DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS
Design Procedure of Flat Belt
Step 1: Material Selection:
Check whether the material and its properties are given in the question or not
If given, write the material design stress here (𝝈𝒅 )
If not given: Assume Belt material as Leather & Pulley material as Cast Iron
Design stress of leather = 2.06 MPa (Databook Pg 291 Eq 14.4)
Step 2: Service Conditions:
Note down the following from question or assume with suitable data:
• Service Factor, 𝐂𝐬 (assume 1.2 to 1.7 if not given)
• Design power, 𝐏𝐝 = P x 𝐂𝐬
• Slip (assume 2% to 5% if not given)
• Joint efficiency (Databook Pg 307 Table14.5)
Step 3: Find the diameter of the driver pulley
To Find the diameter of the driver pulley, use the below equation
𝟑 𝐏
• d = (525 to 630) √𝟐𝚷𝐧 (Data Book Pg 292 Eq 14.9a)
𝐦𝐚𝐱
*Standardize the diameter from Data book Pg 313 Table 14.13b
Step 4: Find the diameter of the driven pulley
To Find the diameter of the driven pulley, use the below equation
𝐷
standard relationship, i = 𝑑
D=ixd
considering the effect of slip
D = (1 - e) i x d (Databook Pg 292 Eq 14.9b)
where e is the slip from step 1
*Standardize the diameter from Data book Pg 313 Table 14.13b
STEP 5: Belt Speed: (v)
𝚷𝐃𝐍
v= (1-e)
𝐝
STEP 6: Centre Distance: (C)
C = (1.5 to 2)(D + d) (Data book Pg 290 Eq 14.2d)
STEP 7: Coefficient of Friction (µ ):
𝟎.𝟕𝟏𝟐
Barth’s Formulae: µ = 0.54 - 𝟐.𝟓𝟒𝟐+𝒗 (Data Book Pg 290 Eq 14.3d)
STEP 8: Length of the Belt (L):
For Open Belt Drive,
𝚷 (𝐃−𝐝)𝟐
L = 2C + 𝟐
(𝐃 + 𝐝) + 𝟒𝐂
(Data Book Pg 290 Eq 14.2d)
STEP 9: Angle of Contact (𝛳):
(𝐃 −𝐝)
Smaller Pulley, 𝛳𝑠 = 𝚷 – 𝐂
(𝐃 −𝐝)
Larger Pulley, 𝛳𝐿 = 𝚷 + (Data Book Pg 289 Eq 14.1a, 14.1b)
𝐂
STEP 10: Width of the Belt:
𝐛𝐭𝐯 𝐰𝐯 𝟐 𝐞µ𝚹 −𝟏
Power Transmitted, P (kW)= [𝛔𝐝 − ][ ]
𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟏𝟎𝟔 𝐠 𝐞µ𝚹
(Data Book Pg 291 Eq 14.5a)
If not given, assume density of the leather belt as 1000.
w=ƒxg
𝐃𝐦𝐢𝐧
If diameter to thickness ratio is not given, assume = 50
𝐭
(Find standard Belt width from Data Book Pg 305 table 14.1)
STEP 10: Tensions of the Belt
(𝐓𝟏− 𝐓𝟐 )𝐯
Power Transmitted, P (kW)= 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎
𝐰𝐛𝐭𝐯 𝟐
Centrifugal Tension,𝐓𝐜 = [ 𝟏𝟎𝟔 𝐠 ] (Data Book Pg 291 Eq 14.3e)
(𝐓𝟏− 𝐓𝒄 )
= 𝐞µ𝚹 (Data Book Pg 290 Eq 14.3c)
(𝐓𝟐− 𝐓𝒄 )
Neglect the effect of Centrifugal Tension if velocity is less than 10m/s.
Compare the above equations and find Tensions
Initial tension √𝐓𝟏 + √𝐓𝟐 = 2√𝐓𝟎 (Data Book Pg 291 Eq 14.8)
Find the number of plies in the belt based on width of the belt
(Databook Pg 311 Table14.9b)
