1960: Founded as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC)
2002: Conferred the status of Institute of National Importance as NITK
NITK gained the status of an Institute of National Importance through
the NIT Act of 2007.
NITK is located in Surathkal, Mangalore, with a sprawling 296-acre
campus.

Strategically located on the shores of the Arabian Sea, NITK

with the IEEE India Council and Women in Engineering Affinity Group.

Seven faculty members from NITK have earned a rare distinction by being named among the world’s top 2%
scientists in 2023 by Stanford University. The recognized faculty include Krishna D Bhat, Shashidhar G. Koolagudi,
Arun M. Isloor, Jeyaraj P., Subhaschandra Kattimani, Krishnan Prabhu, and Debashisha Jena.

Central Research Facility (CRF)
NITK’s Central Research Facility (CRF) is a premier
interdisciplinary hub supporting advanced research
across materials science, nanotechnology, structural
engineering, and environmental analysis. Equipped
with high-end instrumentation—including Scanning
Electron Microscopes (SEM), X-Ray Diffractometers
(XRD), Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM), and UV-Vis
spectrophotometers—the CRF enables in-depth
material characterization, nanoscale analysis, and
structural diagnostics. It plays a central role in
facilitating high-impact research projects,
interdisciplinary Ph.D. work, and collaborations with
national agencies such as ISRO, DRDO, and DST. In
parallel, NITK also hosts a Centre of Excellence in
Digital Manufacturing, developed in collaboration with
Siemens, to support training and hands-on learning in
industrial digitalization and automation.

Science & Technology Entrepreneurs’


Park (STEP)

STEP is NITK’s premier business incubation


centre, supported by DST and EDII, providing pre-
incubation, prototyping, and commercialization
support. It has successfully incubated 15+ startups
in sectors like IoT, CivilTech, FinTech, and Clean
Energy. Facilities include shared lab spaces, 3D
printing, business mentorship, legal support, and
access to seed funding. STEP is also a Nodal
Centre under the Startup India initiative and
Startup Karnataka program.

Centre for System Design (CSD)


The Centre for System Design promotes
interdisciplinary system-level problem-solving
through simulation, modeling, and
optimization. It supports projects in system
dynamics, mechatronics, control systems, and
digital twins. CSD collaborates with industries
for real-time applications and is involved in
Smart City and Industry 4.0 research
initiatives. It is also a nodal centre for several
AICTE-MHRD projects and prototypes funded
under Atal Innovation Mission. CSD Robocon
NITK is a leading robotics team, representing
NITK at ABU Robocon since 2018.They design
high-performance robots with industrial-grade
precision and speed.

Institution Innovation Council (IIC)

Recognized by the Ministry of Education’s


Innovation Cell, NITK's IIC has received a 4-star
rating for its commitment to fostering
