The naval version of the Spitfire started with the Seafire Ib (Type 340), which was a Spitfire VB abapted for FAA use. It had the 1,415
hp Merlin 46, no wing fold but a hook and slinging points and 266 were converted. The Seafire IIc (Type 357) had catapult spools,
strengthened landing gear, the 1,645 hp Merlin 32 and a four-blade propeller. The type used the new ‘universal wing’ and 262 were built by
Supermarine with an additional 110 by Westland. The Seafire III (Type 358) featured a manual double-fold wing and the 1,585 hp Merlin
55M engine and 870 were built by Westland, plus 350 by Cunliffe-Owen. The Seafire XV (Type 377 & 386) was the first Griffon-powered
version, using the 1,850 hp Griffon VI and four-blade propeller, it had symmetric radiators and was really a cross between the Seafire Mk
III and a Spitfire Mk XII; 390 were built. The Seafire XVII (Type 384) had increased fuel capacity, a cut-down dorsal fuselage and bubble
hood. Just 232 were built as the end of WWII curtailed production. The Seafire 45 (Type 388) was based on the Spitfire F Mk 21 and either
had the Griffon 61 with a five-blade propeller or the Griffon 85 with contra-rotating propellers, it had a fixed wing with four 20mm cannon
and 50 were built. The penultimate Seafire was the F Mk 46 (Type 388) and this was a navalised version of the Spitfire F Mk 22, with
just 24 being built. The final Seafire was the FR Mk 47 (Type 388), a navalized Spitfire F Mk 24 fitted with hydraulically folding wings, a
carburettor air intake just behind the propeller and increased fuel capacity. The type fought in Malaya and Korea and 140 were built.

FINAL VERDICT
Well, this was a thoroughly enjoyable build. Yes, these kits are a little more work than a mainstream one, but the result is worth it. Special Hobby has
produced a super kit here and the end result is a superb late-model Seafire. I posted some pictures of this on Hyperscale and several people thought it
was the Airfix 1:48 kit – I think that says it all. Highly recommended.

FINAL VERDICT
Zvezda’s new kit fills another gap as the Fw 190A-4 has been missed for many years in 1:72. The kit captures all the main Fw 190 attributes and
despite a few compromises in detail, especially in the cockpit, it can be recommended as a straight build or as the basis for further improvement.
Obviously its inexpensive nature makes it an ideal subject for occasional and less experienced builders too.

Plane Facts
Built to meet the envisaged shortage of fighters from the UK and USA during the early stages of WWII, the Boomerang is often stated as
being the idea of Lawrence Wackett, the CEO of CAC, but in fact it was a design study undertaken by a team set up following preliminary
design drawings by Alan Bolton (Design Engineer) and Fred David (Chief Design Engineer), at the instigation of Fred David. The first
CA-12 flew 29th May 1942 and this was followed by another 104 examples (serial numbers A46-1 to A46-105). A slight revision was made
once the CA-12 production had come to an end, and a second production contract was issued for this type, known as the CA-13 (A46-
106 to A46-200). A single supercharged version was built as the CA-14, but this was later extensively modified to become the CA-14A
(A46-1001), although no production of the type was undertaken because by this time the Spitfire was becoming available in quantity in the
theatre. The last production version was the CA-19, 49 of which were built, and the last 39 were built to undertaken the Tac/R role (A46-
201 to A46-249). Two projected versions were envisaged of the type, the P-176 and XP-17, but neither of them got any further than the

FINAL VERDICT
This is not an easy kit by any stretch of the imagination. At times it’s frustrating, there’s plenty of additional detail that could be added if you want to
and every stage of the complex build requires careful planning and lots of trial fits and trimming. But look at what you get, a very nice model of one of
the forgotten heroes of WWII. This aircraft has so much character and even in this scale it’s not huge so it won’t fill up the shelf too much. As long as
you’ve got some resin experience and have the patience to cope with it then this is a model definitely worth having.
TECHNIQUE
We continue our series of techniques used by MAI
contributors with a look at how to paint and weather
inline engine exhausts by Steve A. Evans
Background
All aircraft with an engine have them but the piston-engine variety can be a bit of a problem to get the exhaust stubs looking suitably hot and dirty.
There are probably as many ways of dealing with this as there are modellers but here’s a straightforward and fairly simple method that doesn’t use
any exotic materials.

It seems as if Airfix are not resting on their laurels, as they continue to follow
a busy production schedule of 1:72 WWII subjects. The latest is the Hawker
Typhoon, one of the pivotal RAF types at the end of the war on the European
continent. It can be said that the last couple of years have been really good
for Spitfire fans, well now it seems the same can be said for Typhoon fans.
At the beginning of the year a couple of late mark Typhoon kits were released
by Brengun (and they are apparently going to release the earlier versions
soon), followed by the news of this new kit from Airfix. Of course you cannot
discount the older, but still decent, Academy and HobbyBoss kits.

Now I turned my attention to the
remaining sub-assemblies and smaller
details. The rocket rail bodies received
the guide tubes cut from plastic stock,
while the rockets were used straight from
the box despite their thick looking fins
(next time I will replace them with the
etched fins from the Brengun set). At the
end of each rocket I added the cable and
‘pigtail’ plugs cut from thin copper wire
with a blob of cyanoacrylate glue at the
end, which was then all painted black.

are really nice, having the typical ‘L’

Once painted and weathered the undercarriage parts are quite effective
that helped to brake the main wheels
once the legs were retracted. At the end The kit lacks the distinctive ‘cuckoo doors’ on the intake, so this
was made using the door element from the Brengun/Valiant Wings
I scratchbuilt the dust filter with its typical Typhoon Intake Set glued to a suitable length of plastic rod
‘cuckoo’ doors. The earlier model dome-
shaped filter often got blasted off when
the engine backfired and these freely
moving doors on the modified filter helped
to solve this problem. I utilized the front
face of an older Brengun Typhoon intake
screen set and the filter body itself was
cut from thicker plastic round stock with
ribs scored with a scalpel blade. From thin
plastic strips I added the horizontal and
vertical brackets, sprayed it all dark grey
and glued it into the nose opening, mating
the filter precisely with the extended face
protruding from the centre of the radiator
body. ● Once all the support rods are added and the unit is put in With everything in place it is just time to add additional detail
position it looks vastly superior to that offered from the box such as the ‘pigtails’ for the rockets
FINAL VERDICT
In my opinion Airfix have definitely left the ‘easy kit’ label, bringing to the market the best mainstream kit of the late mark Typhoon in 1:72. Their
concept of combining an attractive subject at a lower price coupled with overall good quality and level of detail makes it really tempting. The
presence of competition does of course give modellers a choice and looking at the Brengun kit, it is obviously aimed at more experienced builders
and because of the inclusion of more versions, especially the car-door one, this kit is also a very welcome addition. All in all, a very good job Airfix,
and let me express my personal wish for the future – can we now have new 1:72 Beaufighter and Blenheim kits in the same quality please?

FINAL VERDICT
I loved building this kit and the end result is simply fantastic. It’s huge, it’s detailed and it’s not too expensive. This kit has received a bit of a bashing
from some quarters over perceived shape issues. Personally I don’t think the issues with the fuselage and nacelle shapes are that much to worry
about, who knows unless you happen to have an accurate set of plans next to the build? The propellers are a mess though, so mine are tacked on
with rubber glue in the hope of aftermarket replacements appearing! The biggest problem with this kit is finding somewhere to display it! If you have
one in your stash – build it, enjoy it, I did.
T
his is a new tooling from Trumpeter and inside the large box you will find twelve grey-
coloured and three clear plastic sprues, along with three rubber tyres and three frets of
photo-etched brass. With well over 380 parts this is quite a detailed kit and you get full
engines in each nacelle (with access panels that can be posed open), retractable arrestor
hook, the 2mm cannon in the tail, the option to fold the outer wing panels, air brakes that
can be posed open or closed and bomb bay doors that can also be shown open or closed. Detail on
the flightdeck is good, although much of the side console and instrument panel detail is via etched
brass and you also get etched belts for the seats. The radar scanner is included and the wheel wells
build up as tubs and have rubber wheels that will probably upset a few! The bomb bay is also built
up as a box, but there is nothing to go inside it. The wing features separate leading edge slats and
the wing is split in half to allow it to be folded, unlike some recent kits from Trumpeter that give the
modeller the true option of folding the wings by having cut-marks inside the wing halves; this way
doing the wings unfolded will certainly require extra work to get a faultless join? The rudder and
elevators are also supplied separately.
The kit only offers one decal option, BuNo.138941 of VAH-9, although there are two additional sheets of
decals (not shown in accompanying images) offering numbers and letters to depict other aircraft in the unit.

Verdict: The Skywarrior has been top of the list of ‘most wanted’ kits in 1:48 for many years and this
new tooling from Trumpeter will keep many happy. It is a big kit, having the good (parts count/detail)
and bad (rubber tyre/decals) elements we all love and loathe about Trumpeter. This kit should be
within the scope of all modellers, even the relatively inexperienced, and our thanks go to Pocketbond
Ltd for the review sample.
H
aving done the basic licence-built S-58 in HU.5 form already (See Issue 94),
Italeri have now made some revisions with new parts to backdate it to the
HAS.3 version. These revisions mainly deal with the front end and the rotor, all
of which are done via new sprues (three in total), so really this kit is 75% new.
The build will be similar to the HU.5 done in Issue 94, although the revised
nose components may now alleviate the fit issues seen on the previous kit. Photo-etched
is supplied for the instrument panel, seat belts and various screens plus you get a panel
of plastic mesh to cover the openings in the nose etc.
The kit offers four decal options: XP142, ‘Humphrey’, No.737 Sqn on HMS Antrim, Falkland
Islands, 1982; XM870 and XM328, both No.737 Sqn, HMS Antrim, 1982; XT257, No.1 SofTT,
RAF Cosford, 1967. The decal sheet includes a full set of stencils.

(4+ Publications 1998 ISBN; 809-902559-0-6)
Verdict: This is the version probably most modellers were after, and the inclusion of
‘Humphrey’ will be welcomed by many as it is the icon of the type. The kit should be
within the scope of all modellers, even the relatively inexperienced, and our thanks go to

A
Z continue to tackle subjects that although already done, are now a little
long in the tooth and, in many cases, lacking in accuracy. This kit is actually
an upgrade of the MD500 released in 2010 to create the OH-6 and it
contains 38 parts in dark grey-coloured plastic plus seven in clear. Because
‘common’ parts are used throughout their new series of Cayuses, this one
includes all the resin parts that only apply to the ‘International’ boxing, so these can
join the spares box. Surface detail is nice clear recessed lines etc., but the limited
nature of the tooling process means that there are big ejector pin marks in the fuselage
interior. Finer detail is also a little lacking, all down to the injection process, but AZ
have not included things like lap straps in photo-etched, which is a shame. As with any
Cayuse, the fit of the main canopy ‘bowl’ will be the make or break here. The generic
nature of the instruction sheet does mean you have to keep your wits about you as in
this one there is mention of the Venezuelan and Spanish versions, which only appear
in kit AZ7427.
The kit offers four decal options, none of which are identified in any way in the colour
profiles on the back of the box. These include S/Nos. 17340, 16419, 67935 and 24211, all of
the US Army during the Vietnam War. All colours are quoted by Humbrol paint numbers.

Verdict: OK, the Italeri one already exists, but this is a new tooling and although
limited in many ways it has the edge on surface detail etc., so with a little work can
be made into a nice looking model. Suited for intermediate and above, our thanks go
to AZ Model for the review sample.
N
ow this is a kit that we have waited a long time for, as it was first announced by
Trumpeter way back in 2007. The large box contains 29 sprues of grey-coloured
and three sprues of clear plastic, plus four rubber tyres, metal undercarriage legs
and a small fret of photo-etched brass. In all this gives you 837 parts, so that
should give you some idea of just how extensive this one is! The ejection seats
have etched belts, whilst the compressor fans visible in the intakes are also in etched brass.
Options in the kit include trailing edge slats that can be posed up or down, air brakes you can
have open or closed, tail hook and avionics basket that can be lowered, a nice rendition of
the radar, which can also have the radome posed open, engine access panels that you can
open, and wing fold. The detail is extensive, and this kit is very much ‘old guard’ in that you
have both engines with their intake and exhaust trunking, even though very little will be seen
unless you choose to clutter the exterior lines with open panels? Again the wing fold is not an
option as such, as the wings are moulded in two halves, not offered with cut-lines inside for
you to make the decision to cut apart. Ordnance comes in the form of fuel tanks, AGM-12 and
AGM-45 missiles, GBU-8 smart bombs and Mk 82 or M117 iron bombs. An entire A3 sheet of
instructions is given over just to the painting and decalling of the ordnance.
The kit offers two decal option, not identified in any way on the instructions, but they are:
BuNO.152940 of VA-35 on USS Enterprise; BuNo.155717 of VA-145 on USS Ranger. Both
are in the Light Gull Grey over white scheme.

● A-6 Intruder by L. Drendel, Walk Around No.2 (Squadron/Signal Publications 1994 ISBN:0-89747-327-2)
Verdict: This is a monster of a kit, and built is going to dominate your display area. The
volume of detail in the box will probably lead many to add yet more, because with all
the panels open and the avionics bay down, this one will keep the eye busy for quite
a while. It has been six years in the making, but we very much doubt anyone will be
disappointed with this one. Our thanks go to Pocketbond Ltd for the review sample.
T
his is another subjects from Trumpeter that has been ‘due’ for quite a while, as it was
first announced back in 2010. The large box contains 18 sprues of grey-coloured
plastic along with a single one in clear plastic, three rubber tyres and a small fret of
photo-etched brass giving a total of 428 parts. The kit has a nicely detailed muli-part
engine along with the front bulkhead and oil tank etc. The cockpit interior builds up as
a tub with all the side console detail moulded, not as etched; the seat belts are etched however.
Numerous bulkheads are fitted into the fuselage and the engine cowls can be depicted open or
closed. The rudder and elevators are separate whilst the wing is split mid-span to allow it to be
folded and the flaps and ailerons are also separate. The machine-guns are included for each
wing (inner and outer halves), as they are visible at the root once the wing is folded. Being the
Spad you get lots of wing pylons and onto these you can hang the supplied AN-M64 500lb GP
bomb, Mk 82 iron bomb, LAU-3 or Suu-14A/A rocket launchers, 5in HVAR, Mk 81 iron bombs,
drop tanks, M117 bombs or AN-M66 2,000lb GP bomb. You even get the ‘toilet bomb’, however
that was dropped by an A-1H Skyraider (BuNo.135297) from USS Midway, so is not applicable
to this version.
The kit offers two decal options: BuNo.127003 of VA-95 ‘Green Lizards’, USS Ranger; BuNo.132364,
VMA-324, USMC, USS Saipan

● Douglas A-1 Skyraider by K. Hughes & W. Dranem, Warbird Tech Vol.13 (Speciality Press 1997 ISBN: 0-933424-78-7)
Verdict: It is true that the Zoukei-Mura one was out a good while before this one, but that is a
really expensive and highly detailed kit that is probably more than a lot of modellers want. This
one is a better bet if you just want to make a Spad in the scale, as all the main areas of detail
are there without the hassle of the whole ‘skeletal’ thing! Highly recommended to all USN/
USMC fans, and our thanks go to Pocketbond Ltd for the review sample.
F
irst announced back in 2010, this one has taken a while to arrive but at last is here.
The large box contains 17 grey-coloured sprues plus a single one in clear plastic,
four rubber tyres, metal undercarriage legs and a small fret of photo-etched brass.
In all you get 366 parts and the kit offers the initial version (designed UF-1 up until
1962), with the shorter span and original size ailerons and tail surfaces. The break
at back of the cockpit in each fuselage half shows that Trumpeter intend doing the later UF-2/
HU-16B at some stage? Detail is good throughout and the interior flight deck and bunks are all
included. Unlike most aircraft this one builds the interior as one unit, with the uppermost section
of the mid-fuselage, then the four parts of the rest of the fuselage wrap around it, a bit like we
are seeing with helicopter kits of late. The canopy has the two hinged (upper) panels separate
and the engines are well detailed even if they do just fit to a blank (flat) rear bulkhead with no
bearers, etc. The wings are made up of the central section, complete outboard of the engines,
then the separate outer panels. All flaps and control surfaces are separate and you get clear
plastic tip lights. The undercarriage is nicely detailed and you get the option of using the plastic
or metal main oleo legs
The kit offers two decal options, neither of which are identified in any detail in the instructions: S/
NO.50-10022 of the USAF; 11032 of the Taiwanese Navy.
