INTRODUCTION
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a main source of
fuel especially in urban areas because it is clean as
compared to firewood and charcoal. Liquefied
Petroleum Gas (LPG). Gas leakage is a major
problem in the industrial sector, residential
premises, etc. Nowadays, home security has
become a major issue because of increasing gas
leakage. One of the preventive methods to stop
accidents associated with the gas leakage is to
install a gas leakage detection kit in gas lighter
with gas leak alarm at vulnerable places. The
system is based on a sensor that easily detects a
gas leakage.
GAS leakage is a serious problem and nowadays is
observed in many places like industries,
households etc. It is noticed due to gas leakage
many accidents occur. In homes LPG is used
mainly for cooking purposes.
When a leak occurs, the leaked gases may lead to
explosion. Gas leakage leads to various accidents
resulting in both human and material loss. Home
fires have been occurring frequently and the
threat to human lives and properties have been
growing in recent years. The number of deaths
due to explosion of gas cylinders has been
increasing in recent years.
The reason for such explosion is due to
substandard cylinders, old valves, no regular
checking of gas cylinder, worn out regulators and
lack of awareness of handling cylinders.
Therefore, a gas leakage should be detected and
controlled to protect people from danger.
A well- functioning gas lighter with leakage
detection system and alarm is an invaluable
part of maintaining safety in kitchen where
the gas is used.
OBJECTIVES
The primary objective is to provide a novel
means for safely detecting any malfunction of
gas in order to protect explosion or accidents.
Detect LPG leakage using MQ5 sensor and
Arduino
Sound alarm -produce sound alert on gas
leakage
To design and implement the
development of lighter that detects gas
leakage with alarm.
COMPONENTS
Following are the components used in a gas
lighter:
Arduino pro mini
LPG Gas sensor MQ5
Buzzer
Bread board
9-volt battery
connecting wires
Gas Lighter
LPG GAS SENSOR MODULE
This module contains a MQ5 sensor which
actually detects LPG gas, a comparator (LM393)
for comparing MQ5 output voltage with
reference voltage.
It gives a HIGH output when LPG gas is sensed. A
potentiometer is also used for controlling
sensitivity of gas sensing.
This module is very easy to interface with
microcontrollers and Arduino and easily available
in market by name “LPG Gas Sensor Module”. We
can also build it by using LM358 or LM393 and
MQ5”
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM AND DESCRIPTION
AS shown in the above circuit diagram, it contains
Arduino board. LPG gas sensor module buzzer.
Arduino buzzer controls the whole process with
this system.
LPG gas sensor module contains MQ5 sensor
which detects LPG gas. This MQ5 sensor contains
heater inside which needs heat to detect gas
leakage in particular area.
A buzzer is connected with Arduino which gives
alert with red light when there is a leakage of LPG
gas.

ARDUINO PRO MINI
The Arduino Pro Mini is a microcontroller board
based on the ATmega328. It has 14 digital
input/output pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM
outputs), 6 analog inputs, an on-board resonator,
a reset button, and holes for mounting pin
headers.
A six-pin header can be connected to an FTDI cable
or Sparkfun breakout board to provide USB power
and communication to the board. The Arduino Pro
Mini is intended for semi-permanent installation in
objects or exhibitions. The board comes without
pre-mounted headers, allowing the use of various
types of connectors or direct soldering of wires.
The pin layout is compatible with the Arduino Mini.
There are two version of the Pro Mini. One runs at
3.3V and 8 MHz, the other at 5V and 16 MHz The
Arduino Pro Mini was designed and is
manufactured by SparkFun Electronics.
IMPORTANCE OF DETECTION
OF GAS LEAKAGE
Most commonly used gases, such as natural gas or
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG, a mix of propane
and butane) are invisible to the naked eye and
highly explosive under the “right” circumstances.
To aid in detection, a strong-smelling odorant is
added to the-otherwise odorless- gas. This allows
the human nose to act as a gas detector.
There are several reasons why the human nose is
not enough, however:
A properly installed and maintained gas
detection system can detect gas faster and
more reliably than the human nose. The
sooner you can act, the easier it is limit to the
amount of leakage.
Someone might not always be present when a
leak happens. It can happen overnight.
Gas can be heavier or lighter than the air in the
room. This means that it will concentrate near
the floor or the ceiling, here it may be out of
reach of your nose.
LIMITATIONS
Here are the limits for few of the more common
LPG GAS:
PROPANE: 2% to 9.5%
BUTANE: 1.5% to 8.5%
METHANE (NATURAL GAS): 5% to 15%
HYDROGEN: 17% to 56%
Even outside of this range, hydrogen is still
flammable in concentraƟons between 4% to
& 75%.
Gas detectors normally close the safety shut-
off valve when the gas reaches 20% of the
lower Explosion limit.
SCOPE
Home fires have been taking place frequently and
the threat to human lives and properties is growing
in recent years. Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) is highly
inflammable and can burn even at some distance
from the source of leakage. Most fire accidents are
caused because of a poor-quality rubber tube or the
regulator is not turned off when not in use.
Therefore, developing the gas leakage alert system
in GAS LIGHTER is very essential.
The user is alerted about the gas leakage through
alarming buzzer with red light in a gas lighter.
The goal of the project is to develop a smart
automatic gas leakage detection system. The
system is designed for homes, in this system, there
will be an alert. It is designed to detect sudden gas
leakage. It will contain necessary sensors for
detecting gas leakage.
In this paper a low-cost advanced sensor-based gas
leakage detector, alert and control system is.
proposed and discussed. The system is very
efficient, user friendly, portable and small in size.
METHODOLOGY
In this study it can be described how the tool can
work to capture the gas received by the sensor,
then the sensor is processed in an Arduino
program that can display data in the LCD, emit
sound and send a short message to the registered
mobile number. The scheme can be seen in the
block diagram.
From the picture above it can be seen that this tool
has an input device (input device) consisting of a
gas sensor and an output device (output device),
GSM Module, and buzzer. The way this tool works
is when it is turned on, the sensor will work to
transfer LPG gas and send data according to the
LPG gas level it detects.
The higher the LPG gas is detected, the higher the
voltage released. When the sensor output is
moved the presence of gas, then Arduino will
activate, and activate the buzzer, which means
there has been a gas leak.
However, if the sensor does not detect a leak, the
sensor will not remove the output, and the sensor
will continue to work until it is proven that there is
an LPG gas leak. The system design in this study is
described in the form of a flowchart to facilitate
the reading and understanding of the system that
will be made in this study.
CONCLUSION
The design of a GAS LIGHTER WITH GAS LEAKAGE
ALARM which includes a buzzer and gas detector
sensor (MQ5) has been proposed or discussed. This
is a low cost, low power, low weight, user friendly,
efficient, multi featured and simple system device
that detects gas leakage. This lighter will not
provide any significance in the health department
but it will also lead to raise our economy, because
when gas leaks it not only contaminates the
atmosphere but also wastage of gas affects our
economy. The proposed system is affordable for
every community. In future, more advanced
features will be integrated with this system which
will provide users with more safety and relaxation.
The device leads to development in the field of gas
sensors, which has considerably widened their
scope of application.
