Drawing upon oral, textual and visual material collected during more
than a decade of quasi-yearly fieldtrips to Karachi (2001–2013), this book
is a testimony to the innumerable debts that I have accumulated over the
years, starting with my long-time ham qadam sathi Christophe Jaffrelot,
who was the first to suggest that I focus my attention, as a PhD candi-
date, on the ethnic and political fault lines of Karachi. My publisher,
Michael Dwyer, was the driving force behind this book, inviting me to
refocus my attention on Karachi at a time when I was drifting towards
another domain of research. The successive consuls généraux of France
in Karachi, Pierre Seillan and Christian Ramage, honoured me with their
trust and occasionally with their hospitality, while sharing with me their
intimate knowledge of the city and its politics. I am also grateful to Pierre
Seillan for having introduced me to someone who rapidly became my
ustad (mentor) in Karachi, Hidayat Hussain, who initiated me into Urdu
poetry while being a constant source of knowledge and inspiration on all
the topics that caught my attention over the years.
Asif Farrukhi also helped me pursue my interest in Urdu poetry and
introduced me to the ‘family’ of Urdu scholars and lecturers who make
the Bedil Library of Shareefabad such a unique literary institution. Its
chief librarian, Muhammad Zubair, lived up to his reputation as a benev-
olent and immensely resourceful head of this small community. Publisher
Ajmal Kamal was also a source of inspiration and one of the few persons
I know who lived up to his dreams no matter what. Architect and urban
planner Arif Hasan, for his part, made me benefit from his unrivalled
knowledge of the city’s history and sociology, forged by decades of
research and activism. His former colleague at the Orangi Pilot Project
(OPP), the late Perween Rahman, helped me understand better the

changing realities of land supply in Karachi, and more generally the artic-
ulation between the ‘official’ and the ‘unofficial’ economy in the city—a
distinction that I borrow from her. Her brutal death, in March 2013,
came as a terrible shock and this book is dedicated to her memory.
Within the journalistic fraternity of Karachi, Ashraf Khan accompa-
nied me on several difficult interviews, during which he always displayed
an ironclad coolness, even when our interviewees came under fire, as was
the case during our visit to the Markaz Ahl-e-Sunnat. Documentary
film-maker Aziz Sanghur introduced me to Lyari and other Baloch set-
tlements of Karachi, helping me widen the scope of my research by mak-
ing me more aware of the ‘indigenous’, non-Mohajir Karachi, of its
struggles for survival and distinctive cultural make-up. Ahmed Wali
Mujeeb and Zia ur Rehman never ceased to impress me with their knowl-
edge of Karachi’s Pashtun communities, while Mahim Maher helped me
get acquainted with the Pashtun residents and political workers of Kati
Pahari, no matter how bumpy the road to the ‘cut mountain’ proved to
be. Nadeem F. Paracha, for his part, was a wonderful guide in my explo-
ration of Karachi’s student politics and popular culture in the 1960s and
1970s. I am also grateful to Zaffar Abbas, the Editor of Dawn, for allow-
ing me to reproduce some photographs published over the years in the
newspaper.
Among my researcher colleagues, Farhan Hanif Siddiqi regularly
updated me on student politics at the University of Karachi and kindly
shared some of his research material with me. Nida Kirmani accompa-
nied me during most of my visits to Lyari in August 2012 and helped
me revise some of my initial assumptions in the face of empirical evi-
dence. Her sister and brother-in-law, Najia and Aasim Siddiqi, as well
as their brilliant children, Samaa, Kiran and Rayan, were incomparable
hosts and, along with Aarij and Tasneem Kirmani, made Eid-ul-Fitr
2012 one of my most pleasant and gastronomically fulfilling experiences
ever in Pakistan. My geographer colleagues at the Centre de Sciences
Humaines (CSH), Rémy Delage and Olivier Telle, helped me in the
preparation of graphs and pie charts, while Bertrand Lefebvre designed
the maps of the book, displaying admirable patience in the face of my
repeated hesitations. Gilles Favarel-Garrigues, at the Centre d’études et
de recherches internationales (CERI), as well as Karen Barkey at Colum-

ing with Lyari’s bandits, while Mariam Abou Zahab, at CERI, was a

edge on Islamist networks in Karachi and Pakistan at large. Nichola
Khan, at the University of Sussex, taught me that Mohajir militancy was

referees who commented upon the first draft of the manuscript. Master-
ing the art of maieutics, these inspiring readers helped me bring forth
arguments that were only latent in the earlier draft.
During my stay in Delhi, between 2010 and 2013, Maulana Waris
Mazhari assisted me in the translation and exploitation of the oral and
printed Urdu material used throughout the book. Besides his erudition,
his warmth and humour made our long working sessions truly exhilarat-

My earliest visits in Karachi benefited from the support of the French
