Antiviral Drugs Uses
Dose & side effects
1. ACYCLOVIR

• Use: Herpes simplex


(HSV), Varicella-zoster
(VZV)

• Mechanism of Action :
Inhibits viral DNA
polymerase
1. ACYCLOVIR
• Dose:
HSV: 200-400 mg 5 times/day
Shingles: 800 mg 5 times/day
• Side Effects:Nausea, headache, renal
toxicity
• Indian Brands: Acivir, Herpex, Zovirax
2. OSELTAMIVIR
Use: Influenza A & B
echanism: Neuraminidase inhibitor (prevents viral release) |
Common Symptoms of Influenza A & B:
1.Fever (often high, 100°F–104°F or higher, especially in
children)
2. Chills & Sweats
3. Cough (usually dry)
4.Sore Throat
5.Runny or Stuffy Nose
2. OSELTAMIVIR
Common Symptoms of Influenza A & B:
6. Muscle or Body Aches (can be severe)
7. Headache
8.Fatigue (extreme tiredness)
9. Weakness
10. Shortness of Breath(more common in severe
cases)
2. OSELTAMIVIR

Dose: 75 mg twice daily for 5 days


• Side Effects:Nausea, vomiting,
headache
• Indian Brands:Tamiflu, Antiflu
3. SOFOSBUVIR + LEDIPASVIR
Use: Hepatitis C (HCV genotype 1 & 4)
Mechanism: HCV NS5B polymerase
inhibitor |
Dose: 400 mg + 90 mg once daily for
12 weeks
Side Effects: Fatigue, headache,
anemia
Indian Brands: MyHep LV, LediHep
4. REMDESIVIR
Use: COVID-19 (severe cases)
Mechanism : RNA polymerase inhibitor (delays
viral RNA synthesis)
Dose: 200 mg IV on Day 1, then 100 mg/day for
5-10 days
Side Effects: Liver enzyme elevation, nausea
Indian Brands: Cipremi, Covifor
Common Side Effects of Antivirals:
Nausea, vomiting, diarrheaHeadache,
dizziness
Kidney/liver toxicity(Tenofovir,
Acyclovir)
Anemia (Ribavirin)
