THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN

INTRODUCTION:
Jesus is the son of God…….
➤GOSPEL means good news, good tidings.
➤The special emphasis of John is the Deity of Jesus. Gives the things Jesus said
rather than the things He did.
➤The main intention of John is to generate spark believing Faith in the heart of
believers.
➤This is a topical book, the other three are called SYNOPTICAL gospels.
➤It contains seven miracles and seven I AM `s stated by Christ
➤He mainly focuses on Jesus is the son of God.

JOHN{Hebrew} means God is gracious
JOHN -LOANNEN (gk): Yahweh has been gracious
➤His father’s name is Zebedee, Mt 4:21
➤His mother’s name is Salome, mt 15:40 …who by comparing Jn 19:25, seems
possibly to have been a sister of Mary the mother of Jesus. If so then John is the
first cousin of Jesus, and being about the same age, must have known Him from
child hood.
➤He was a disciple of John the Baptist Jn 1:35,40

➤On the Baptist’s testimony he became an immediate disciple of Jesus. Jn 1:
35-51, one of first five disciple.
➤Christ nicknamed him and his brother James “sons of thunder” mk 3:17, which
seems to imply that he had a vehement(anger), violent temper. But this he
brought under control.
➤He is the one of the three inner circle disciples, and was recognized as one of
closest to Jesus

1 -2 IN THE BEGINNING: - This was the beginning of the creation of all
things (gen 1:1; Jn 17:5;1jn1:1)
WAS: - It states about the past tense of the word (LOGOS)WORD, the
continuous existence before creation.
THE WORD: - Jesus is the word; He is the totality of God’s message to
man (1:14,18)
WITH GOD: - The word (Jesus) was in existence with God before creation.
He was in equality with God in existence.
THE WORD WAS GOD: - God (Theos gk) here he stresses about the word
also a God; (father, son, holy spirit)
V2 He was in the beginning with God: the preexistent word was identified
to be with God (gen 1:26)

MAIN THINGSIN THE CHAPTER: -

3. The time taken to build the Jerusalem temple is forty-six years (46)
4.Destroy the temple “I will build it in three days” V19
5. It was a Herod’s temple to which Jesus referred. I t was an elaborate
structure that had become the symbol of Jewish pride (mt 26:61; 27: 40).

CHRIST CHANGES WATER INTO WINE


1 – 10 The first miracle in the city of CANA. With six pots of water.
➤ Cana is 4 miles NE of Nazareth.
CANA means the place of reeds (రెల్లు ఉన్న ప్రదేశం)
2: 4 WOMAN is used for His mother it is not disrespect or harsh word but it is a
neutral word that’s does not show any relation when He was in His Fathers
work.
➤ My hour has noy yet come: - what is meant here is that His opportunity to
work the miracles on this particular occasion had not yet come (7: 6).
11 -12 His disciples believe Him strongly.
CHRIST CLEANSES THE TEMPLE
13 – 25 Christ fought against the activities which going in the temple, and he
got anger.
➤ House of merchandise: business house
➤ A whip of small cords: a small rope which is used to beat/ strike animals.
V19 it is about His resurrection after His crucifixion.

CHRIST WITNESSES TI NICODEMUS
1: 21 Nicodemus: Victory of people / conqueror of people.
➤He is a pharisee, member of Sanhedrin.
➤ He was with joseph who buried Jesus (19: 39)
➤He is a secret disciple of Christ.
V2 CAME BY NIGHT: -the night is the best opportunity to a Jews leader to
meet Jesus secretly …. To not to face any problems from leaders those who
doesn’t believe Christ.
➤RABBI means teacher.
3 – 14 about born again …it means about Baptism.
(here Jesus explained Nicodemus about baptism with the things from Old
Testament and from Moses).
V16 the golden verse ……. GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD…
➤ It states about the unlimited and boundaryless love of God by sacrificing
His only own son for us.

JOHN THE BAPTIST WITNESSES CONCERNING CHRIST


22 – 36 John’s testimony about Christ
➤ Both Jesus and John the Baptist are working in lower Jordan at a same
time.
➤Jesus has a great following than john because of the miracles he performing
(10: 41).
V28 here John says he is not Christ but a proclaimer of Christ.
And he decreases and increase Jesus Infront of all.
V35,36 everything is in his hands …. In His name only everlasting life, and who
does not believe HIM will see God’s angry.

CHAPTER -4
MAIN THINGS IN THE CHAPTER: -
➤ Samaritan woman.
➤ Christ heals the noble’s son.
➤ Jesus did not give baptism to anyone (Jn 4:2) but His disciples gave baptism.
➤John imprisoned after 8 months ministry at lower Jordan ... Heros imprisoned
him.
SAMARITANS: - they were colonists (migrates, one who does not live in own
land).
➤they were planted by Assyrian’s 700 years before (Ezra 4:1,9,10.); (2king17:6,
24, 26, 29).
➤They were also waiting for Messiah.
CHRIST WITNESSES TO THE WOMAN AT THE WELL
1 – 26 (6V) Jacob’s well.100 feet deep, 9 feet diameter.
➤Living water: -all spiritual blessings reference to one’s salvation would be
flowed from the cross for the redemption of all men at once.
➤That lady confronts all her sins and proclaimed about Christ in her city.
V24, it means they don’t know whom they are worshipping, they just followed
Jews tradition, Jesus said worship the God in spirit and truth not by imitating
others. (SPIRIT means Holy spirit).

27 – 38 It is about the need of gospel to every mankind.
35 – 38 about God, Prophets, Jesus, and them (disciples)
Sowers, laborers – prophets; Reapers - disciples.

39 -42 Samaritans believed in Christ not only by the words of the lady but by
hearing Christ’s words …….
CHRIST IS RECEIVED BY THE GALILEANS
43 – 45 Their will be no respect to one who does God’s in their own land or
from own people.
CHRIST HEALS THE NOBLE MAN’S SON
46 - 54 It was a second miracle done by Jesus near CANA, at CAPERNAUM.
➤CAPERNAUM means Village of comfort …which is also known the “Own city of
Jesus during His ministry”.
➤This identified as the master of distance … Jesus healed that boy from a
distance without touching or seeing him.

CHAPTER -5
MAIN THINGS IN THE CHAPTER: -
Christ heals the paralytic man, suffering from 38 years.
JESUS HEALS THE PARALYTIC MAN
1 – 9 FEASTS but it doesn’t mention about what feast.
PASSOVER: April celebrated exodus from Egypt 1400 years before
PENTECOST: June. 50 days later, celebrating of giving the law.
TABERNACLE: October. Celebrating ingathering of the harvests.
DEDICATION: December. Called “lights”. Started by Judas Maccabaeus.
PURIM: shortly before Passover. No mention of Gospels.
➤Jesus returned to Galilee in December about the time of feast of Dedication
(Jn3:22-36)
The following next feast would be PURIM and next to it is PASSOVER.
➤In that occasion Jesus healed a paralytic person from 38 years.
CHRIST HEALS ON SABBATH

10 -16 According to Jews custom none should work on Sabbath, but here the
healed man walking with his bed … by this Jewish leader find a mistake in Him.
(Jer 17:19-27, Nehe 13: 15-22).
➤by this allegation the Jewish leader sought to kill Jesus.
➤Some more healing done by Christ on the day of sabbath: -
1.A Demonic in Capernaum MK 1:21-27.
2.Peter’s mother-in-law in Capernaum MK 1:29-31.
3.An important man, in Jerusalem JN 5:1-9.
4. Man with withered hand, MK 3:1-6.
5.women bowed together, LK 14:1-6.
6.Man with dropsy, LK 14:1-6.
7. Man born blind, JN 9:1-14.

EQUALITY WITH GOD IN NATURE


17 – 18 They got angrier upon Jesus’s words of comparing Himself with God
(Philip 2:6,7 He is equal with God).
EQUALITY WITH GOD IN POWER
19 – 21 Jesus can do things as God does.
EQUALITY WITH GOD IN AUTHORITY
22 – 30 The authority is given to son to judge … everything was created through
Him (cl 1:16), and He is the one who died for all 1:29, so it follows the son has
right to judge (3;35;17:2).
24V ➤In the above verses it has proven that Jesus has authority to judge ….
with addition that here He I saying that he who believes in His words will not
have judgement but have eternal life.
➤HE has every quality that His Father has.
WITNESS OF JOHN THE BAPTIST

31 -35 John is the true witness of me.
WITNESSES ABOUT HIM
36 -47 ➤All his works witness Him as son of God
➤ Father who has sent Him testified of Him
➤ The scriptures which have eternal life is testifying Me, Moses has
written about ME. If you trust him, believe in Me.

CHAPTER -6
MAIN THINGS IN THE CHAPTER: -
1.feeding the five thousand.
2.the storm at the sea.
3.jesus as the bread of life.
4.some leave Jesus.
 CHRIST FEEDS FIVE THOUSAND (5000)
(MT 14:13-21; MK 6:31-44; LK9:10-17)
1 -14 Jesus feeding 5000 is the fourth (4) miracle that John recorded in the
book.
➤ This is the only one miracle which is recorded by four writers.
➤ This is a miracle of creation, it proves that everything was created by Him
(jn1:1,2; cl 1:16).
➤ Five breads and two small fish.
JESUS WALKS ON WATER
15 – 21 (V14,15) people want to enthrone Him as a king but Jesus refused it and
went to mountains to pray (MK 6:46).
➤ Disciples are going to Capernaum, after completing prayer Jesus also started
to Capernaum but by walk on the water.
➤By looking at Him they were frightened.

This is the fifth miracle that John recorded (5)
➤The disciples realized that they were truly under the presence of Son of God.
“It represents Jesus’s power over nature”
I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE
22 -66 Jesus as the bread of life.
V27 if we follow Jesus only for physical benefits in lives it is vane of following
Him … the physical things will be destroyed one day, but we should follow Him
for spiritual things.
V29 they are asking about the physical works to please God, but Jesus said if
anyone want to please God it is possible by believing Jesus is His son.
V35 here this verse speaks with the addition of above verses about Moses and
manna, Jesus said the food which Has given to by Moses is not of Moses but it is
My father’s.
➤But here I AM the living bread, I AM the life from the heaven, which is sent by
My Father.
V37 If Father send’s someone to Me I won’t reject him.
➤Those who come to with a repented heart of believing as Son living God he
will have eternal life.
V40 it strongly states about eternal life is in JESUS only.
V44, it means one should have a good and pure life that attracts God.
52 -58 speaks about the importance of LORD’S supper.
60 – 66 some leave Jesus. they quarrel in themselves and left Jesus ... He knows
everything…
“The physical body is temporary but spirit has eternity”
67 – 71 the twelve are stable and didn’t leave Jesus.
“Those who doesn’t focus on the physical body or things they only can lead life
with Christ, not only a worker of Christ but also the believer of Christ” (focus on
the above things Colo 3:2).

CHAPTER – 7
MAINTHINGS IN THE CHAPTER: -
1.The feast of tabernacles.
2.Questions concerning Jesus.
3.Attempt to arrest Jesus.

CHRIST’S BROTHERS DO NOT BELIEVE HIM.


1 – 13 This was at the Feast of Tabernacle, October, a year and a half since He
had been there, and six months before His death.
➤On His previous visit He had healed a man on the sabbath, and had
announced to the rulers that He was the Son of God JN 5:18; for this they laid a
plan to kill Him.
V3 these are the fleshly brothers of Jesus, the children who born to Mary and
Joseph after the birth of Jesus (matt12:46, 13:55).
➤They are James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas, they didn’t believe Him as a Son of
God.
MY TIME HAS NOT YET COME: its means if He goes to Galilee He will be killed by
Jews, but His work has not yet completed to face the death.
CHRIST’S AUTHORITY FROM THE FATHER
14 – 24 the deity of Jesus.
Jesus called Himself “The Son of God”, Jn 5:25,
Making Himself equal with God Jn 5:18,
Three times Jesus categorically said “I AM THE SON OF GOD” Mk 14:61, 62; Jn
9:53-37; 10:36.

25 -31 Jews are trying to kill Jesus; the murder plot of Jesus has revealed in the
Jerusalem. Jesus talks about His origin that from where He has come.

37 – 39 He is the living water which gives life to the men, but those who
believes Him he will find it.

44 – 53 Nicodemus also speaks in favor to Jesus, and some of the Jews also
believed in Him, but some thought king does not come from Galilee.

MAIN THINGS IN THE CHAPTERE: -
1. A woman caught in adultery.
2. Jesus shows mercy and forgiveness.
3. The light of the world
4. Jesus exposes the enemies.
5. The true sons of Abraham.
A WOMAN CAUGHT IN ADULTERY
1 – 11 the woman taken in adultery.
➤There are no one in the world that never sinned.
➤ One should not sin again after getting the forgiveness from the God.
I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
12 – 59 Jesus continues discourse on His deity
➤Light of the world it means who has come to the world to enlighten it with
salvation

CHAPTER – 9
MAIN THINGS IN THE CHAPTER: -
1. Christ heals the born blind person.
2. Siloam pool. (which means SENT).
3. Jesus worshipped by blind man.
4. Dealing with the rejection.
CHRIST HEALS THE BLINDMAN
1 – 41 the whole chapter deals with the healing of the blind person and the
rejection of Christ.
V1,2 who sinned…… it is common belief in Jews that they would reap the
consequences of their own sin... but according to RM 3:9,10,23; ALL ARE
SINNED.
The disciples are simply expressing their beliefs concerning sin and physical
infirmity (physical or mental weakness).
V4,5 His ministry is going to end on this earth …the cross is near.
V6,7 it represents just to obey His commandment. There is no power in the clay
but it is the hand who applied it.
➤This is the second miracle that Jesus did in the day of sabbath (5:9)
V39 Judgement. Those who does not follow tradition instead of God they will be
put in judgement
➤those who cannot see God /Jesus and accept His works they are still remained
in their sins.

➤We should not neglect the truth by following the


traditions and man-made customs.

CHAPTER – 10

MAINTHINGS IN THE CHAPTER: -


1. Jesus is the good shepherd.
2. Jesus is the door.
3. The feast of dedication.
4. Jewish hostility (unfriendly or aggressive behavior).
1 – 21 I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD……
Sheep: people, believers
Way: address, vehicle, pass, only option.
Thief: false teachers, prophets, teachers.
Sheepfold: church (correct or right doctrine).

➤In these verses Jesus speaks about the true and false preachers and teachers.
➤He is the way to heaven. His teachings only can help one to reach the heaven.
V16, it means gentile, one who does not believe or know about Christ.
Whenever they accept Jesus, there will be no divisions like Christian and gentile.
V11 I will give my life for my sheep
V15, I lay down my life for sheep
V17, I lay down my life and I may take it again
V18a no one can take it from me
V18b, I have a power to lay it down, I have power to take it again.

➤In all these verses states that Jesus has authority over death, and in above
verses He has spoken about authority over life also.

22 – 42 THE OPPOSITION AT THE FEAST OF DEDICATION IN JERUSALEM
➤here all these verses the blame up on Jesus is He called Himself as the God
(According to the mosaic law it is a sin against the law but here in V37-39, the
unity of father and son were manifested in the miraculous works that Son did in
(3:2, 20:30,31).

➤The Jews are trying to caught Him and wanted to put Him to death.

CHAPTER - 11
MAINTHINGS IN THE CHAPTER: -
1.The death of Lazarus.
2.The resurrection of Lazarus.
3.Reaction to resurrection of Lazarus

➤Two lazaruses in the bible 1. Luke 16: 19-31 the beggar in the parable,
2.John 11:1-44 the brother of Mary and Martha
JESUS RAISES LAZARUS FROM DEATH

➤Probably about a month before his own death.


➤ It was his third raising of the dead: Jairus' daughter, Mk 5:21-43, who had
just died.

➤the widow of Nain's son, Lk 7:11-17, on his way to burial;


➤ Lazarus, dead four days; climaxed by his own, nevermore to die. The miracle
made a profound impression on Jerusalem, but brought the Sanhedrin to a final
decision to kill Jesus, 53. Jesus therefore retired to the wilderness of Ephraim,
about 12 miles north of Jerusalem, to await, in quiet with the Twelve, the
Passover.
1 - 57 CHRSIT RAISES LAZARUS

➤Lazarus of Bethany ...he was the brother of Mary and Martha, they
lived on the slope of the mountain of Olives east of Jerusalem (mk
14:3-9, lk 10:38-42).
➤Mary who anointed …... here John identified Mary as one who
anointed Jesus’s feet (12:1-8).
➤here she is a great example to the believers about her servitude and
worshipping God.
V6 Jesus is waiting to conform that Lazarus was died, with that man’s
death Jesus wanted to show God’s power …. moreover, He knows that
Lazarus will raise again.
V11,12 Lazarus sleeps, it means from the view point of God death is
but a sleep from which all saints will awake (dt31:16, jr51:57, dn12:2,
mt9:24, 27:54, act7:60, 1cor7:39, 15:18,51, 1thess4:12-18).
➤Bethany is three (3) kilometers east of Jerusalem.
1.Bethany means house of figs and afflictions.
2.jerusalem means city of peace, foundation of peace.
3.mary (MIRIAM heb) means bitter (Mar meaning), beloved (Egypt)
4.martha means mistress of house.
5.lazarus (ELEAZER heb) means God has helped, God is my help.
EL – GOD, AZAR – HELP
V25 – 27 the resurrection and the life …... if one believes in Him, he will
raise from death(physical), and one believes in Him will not see death
anymore (spiritual).
➤ JESUS WEPT it written three times in this chapter it shows the love
of Christ for His beloved people.
All these miracles prove Jesus is the Son of God.

MAIN THINGS IN THE CHAPTER: -
1.Anointing of Jesus at Bethany.
2.The supper at Bethany.
3.the triumphal entry.
4.the Greek’s desire to see Jesus.
5. the unbelief of Greeks.
6.Jesus’s final message in the temple.
MARY ANOINTS CHRIST (mat 26:6-12, mk14:3-9)
1 – 11 ANOINTING CHRIST IN BETHANY
➤ Mary sister of Lazarus anoints Christ in a house with a very
costly and valuable perfume by pouring it on the feet of Jesus
and wiped with her hair it shows her great respect for Christ.
➤oil of spikenard for three hundred denarii is about 50 dollars
at that time

➤ BETHANY Hebrew word means House of figs, house of
afflictions.

HILL OF BETHANY, where Jesus was ascended


Bethany is about two miles from Jerusalem, on the east slope
of the mount Olives. It was Jesus’s abiding place when He
visited Jerusalem, from the hills Bethany Jesus ascended to
heaven.
V8, it states about Jesus’s death and leaving the earth.
12 – 22 THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY
The fulfillment of the prophesy of Isaiah.
