• Electric and mechanical interlock between 400V power supply switch from auxiliary generator [QF06.1]
and 400V power supply switch from transformer [QF07.12]. This kind of operation must be executed only
by trained personnel following the reported procedure.
• Stop and safety circuits of Mud Pumps belong to category SIL 2; PLC boards of type FAIL-SAFE have
been used.
• Protection against direct contacts by barriers and cases. If it was necessary to access to the active parts
removing barriers, opening cases or removing parts of cases, this is possible only by using a key or a
tool. Instead, where the opening is realized by means of a push-button handle, the minimum protection
degree IP20 has been preserved, in such a way to ensure the insulation of the active parts. With the term
“key” we mean a single item or a limited number of items, and the possibility to execute this type of
operations must be entrusted only to trained personnel.

• Every inverter contains key disconnection switches which deactivate the emergency contactor integrated
in the inverter itself, in order to provide to maintenance ([SA1.1] [SA1.2] [SA2.1] [SA2.2] [SA7.1] [SA7.2]).
• An emergency contactor is associated to every inverter HPU. The contactor is controlled by a FAIL-SAFE
output and, if operated, stops the inverter itself.

• Since the used main 600V electric system is of type IT, a proper instrument has been adopted to control
the measure of the insulation value of the plant from ground. Under the threshold values, which can be
configured by the operator, the lost of insulation is signalled. Then the PERSON RESPONSIBLE OF THE
SYSTEM IS CHARGED to manage the stop condition, in order to detect the failure point and to restore
the system status.
Clearly, in case of second ground fault, the STOP CONDITION due to the intervention of the protection
measures will be UNAVOIDABLE!

STARTUP PROCEDURE
• From LOCAL control panel start the generator set turning the 4 position selector on MANUAL START
position. When the engine is running the corresponding signaling lamp turning on.
• From PCR control panel push the close command of generator circuit breaker.
• At this point when the generator set is synchronized with the 600V grid, the system enable the closure of
the circuit breaker.
• When the unit is started it is possible to control the electrical operating parameters through dedicated
page on touch screen in PCR. The engine parameters ( e.g. temperature, fuel level, ecc), can be
controlled on local control panel.
SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE
From PCR control panel push the opening command of generator circuit breaker.
After verifying that the circuit breaker is in open position go to local control panel and turn the 4 position
selector on COOLDOWN STOP position.
When the temperature go down to set value the engine stop.
NOTE: The BLACK-OUT mushroom push button overrides all other commands. Its activation automatically TURN
OFF the entire plant and, as long as active, exclude any possibility of start up.
All the informations regarding the mud pumps (number of strokes etc...) are accessible via dedicated pages on
touch screen.
For each mud pump the start/stop operations are done by proper commands displayed on touch screen.
The speed regulation of the pump can be performed via the corresponding rotary knob or by a numeric keypad
displayed on-screen, using the appropriate command. Inserting the number of strokes via the numeric keypad. By
entering the number of strokes by the numeric keypad, the pump will reach the set speed via an acceleration
ramp.
For simplicity, the following procedure are only referred to the rotary knobs
STARTUP PROCEDURE
• Turn the speed regulation rotary knob of the mud pump that you want to start, in zero position
• Select the START function on touch screen. The system will disable the main electric motor heaters and
shall verify the proper operation of mud pump auxiliaries (blower, lubrication etc...).
If the verification is successful, mud pump main electric motor is powered.
• Then proceed by turning the mud pump speed knob, until the desired number of strokes is not reached.
NOTE: At startup, as long as the mud pump speed knob is not turned in zero position, the system will prevent the
mud pump rotation. This to prevent that the pump starts immediately with a high number of strokes.
SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE
• Turn the speed regulation rotary knob of the mud pump you want to stop, in zero position
• After verifying the shutdown of pump rotation, select the STOP function on touch screen. The system
then proceed to open the main electric motor circuit breaker, turn off the auxiliaries and turn on the main
motor heaters.

Power Control Room is provided with an intelligent system for the management of the available power,
named Power Limit, whose task is avoiding possible plant black-outs to an overload of the generators.
Depending on the power in input (variable depending on the numbers of operating generators), a threshold is
fixed on the available power, in such a way that this is lower than the first one.
When the threshold is reached, the system automatically intervenes, limiting and, if necessary, decreasing the
number of strokes of the mud pumps.
In the different pages, displayed on the two operator panels present in PCR and on that present in Dog
House, a bar is displayed pointing out the power available in percentage on a scale from 0 to 100%
The colour of the bar changes from green to yellow and to red, as the percentage of power absorbed by
the system increases.
When the set threshold is reached (generally about 85% of available power), a message of Power Limit
operating is displayed on the screen.
Until Power Limit is operating, any attempt to increase the number of strokes of the mud pumps is
forbidden by the system. The possible increase of consumption by other utilities causes a decrease of the
number of strokes of the mud pumps themselves.
When the absorbed power returns under the set threshold, the normal plant operation is restored.
