STUDENT: Business administration

NAME: Luke Gabriel

CURORSE: MATH 1201-01 College Algebra -AY2025-T5 Assignment Activity Unit3

Assignment Title: Assignment on Linear and Quadratic Functions

DATE: 07/07, 2025

INSTRUCTOR: Prof Simi T A.

Task 1: Analyzing a Quadratic Function – Bungee Jumping Scenario

Given equation:
h(t) = -0.5t² + v₀t + h₀

Where:
- h(t): Height (in meters)
- t: Time (in seconds)
- v₀ = 0 m/s
- h₀ = 210 m

So the equation becomes:

h(t) = -0.5t² + 210

(i) Mathematical Analysis

(a) Domain and Range
Domain: t ∈ [0, 20.49]
Range: h ∈ [0, 210]
The domain represents the total time in the air. The range shows height from river to the
bridge.

(b) Vertex
Vertex = (0, 210)
It represents the starting height of the jumper.
(c) Maximum Height
At t = 0, h(t) = 210
The jumper starts at max height of 210 meters.

(d) Time when h(t) = 11

-0.5t² + 210 = 11 ⇒ t² = 398 ⇒ t ≈ 19.95 seconds

(e) Height after 20 seconds

h(20) = -0.5(20)² + 210 = 10 meters

(f) When does jumper touch river

h(t) = 0 ⇒ t² = 420 ⇒ t ≈ 20.49 seconds

(ii) Graphical Interpretation

(a) Graph: Plot using GeoGebra: h(t) = -0.5t² + 210
Domain: [0, 20.49], Range: [0, 210]

(b) Height is decreasing from t = 0 onward (no increasing interval).

(c) Axis of symmetry: t = 0

(d) Intercepts:
- t-intercept: (0, 210)
- h-intercept: (20.49, 0)

Task 2: Linear Function – Road Planning

(i) Equation connecting A(5,7) and B(6,5):
Slope m = -2
Equation: y = -2x + 17

(ii) Road's slope: -2

(iii) Elevation change from A to B: -2 units

(iv) Parallel: Same slope -2; Perpendicular: Slope 1/2

(v) Use GeoGebra for plotting road and alternative routes

(vi) Intercepts:
- y-intercept: (0,17)
- x-intercept: (8.5,0)

(vii) Infinite parallel and perpendicular roads possible

Task 3: Electricity Pricing in Italy
(i) Linear Function:
Let C = total cost, x = units consumed
C(x) = 0.78x + 50

(ii) Average rate of change:

ΔC/Δx = 0.78
For each extra unit, the bill increases by $0.78
