Fishing
Fishing Tools

• Outside catch

• Inside catch

• Washover and basket tools

• Fishing for Wireline

• Milling, drilling and smashing

junk
Bowen series 70 overshot
Main characteristics;
„ Grip increases as pull increases
„ Grip increases with LH torque
„ Grip releases with RH torque
„ Very strong in tension, can jar on
„ Allows circulation and wireline tools to go
inside the fish
„ Can be released downhole without
damaging the fish
„ Can mill over light damage
„ The Tool Of First Choice!
Die Collar
• Main characteristics;
• Weak in tension, cannot jar on
• Allows circulation and Wireline tools to go inside the fish
• Cannot be released downhole so requires a Safety Joint and
is rarely used.
Releasing Spear

• An overshot in reverse.

• Main characteristics;
• Grip increases as pull increases
• Grip releases with RH torque
• Not so strong in tension, can lightly jar
on
• Allows circulation through the fish
• Can be released downhole without
damaging the fish
Taper Tap
• A die collar in reverse.

• Main characteristics;

• Weak in tension, cannot jar on

• Allows circulation through the

fish

• Cannot be released downhole so

requires a Safety Joint

• Rarely used.
Jet Junk Retriever
• Main characteristics;
• A ball is dropped which diverts the fluid
flow around and up inside the tool.
• Spring loaded fingers allow the junk in
but not out.
• Ideal for drill bit cones.
• No indication of catching the fish until at
surface.
Junk Basket

• Main characteristics;
• Run above the drill bit
(pin up, box down).
• Can catch small pieces
of junk, like broken teeth.
• Sometimes run before a
PDC or diamond bit.
Poorboy Finger Basket
• Main characteristics;
• Can be made by a good rig
welder from a piece of liner!
• Set on bottom with low weight
and rotated slowly. Fingers twist
closed below the junk.
• Ideal for drill bit cones.
• No indication of catching the
fish until at surface.
Fishing Magnet

• Main characteristics;
• Can be a permanent magnet on
drillpipe or an electro magnet on
Wireline.
• Ideal for small bits of ferrous junk.
• No indication of catching the fish
until at surface.
Fishing for Wireline

3 different situations;

„ Wire has parted from the tool at the weak point

„ Wire has parted somewhere else

„ Wire is intact

If no wire in the hole, use an outside catch tool.

If wire is in the hole, it’s a horrible job to get it out!!

Wireline in the hole on top of the tool

The only choice is a Wireline Spear.

Main characteristics;
„ Run on drillpipe into the Wireline
“birds nest”.
„ Rotated a little and pick up.
„ Once the spear is at surface, the wire
is cut and retrieved.
