Program: B.Tech Branch: Mechanical Engineering Year: II Semester: II
Subject: Numerical Methods for Engineers (ME 2206)

Date: 22nd January, 2024 Start Time: 1600 hrs

Duration: 120 minutes Max. Marks: 100

Instructions:

1. Read through the entire question paper, before beginning your work.

2. State all assumptions clearly.

Numerical Integration Marks: 25

Question 1 Evaluate the integral Z 3

1
dx
−3 1 + x2
a. Using Richardson Extrapolation with Trapezoidal Rule (10)

b. Using two-point Gauss-Legendre formula (10)

c. In both cases, obtain true percent relative error using the analytical solution. (5)

Numerical Differentiation Marks: 25

Question 2 With the help of Taylor series expansions, derive expressions for
a. First derivative using forward, backward, and central differencing. (12)

b. Second derivative using central differencing. (8)

c. For each of these derivative approximations, write down the leading error term and hence
obtain the order of accuracy. (5)

Initial Value Problems Marks: 25

Question 3 Integrate the below ODE over the interval from x = 0 to x = 1, with the inital
value y(0) = 1:
dy √
= (1 + 2y) x
dx
a. Analytically (5)

b. Euler’s method with ∆t = 0.5 and ∆t = 0.25 (10)

c. Using Midpoint method with ∆t = 0.5 (10)

At each time-step, calculate the true percent relative error.
Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) Marks: 25

Question 4 Using a suitable example, describe how any higher-order ODE can be written
as a system of first-order ODEs. Distinguish between ODEs that can be solved by marching
methods and those needing other methods. Given this context, succinctly explain the shooting
method.
