[email protected] STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR WIRE SAW
The purpose is to provide comprehensive guidance to the management on the
safe operation of diamond wire saws and diamond wire, ensuring a healthy and
secure work environment for stone quarry workers.
The identified risks include, but are not limited to, the following areas of
Concern:
1. Safe Transport: Ensuring the safe transport of the diamond wire saw,
control box, and rails to prevent any damage or accidents during transit.
2. Installation of Rails and Saw: Properly installing the rails and
securing the saw onto the rails to avoid any instability or dislodgment
during operation.
3. Positioning of Control Box:Safely positioning the control box to
allow for efficient and safe operation of the diamond wire saw.
4. Guarding: Ensuringthe guards (flywheel and wire rope guard) are
securely in place to protect operators from potential hazards.
5. Installation of Barricades: Installing appropriate barricades to
establish safe work zones and prevent unauthorized access to the work
area.
6. Joining of Diamond Wire: Properly joining the diamond wire to
ensure it is secure and functions effectively during cutting operations.
7. Connecting Electrical Cables: Making sure electrical cables are
correctly connected to maintain power supply and prevent electrical
hazards.
8. Water Supply to the Cut: Providing adequate water supply to the
cutting area tomanage dust and prevent overheating of the diamond
wire.
9. Identification of Geological Features: Identifying geological
features such as faults, planar stress fractures, jointing, and toppling to
anticipate potential hazards during cutting.
10. Pre-use Checklist Completion: Thoroughly completing the pre-use
checklist for the saw to verify that all safety measures are in place
before operation.

11. Lockout Procedure and Register: Implementing a lockout procedure
to isolate energy sources and protect workers from unexpected
equipment startup. Maintaining a lock-out register to track and manage
lockout activities.
12.Securingthe Off-cut and Dress Yard: Ensuringthe safe and proper
handling of the off-cut and establishing means to remove it from the
work area efficiently.
Standard Operating Procedures for Diamond Wire Saw Operation
Transporting and Moving the Diamond Wire Saw:
Collect the designated chain sling from the supervisor and sign the
issuing register.
Verify that the correct sling matches the load to be lifted by checking the
identification tag.
Conduct apre-use checklist inspection of the chain sling for defects. If
any sub-standards are found, report to the supervisor.
Lifting and Placingthe Equipment:
Designate one person to communicate with the excavator operator to
prevent confusion.
Use standard hand signals when communicating with the excavator
operator.
Position yourself safely away from the swinging area of the rails or saw.
Alignment of the Rail-Set:
Position the front end of the rail 3 meters away from the face, aligning it
with the diamond drill/percussion hole at the bottom of the face.
Ensure that the rails are level within 10 degrees in the longitudinal
direction and aligned level in the cross direction.
Use wooden wedges and a pinch-bar to level and support the rails; do
not attempt to lift them by hand.
Installation of Barricades:
Install barricades on both sides, at least 1.5 meters from the rail and a
minimum of 30 meters behind the saw.
Freeway Cut and Cutting Vertically:
During a freeway cut, use barricades with conveyor belts or solid granite
blocks to prevent wire whiplashing.
Barricades must warn and prevent unauthorized entry into the danger
area, remaining closed at alltimes during saw operation.

Installing the Electrical Panel and Cables:
Position the control box at least two meters from the barricades,
opposite the fly-wheel side.
Inspect cables and plugs for defects; any issues should be reported to
the supervisor.
Prevent cabie contact with water or mud on the footwali using cabie
support stands or tie it to the barricade.
Installingthe Diamond Wire:
Lock out the electrical supply and complete the lock-out register before
approaching the saw.
Tread the diamond wire through drilled holes and around the flywheel.
Refer to the Procedure to Splice a Diamond Wire if necessary.
Install bench pulleys where needed.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR WIRE SAW
Test the effectiveness of the lock-out by attempting to start the saw
using the "Start" button.
Lock out the diamond wire whenever the operator leaves the area or at
the end of the shift.
Warning of Hazardous Geological Features:
Stop the operation immediately and report to the supervisor and quarry
miner if hazardous geological features are encountered.
Continue only after clearance from the supervisor and quarry master.
Special Precautions when Sawing Across a Key:
Emphasize the dangers of oscillation and snagging of diamond beads or
ferrules when cutting across akey.
Stress the absolute prohibition of cuts that may cause snagging and the
need for alternative cutting patterns, even if it requires a second cut.
