Chapter 1 System definition

This technical manual describes the components and the operating procedures to
respect for the utilization of the power supply cabin of HH-300 plant.
The plant power supply system consists in four 1500kVA power generators, one 250kVA
auxiliary electric set, a PCR cabin containing the manoeuvre switches and the power
transformer to provide the necessary voltage to all equipment. The whole high-automation
system in the Power Control Room is supervisioned by means of proper touch-screens.
System flexibility is ensured by fast connection/disconnection through connectors of the
system itself.

1.1) Description of the plant opertation

• First switch-on and plant power supply sequence

a) Verify the correct connection of the external connectors to the cabin.

b) Activate the emergency lighting by means of the selector on connector panel [S012.13].

c) Switch-on of UPS, located on PLC and Manipulator panel, for the power supply of electronic and
emergency circuits (in case of exhausted batteries, go to the switch-on of the auxiliary electric
set).

d) Restore the black-out emergency relay by means of the proper push-button.

e) Switch-on the auxiliary generator and check the electrical parameters on generator.

f) Close switch [QF06.1] (following the procedure at step 1.4) and close switch [QF07.13]: in this
condition you can power supply the lighting and pump heater circuits.

g) Power the auxiliary circuits of main generator sets, by engaging the switches [QF01.2], [QF02.2],

g) Insert the emergency lighting cutting switch [S012.13].

• Maintenance procedures

Being stated that maintenance operations must be executed, respecting the

made schedules, by qualified personnel; this must be provided with all the necessary
control equipment and even with those materials specified by the scheduled
maintenance.
 For all the extraordinary maintenance operations, that is all the operations
regarding failures which cannot be foreseen, an intervention procedure must be foreseen,
however authorized by a person belonging to the plant and with perfect knowledge about the
complexity of the system object of the interventions. A series of materials of possible use, for the
urgent operations in case of need, must be however provided to maintenance operator. As
regards the management and adjustment system of mechanical plant, the maintenance and the
management of faults and anomalies will be detected, and a specific intervention modality,
directly foreseen by the management program, will correspond to the relevant fault.

 For the on-field maintenance relevant to mud pumps, respect the following prescriptions:
o Pump MP1 motor A: set the fuse main switch [QS1.1] to OFF, turn the key switch SA1.1 to
MAINTENANCE, extract the key, open the maintenance contact located near the pump.
o Pump MP1 motor B: set the fuse main switch [QS1.2] to OFF, turn the key switch SA1.2 to
MAINTENANCE, extract the key, open the maintenance contact located near the pump.
o Pump MP2 motor A: set the fuse main switch [QS2.1] to OFF, turn the key switch SA2.1 to
MAINTENANCE, extract the key, open the maintenance contact located near the pump.
o Pump MP2 motor B: set the fuse main switch [QS2.2] to OFF, turn the key switch SA2.2 to
MAINTENANCE, extract the key, open the maintenance contact located near the pump.

 For the maintenance of the hydraulic power unit motors, it is necessary:

o Motor HPU 1: set the main cutting switch [QS7.1] to OFF, set the “maintenance” selector
[SA7.1] (located inside the inverter itself) to 1.
o Motor HPU 2: set the main cutting switch [QS7.2] to OFF, set the “maintenance” selector
[SA7.2] (located inside the inverter itself) to 1.

1.2) DESCRIPTION OF THE CABIN AND ITS PARTS

• The electric cabin is composed by:

Outside

o A room, for the housing and the support of Transformer BT/BT, completely closed and accessible
only by removing the proper barriers.
o A room for the housing and the support of the air-conditioning machines of the container itself.
o A room for 400/230V connection sockets and auxiliary circuits, located at one end of the
container for the power supply and the control of the utilities on field.
o Rooms for sockets, located along the long sides of the container for the interconnection of the
600V main utilities and of the manipulator.

Inside

o Panels for disconnection and protection of lines from generators and power distribution
o Panels for the start-up of mud pumps M.P.
o Panels for the start-up of hydraulic power unit H.P.U. pumps.
o Panels for the start-up of mud treatment.
o Panel for the distribution of use power supply.
o Panel for manipulator control.

Every panel is provided with I/O remote interface modules for the collection of
information to manage through the central PLC S7-300 and the operator
dialogue units (Touch panels) on the front side of the board.
Every panel /column is identified by a constructive code, allowing the fast detection
of the location of the components in the electrical drawing. Vice versa, from the
component code, it is possible to identify rapidly the page or the set of pages of
the drawing. By using the code of an auxiliary wire connected to the component,
it is possible to arrive to the exact page of the drawing.

• Electric and mechanical interlock between 400V power supply switch from auxiliary generator [QF06.1]
and 400V power supply switch from transformer [QF07.12]. This kind of operation must be executed only
by trained personnel following the reported procedure.

Power supply from Auxiliary set.

If the switch under transformer is
closed, open it by front command
(emergency lights turn-on).
This operation disengages the
mechanical interlock allowing the
closing, by local or remote command,
of the switch of the auxiliary generator
(emergency lights turn-off).

Power supply from transformer.

If the auxiliary generator switch is
closed, open it by front command
(emergency lights turn-on).
Auxiliary This operation disengages the
Transformator mechanical interlock allowing the
Generator
Switch closing, by local command, of the
Switch transformer switch (emergency lights
QF07.12
QF06.1 turn-off).

• Stop and safety circuits of Mud Pumps belong to category SIL 2; PLC boards of type FAIL-SAFE have
been used.

• Protection against direct contacts by barriers and cases. If it was necessary to access to the active parts
removing barriers, opening cases or removing parts of cases, this is possible only by using a key or a
tool. Instead, where the opening is realized by means of a push-button handle, the minimum protection
degree IP20 has been preserved, in such a way to ensure the insulation of the active parts. With the term
“key” we mean a single item or a limited number of items, and the possibility to execute this type of
operations must be entrusted only to trained personnel.
Page 9 di 91
DESIGN Date 10/06/11
HH350B Plant Power supply System Ref. PCR-003A

• An alarm siren [HA82.1] is present in Dog House.

• Every inverter contains key disconnection switches which deactivate the emergency contactor integrated
in the inverter itself, in order to provide to maintenance ([SA1.1] [SA1.2] [SA2.1] [SA2.2] [SA7.1] [SA7.2]).

• An emergency contactor is associated to every inverter HPU. The contactor is controlled by a FAIL-SAFE
output and, if operated, stops the inverter itself.
Page 10 di 91
DESIGN Date 10/06/11
HH350B Plant Power supply System Ref. PCR-003A

• Since the used main 600V electric system is of type IT, a proper instrument has been adopted to control
the measure of the insulation value of the plant from ground. Under the threshold values, which can be
configured by the operator, the lost of insulation is signalled. Then the PERSON RESPONSIBLE OF THE
SYSTEM IS CHARGED to manage the stop condition, in order to detect the failure point and to restore
the system status.
Clearly, in case of second ground fault, the STOP CONDITION due to the intervention of the protection
measures will be UNAVOIDABLE!

2.2) DESIGN ELECTRO-TECHNICAL CALCULATIONS

2.2.a) Calculation of presumed Icc downstream the Generators

 Transformer 1500kVA

In = Sn / (1.73 x Un) = 1445A

Xd” = 12.4 (Vedi allegato 10.1)
Icc = (100 x In) / Xd” = 13,76kA

The demolition off the Icc due to the impedance of the cable negligible, so is not
considered.
Page 12 di 91
DESIGN Date 10/06/11
HH350B Plant Power supply System Ref. PCR-003A

 Transformer 250kVA

In = Sn / (1.73 x Un) = 361A

Xd” = 7.2 (Presunta)
Icc = (100 x In) / Xd” = 5,01 kA

2.2.b) Calculation of presumed Icc downstream the Generators

 Transformer 1000kVA

Ucc% = 4,5%
Icc = (100 x Sn) / (1.73 x Un x Ucc%) = 3,6kA

The lowering of Icc due to cable impedance is minor, and then it is not considered.

 Transformer 250kVA

Ucc% = 4,5%
Icc = (100 x Sn) / (1.73 x Un x Ucc%) = 1,4kA

The lowering of Icc due to cable impedance is minor, and then it is not considered.

 Transformer 75kVA

Ucc% = 4,5%
Icc = (100 x Sn) / (1.73 x Un x Ucc%) = 540A

The lowering of Icc due to cable impedance is minor, and then it is not considered.

2.2.c) Calculation of presumed Icc on Bars

 Bars 600V

Icc = 13,76 x 4 = 55,04 kA

For the sizing of bar supports and switches, Ipk equal to 155kA is considered.

Icc contribution due to great-size motors is not considered, because the inverters do not
allow the return of the current from the Motor (not regenerative)

 Bars 460V (3F)

Icc = max (3,6 ; 1,4) = 3,6 kA

For the sizing of bar supports and switches, Ipk equal to 80kA is considered.

Chapter 5 Special operations

5.1) GESTIONE POWER-LIMIT.

 Power Control Room is provided with an intelligent system for the management of the available power,
named Power Limit, whose task is avoiding possible plant black-outs to an overload of the generators.
Depending on the power in input (variable depending on the numbers of operating generators), a threshold is
fixed on the available power, in such a way that this is lower than the first one.
When the threshold is reached, the system automatically intervenes, limiting and, if necessary, decreasing the
number of strokes of the mud pumps.

In the different pages, displayed on the two operator panels present in PCR and on that present in Dog
House, a bar is displayed pointing out the power available in percentage on a scale from 0 to 100%

The colour of the bar changes from green to yellow and to red, as the percentage of power absorbed by
the system increases.

When the set threshold is reached (generally about 85% of available power), a message of Power Limit
operating is displayed on the screen.

Until Power Limit is operating, any attempt to increase the number of strokes of the mud pumps is
forbidden by the system. The possible increase of consumption by other utilities causes a decrease of the
number of strokes of the mud pumps themselves.

When the absorbed power returns under the set threshold, the normal plant operation is restored.
