1) Introductory Remarks
I have been studying the organizations of the “Armored and Motorized Infantry” units
of the German Army in World War II since the early 1980’s. This started with my interest
in the units included in the War Games: PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader.

Since many of early war K.St.N of the German Army were lost due to allied bombing,
my main interest has been in recreating the organization charts of the gepanzert (gp) and
motorisiert (mot)) Schützenregiments of the early war period.

Over the last 30 years, I have collected information from the U.S. National Archives,
the Imperial War Museum in England, and the Bundesarchiv in Germany. I have over 200
microfilm copies of the German Army records that I obtained 2 or 3 at a time.

This is the fourth of several Booklets I plan to produce covering the Schützen and
Infanterie Regiments organizations of the German early war Panzer and Motorized
Infanterie Divisions.

This booklet will cover the “Infanterieregiment (mot)” K.St.N.s of 1.2.41. None of the
K.St.N.’s issued on 1st February 1941 have been found. I believe that these K.St.N’s were
not used a great deal. The German Motorized Infanterie Divisions used the K.St.N.’s in use
at the end of 1940 (with the changes noted in the issues of Allgemeine Heeres-mitteilungen)
during the early stages of the Russian Campaign).

Many of the units within the Infanterie Regiment (mot) were reorganized after the
French Campaign (See Afterword for more details). Most of these new early 1941 K.St.N.’s
did not greatly change the regiment organization from the late 1940 organization that was
being used at the time of their issue.

The following major changes were made from late 1940 K.St.N.’s: The Regiment Stab
(103c) was changed, with only the Group Führer left in this K.St.N., with the other sections
within this HQ unit (Gefechstroß, Waffenmeisterei, Verpflegungstroß, and Gepacktroß)
transferred to the newly created Regiment Stab Kompanie (K.St.N. 129). This Kompanie
now included the units that were attached to the early war Regiment (K.St.N. 1121, 261c,
1067, 146, 1124, 1199, and 202).

Using existing K.St.N.’s existing strength reports and other good data sources I have
been able to recreate excellent estimates of these early war K.St.N.’s.

2) The K.St.N.’s in the “Infanterieregiment
(mot)” (Datum 1.2.41)
During the time between the French and the Russian Campaigns the Germans
issued new K.St.N.’s. Chart 1 below shows the K.St.N.’s that were issued on February
1,1941 for a “Infanterieregiment (mot)”, Infanterie Division (mot).

3) The Organizational Strength of the
Early 1941 “Infanterieregiment (mot)”

As noted in Chart 1 above several earlier K.St.N.’s of these units exist. The records
shown below contain very accurate information on the total numbers of personal, and
weapons in most of the issued K.St,N.’s. Although the totals for the personal and weapons
are very accurate, the distribution shown within each recreated K.St.N. may not be totally
accurate.

These records do not contain details about the vehicles in each unit, the number and
types of vehicles shown are an estimate based on existing K.St.N.’s and other similar units
in the German Army.

The organizational strength of the units of Infanterieregiment (mot) of a Infanterie

Division (mot) was determined by using the following German Army records:

Micro Film T 78 Roll 867 Frame (??????) – (15 April 1941) (Lehr-Brigade (mot)).
Micro Film T 79 Roll 085 Frame (00721) – (15 Jan. 1941) (K.St.N. List).
Micro Film T 79 Roll 085 Frame (00777) – (02 June 1941) (K.St.N. List).
Micro Film T175 Roll 109 Frame 632963 – (16 April 1942) (SS-Inf. Rgt. 9 (mot).
Micro Film T312 Roll 498 Frame 092844 – (26 June 1941) (A.O.K. 16).

The estimated strengths of each of the Infanterieregiment’s (mot) Kompanies are

shown in Chart 2 below. The total estimated strength of the Infanterieregiment (mot) is
show on Chart 3. A more detailed breakdown of the personal, weapon, and vehicle
strengths of the units in the Infanterieregiment (mot) are shown in Appendix A.

When the German reorganized their Divisions due to heavy losses during the Russian
Campaign they used the 1.2.41 K.St.N.’s. The German records I have do not include data
sources where this is shown to have occurred.

See Section 4) for more details on how these K.St.N.’s were created.

4) The K.St.N.’s of the Infanterieregiment c (mot)

a) 103c - Stb. / Inf. Rgts. c (mot)

The organizational strength data shown on Microfilm T312 Roll 498 Frame
92857 was used as the main source for this unit. The existing K.St.N.’s for 103c,
1104, and 1104 (gp) (1.11.41) were also used as a guide to the structure of this
K.St.N.

b) 129 - Stbs. Kp. (mot) / Inf. Rgts. (Mot)

The organizational strength data shown on Microfilm T312 Roll 498 Frame
92853 was used as the main source for this unit. The existing K.St.N.’s for 129
(1.11.41), 1153 (gp) (1.2.41) were also used as a guide to the structure of this K.St.N.
The Krad,Schütz.Zug, is assumed to have the strength close to the data found
in Anlage 6 zum Mob. Plan (Heer) of 1.7.38.
The Kraftradmelde Zug. is assumed to be the same as (K.St.N. 1067 1.10.38)
shown on T78 Roll 659 Frame 571.
The Pi. Zug was assumed to be the same as exiting K.St.N. 199 (1.2.41).
The Nach. Zug was estimated using data from Microfilm T315 Roll 399 Frame
1139 and T315 Roll 640 Frame 1348.
The Hilfskrankenstragerstaffel, Waffenmeisterei, Verpflegungstroß, and
Gepacktroß were assumed to be the same as shown in existing K.St.N.1153 (gp).
The Instandsetzungsdienste was added from “Allegemeinine Heersmitteilungen
1940, article 1174 (T78 Roll 660).
The Group Führer, Krad,Schütz.Zug, Nach.Zug., and Gefechstroß parts of the
unit were then adjusted to match all the strengths listed in Section 3 above.

c) 115c - Stb. / Inf. Btls. c (mot)

Actual personnel totals for this unit were found on Microfilm T175 Roll 109
Frame 632963. Additional organizational strength data shown on Microfilm T312
Roll 498 Frame 92853 was also used as another source for this unit. The K.St.N.’s
for 115c, 1108, and 1108 (gp) (1.11.41), 123 (1.2.41) and 1108 (Kol.) (6.8.1940) were
also used as a guide to the structure of this K.St.N.

d) 138c - Schütz. Kp. c (mot) / Inf. Div. (mot)

Actual personnel totals for this unit were found on Microfilm T175 Roll 109
Frame 632963. Additional organizational strength data shown in German Manual
130/2b and on Microfilm T312 Roll 498 Frame 92853 was also used as another
source for this unit. This along with the organizational strength data in Section 3
above allows an excellent recreation of this Kompanie.

e) 161c – M.G. Kp. c (mot) / Inf. Div. (mot)

Actual personnel totals for this unit were found on Microfilm T175 Roll 109
Frame 632963. A great source to recreated this unit is the actual K.St.N. 161c

8|Page
(1.8.40). Additional organizational strength data shown on Microfilm T312 Roll 498
Frame 92853 was used also used to support the recreation of this unit.

f) 176 – I.G. Kp. (6 le., 2 s. I.G.) (mot Z)

The organizational strength data shown on Microfilm T312 Roll 498 Frame
92853-8 was also used as the main source for this unit. The organizational data
listed in T315 Roll 640 page 1348 was also used as another source for this unit. This
was the hardest unit to recreate and is most likely to have errors in it.

g) 184c – Inf. Pz. Jäg. Kp. c (12 Gesch.) (mot Z)

This unit is based on the actual K.St.N. 184c (31.1.41). Microfilm T312 Roll 498
Frame 92853-8 and T315 Roll 640 Frame 1346 were also used to support the recreation of
this unit.

h) 215 – Inf. Pz. Jäg. Zug (2 oder 3 Gesch. 5cm Pak) (mot Z)
This unit is based on the actual K.St.N. 215 (31.1.41). The existing K.St.N.
for 215 (1.11.41) was also used as a guide to the structure of this K.St.N.

5) Afterword
Although these new K.St.N.’s were issued in early 1941 (1.2.41), it appears that the
Infanterie Divisions (mot) did not quickly adopt the new charts since the new organization
charts were very close to the organizations already in use. German records show that the
late 1940 K.St.N.’s were used by all German Infanterieregiment (mot) units at the start of
the Russian Campaign.

New addition of these K.St.N.’s were issued (dated 1st November 1941) in late 1941. ,
These new organizations were not fully implemented until the reorganization of the
Infanterie Divisions (mot) in the winter of 1942.

s.M.G., & 6 s. Gr.W..

K.St.N. 161c (1.8.40 & 1.2.41) had three Platoons of Heavy Machineguns (each
with 4 s.M.G.) and a Heavy Mortar Platoon (with 6 s. Gr.W.) A total weapon
strength of 12 s.M.G., & 6 s. Gr.W..

3) The Infanteriegeschützkompanie (K.St.N.’s 173 & 176):

K.St.N. 173 (1.10.37) had four Platoons of le. Infanteriegeschützen (each with 2
le J.G.) A total weapon strength of 8 le.I.G..

K.St.N. 176 (1.8.40 & 1.2.41) had three Platoons of le. Infanteriegeschützen
(each with 2 le. J.G.) and one Platoon of s. Infanteriegeschützen (with 2 s. J.G.) A
total weapon strength of 6 le. J.G. & 2 s. I.G.
