a GPA of 3.5. Leaving assignments until late means having
limited time which will affect the level of understanding.
Mental disorders due to procrastination
Putting off tasks and preferring to relax or hang out can have a negative impact
on mental health. When tasks pile up, a person can experience high
psychological pressure, especially if the deadline for submitting tasks is
approaching. This pressure can lead to stress, anxiety, loss of focus and even
depression in the long run if done continuously.

Kontra:
Socializing can improve mental health and time management strategies.
On the other hand socializing, for example hanging out with friends, provides
emotional support. Research by Siti Nurbaya from Malang State Polytechnic
shows that students who are active in social activities have 30% lower stress
levels compared to those who are not. Social interaction will also help in
introductions and skill development. John Cacioppo, a social psychologist, says
that human relationships are the great strength of this being.
Some students are able to balance social and academic activities. Not
everyone's grades drop when they socialize a lot. Research conducted by
Diponegoro University claims that 40% of students who actively socialize have
a GPA of more than 3.7. These students use several time management
methods such as making schedules, setting priorities, including boring ones,
avoiding procrastination. Dr. Linda Stone, an educational psychologist, agrees
with this argument and believes that a balance between academics and social
life is the key to building dreams.
