Waveform coding Tutorial

1. Determine and illustrate the partition levels and reconstruction levels of a uniform quantizer in the range
of (-1,1) with 4 levels.

2. For the sequence {0.2,-0.3,-0.7,0.8,…},

a. Determine the quantized sequence using the uniform quantizer of Prob. 1. Also determine the
mean square quantization error and SNR.
b. Determine the binary stream corresponding to the quantized sequence.

3. Determine and illustrate the partition levels and reconstruction levels of a -law quantizer in the range of
(-1,1) with 4 levels,  =16.

4. For the same sequence as in Problem 2,

a. Determine the quantized sequence using the  -law quantizer of Prob. 3. Also determine the
mean square quantization error and SNR.
b. For this sequence, which method (uniform vs.  -law) gives more accurate result?
c. Determine the binary stream corresponding to the quantized sequence.

5. A PCM system uses a linear quantizer followed by a 7-bit binary encoder. The bit rate of the system is
equal to 50Mbits/s.
a. What is the maximum message bandwidth for which the system operates satisfactorily?
b. Determine the output signal-quantizing noise ratio (SQER) when a full load sinusoidal
modulating wave of frequency 1 MHz is applied to the input.

6. Consider a signal with a pdf f (v)

Ke −|v| −4v4
f (v ) = 
0 elsewhere

a. Find K;
b. Determine the quantization step size if there are 4 levels (Q=4);
c. Calculate the variance of the quantization error.
d. Calculate the SQER.
