Materials:

2, (3, 3, 4, 4)—50g balls, color 1013 Sea Blue
Gauge: 14 sts, 24 rows= 4” in st st and garter stitch
on US size 9 (5.5mm) needles.
Needles: US Size 9 (5.5mm) straight knitting
needles, 4 removable markers, 3 buttons, 5.5 mm
crochet hook.
Pattern is written for smallest size, with larger sizes in
parenthesis. If only one number is given, it applies to all
sizes.
Back
CO 35, (37, 39, 41, 42) sts. Work 3 rows in garter
stitch (k every row). Beg working in st st (k 1 row, p
1 row), starting with a p row. ** When back
measures 5 ½”, (5 ¾, 6 ¼, 6½, 7) from CO edge,
place a removable m on each side of this last row to
mark sleeve placement. Continue to work in st st
until back measures 9 ½”, (10, 10 ½, 11, 11 ½) from
CO edge. BO 11, (11, 13, 13, 14) sts at the beg of
next 2 rows. BO remaining 13, (15, 13, 15, 14) sts.
Right Front Next Row (WS): P to last 4 sts, p2togtbl, k2- 1 st
Work same as back until **. Keep the first 3 sts of dec’d.
RS Rows in garter stitch now and throughout, Rep these 2 rows 11, (12, 12, 13, 13) times more.
If you are making this for a girl: Work 1 ½” from 11, (11, 13, 13, 14) sts remain.

Sleeves
Sew the shoulder seams of the fronts and back
together. Then, with RS facing, pick up and k 30,
(32, 32, 34, 34) sts in between the side m. Work in st
st for 6 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next and
following 3rd, (3rd, 4th, 4th, 5th) row 4, (5, 4, 5, 4)
times. 22, (22, 24, 24, 26) sts remain.
Work even until sleeve measures 4”, (4 ½, 4 ½, 5,
5½) from pick up edge, end having worked a RS
Row. K 3 rows in garter stitch. BO all sts on next
row. Rep for the other sleeve.
Finishing
Block to measurements. Sew the sleeve and side
seams. With crochet hook, make a chain button loop
at the inner corner of the surplice. Sew 1 button at
the WS side seam for the inside button loop. Sew 2
buttons onto either the left or right front- depending
upon if this is for a girl or boy, lining them up with
the buttonholes. With crochet hook, work one row of
single crochet across the back neck sts. Weave in all
ends.
