12. Speaking practice (optional)

Part 1: Depending on time and classroom logistics you can decide to interview students individually and alternate
between the topics or students can have one card each and can interview each other. Encourage students to
interact and develop conversations. Monitor and gather enough information for an impressionistic mark where
possible or focus on one or two pairs.
You could use this marking scale:
Excellent: Can deal with communication on many familiar topics with very little hesitation. Can use accurate and
appropriate grammar and vocabulary to express ideas and produce extended discourse that is generally easy to
understand. Incorporates plenty of newly learned language from unit three.
Very good: A mixture of the band above and below.
Good: Can deal with communication on some familiar topics despite some hesitation. Can organise extended
discourse but sometimes produces language that is difficult to understand. Incorporates some newly learned
language from unit three.
Fair: A mixture of the band above and below.
Needs improvement: Can deal with communication in everyday situations but finds it difficult to create complex
language without lots of thinking time. Incorporates little language from unit three.
Part 2: Again, this can be done on a teacher>student basis, but you may prefer to do the test in pairs. Ask students
to decide what they are going to talk about (if they don’t know any charities, they can invent one). Tell students
they will need to speak for two minutes. Give students two minutes to prepare what they are going to say, and
they can make notes if they wish. Monitor and gather enough information for an impressionistic mark where
possible. Maybe focus on one or two students.
Part 3: Put students in pairs or groups of three and tell them they have five minutes to discuss the volunteering
opportunities and then choose their favourite. You could ask them to agree on one to do together. Again, monitor
and gather enough information for an impressionistic mark where possible or focus on one or two groups.
