The Unlikely Invention Challenge

-Sugandh Katyal
Objective:
To develop students’ creative thinking, teamwork,
and problem-solving skills by challenging them to
generate innovative ideas from unrelated objects.
Instructions:
1.Form Groups: Divide students into small groups of 3–
5 members.
2.Select Objects: Each group will randomly pick two
unrelated everyday objects. (e.g., a spoon and a shoe,
or a toothbrush and a balloon).
3.Invent:
Combine the two objects to invent a completely new
product, service, or concept that solves an everyday
problem or adds unexpected value.
Brainstorm ideas as a team. Every member must
contribute ideas freely — no judgments during
brainstorming.
4.Name: Give the invention a creative name that
highlights its uniqueness.
5.Prototype: Create a simple sketch or a rough
prototype using basic materials (paper, tape,
markers, etc.).
6.Pitch: Prepare a short pitch (2–3 minutes) to present
the invention to the class. The pitch should explain:
What the invention is
How it works
Who would use it
Why it is innovative
Outcome of the Activity

1. Strengthen their creative and lateral thinking

skills by making unexpected connections between
unrelated ideas.
2. Improve collaboration and teamwork, learning to
build on each other’s ideas in an open-minded way.
3. Gain confidence in presenting and defending
unconventional ideas.
4. Understand the value of playful experimentation
as a path to innovation.
5. Leave with the mindset that thinking differently
often leads to breakthrough solutions.
