Grammar 2: Zero Conditional

We use the zero conditional when we want to talk about


scientific facts or situations that are always true. They tell us that
.something will happen if another thing happens
** A conditional sentence has two parts (called clauses).

Main clause (result) If clause


(condition)

+ simple present If+ simple present

you get burnt. If you touch a fire,

Examples:
 If it rains, the clothes get wet.
 If we make too much noise, the baby wakes up.

Form:

If + sub.+ present simple, sub. + present simple.

If+ sub. (plural, they, we, you, I ) + base v. , sub (plural) + v1


e.g. If you exercise, you lose weight .

If+ sub.(singular, he, she, it) + base v.+ s/es , sub. (sin.) + V1-
s/es
e.g. If she mixes blue and yellow, she gets green.

Notes:
*We add [es] to the base verb if it ends with (o, x, ch, sh, ss)
e.g. wash => washes / go => goes

**We can put the main clause at first but without using
comma (,) in the middle of the sentence.
e.g. If I cry, I have a headache.
Or I have a headache if I cry.

Before doing the following exercises, let’s remember the rule:
