SOCIOLOGY / MEDICAL
A Diagnosis for Our Times
Despite having one of the most advanced systems of medicine in the world,
American consumers are increasingly turning to alternative medicine. Through a study
of two alternative health networks, one “New Age” and the other conservative
Christian, A Diagnosis for Our Times examines the health regimes followed by clients
100
of alternative practitioners, the way people find meaning in non-Western and pre-
where people discover new values and new ways of living that may have larger impli-
75
cations. The authors discover surprising commonalities between the cultural left and
50
the religious right when it comes to healthcare, and they evaluate the potential of
25
“Treating alternative health as a new social movement is a very good strategy. The
theory employed here is both helpful and innovative, and the ideas of Habermas,
Benjamin, and Foucault are all used very effectively to explain what alternative medi-

cine is, how it works, and why it is seen as helpful to so many people.”
— Joseph E. Davis, editor of Stories of Change: Narrative and Social Movements
is the author of The Dream of a New Social Order: Popular Magazines in America,
1893–1914. Jonathan David Geczik (1942–2001) was Professor of Political Science
at the Community College of Allegheny County.

Cancer Therapy (CFC). The CFC, which recently held its twenty-year
anniversary, holds monthly meetings that introduce to an audience of
middle-aged and elderly people a range of alternative treatments for
cancer and other diseases. Literature is displayed, videos are shown,
organic food is sold, and guest speakers representing a wide range of
alternative health care modalities are brought in to speak each month.
Ed has lived in a small town bordering Pittsburgh all his life, where he
was a steelworker and member of the USW. He has since retired and
now spends most of his time advocating the cause of alternative
health, and inventing and promoting his own water purification
system.
Ed has been married most of his life to the same woman, Sandra.
He says he married Sandra because he “got her pregnant” and it was
the right thing to do. Unlike couples who “fall in love” and then “ten
weeks later they’re trying to make out with someone else,” Ed has
grown closer to Sandra over the years and they work together (she
works in a health food store) and share the same religious values and
commitment to alternative health. Ed’s daughter is estranged from him
because she had a child out of wedlock. Despite the urging of his
friends to reconcile with her, Ed cannot because he believes that his
daughter needs to acknowledge her sin before he can forgive her.
Many years ago Ed was introduced to alternative medicine through
his good friends Tom and Ellen. Ellen had been diagnosed with breast
cancer and her health was rapidly deteriorating. As devout Christians
both couples believed in the power of prayer. As Ed put it, “We were
praying. Lord your will be done.” Ed thought that only prayer could
heal Ellen after she had tried chemotherapy, radiation, and a number
of operations without success. If she did not recover, it “was God’s
will.” But one day Ed and Sandra bumped into Tom and Ellen at the
local Eat and Park restaurant and discovered that Tom had become an
advocate of alternative cancer treatments and had convinced Ellen to
try these unconventional treatments. It was Ed’s friend Tom who envi-
sioned a new organization that would provide support for cancer
patients seeking alternatives to conventional treatments for cancer.
Shortly after, Ed became instrumental in the formation of the CFC
and, as he put it, “the word spread through a local radio interview and
through word of mouth.” Originally the group was loosely affiliated
with support groups for a California doctor who was in danger of
losing his license for using unauthorized and “dangerous” alternative
treatments for cancer (laetrile). While this case has long been resolved,
the CFC remains in existence and now focuses on its original mission

Disorders,” “Pollution Most Likely Culprit for Latest List of Ills,” “Dealing
With Candidiasis and Allergies,” among many other topics. The speakers
are typically advocates of nutritional approaches for maintaining health
or for addressing particular health problems. The NLG was part of the
Health Foods Movement, which emerged in the 1930s as an alternative
approach to the discoveries of nutritional science. In the view of the
NLG, food has been “devitalized” or depleted of its minerals and
essential nutrients by modern agricultural planting practices and by the
application of chemicals—fertilizers, pesticides, and preservatives. The
leaders of both the CFC and NLG know one another well and go to
each other’s meetings but are far less likely to shop at the Pittsburgh co-
op or interact with HLQ members. It was more difficult for us to get to
know members of these groups, but we did attend the monthly
meetings, interview the leadership of both the CFC and NLG and
administer a survey at one well-attended CFC meeting.
From our contacts with both groups we learned about a national
organization, the National Health Federation (NHF), that functions both
as an interest group, a source for information and health referrals, and
a sponsor of conferences and health fairs that provide a forum for
practitioners, patients, and activists. We attended a number of regional
health fairs, conventions, and meetings sponsored by the NHF and
talked to the president of the local chapter. At the first conference we
attended, there was much discussion about the head of the federation,
Dr. Jonathan Wright, and his harassment by the Federal Food and Drug
Administration (FDA). His clinic was raided, files were taken, and his
practice was closed down for several months. Discussions around this
incident led to the venting of considerable anger at the government
and fear about the future of alternative health. Concerns were also
expressed about government attempts to regulate vitamins in a fashion
analogous to the way prescription drugs are regulated.
A local television station features guests from the Christian alter-
native health community and emphasizes the compatibility of
Christianity and alternative health. Maureen Solomon is a popular and
frequent guest who also has a regular show where she offers health
advice and interviews alternative health practitioners. Solomon is a
nationally known figure whose books are widely distributed in health
food stores along with her health products. A chiropractor, Martin
Gallagher, along with his wife, also has a show, which parallels the
form and content of Solomon’s show. There is also a radio station that
regularly broadcasts a number of programs on alternative health and is
loosely associated with some of the founders of the CFC.
