Grade 10 Chem Project

The document is a creative Grade 10 chemistry project worksheet titled 'The Great Acid–Base Party,' featuring a narrative where various acids and ammonia personify their chemical properties at a party. It includes activities such as fill-in-the-blanks, matching reactions to characters, identifying acids and bases, writing balanced equations, and a creative task to write an advertisement for one of the chemicals. The worksheet aims to engage students in learning about acids, bases, and their reactions in a fun and imaginative way.

Grade 10

Acids, Bases, and Salts

HCl ,H₂SO₄, HNO₃, and NH₃ with a creative, scenario-based worksheet.

“The Great Acid–Base Party” — Grade 10 chemistry project worksheet

Part A — The Story

Last Saturday, the chemical world threw a huge party. Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) arrived first — dressed
sharply but smelling like the swimming pool. He went straight to the snack table and dissolved all the chalk
decorations (CaCO₃) just to show off.

Sulphuric Acid (H₂SO₄) entered dramatically wearing a crown labelled King of Chemicals . He was so
concentrated that he accidentally burnt a hole in the welcome mat (dehydrating poor sugar crystals into
black carbon).

Nitric Acid (HNO₃) came with fireworks, claiming, “I’m the one who makes explosives exciting!” and then
started etching his name on copper plates just to prove he could.

Ammonia (NH₃) walked in smelling very strong — guests could detect him from the parking lot. He tried to
be the “cool base” by neutralising everyone’s acidic arguments, but kept running off to check his solubility in
water.

When HCl met NH₃ , they had such a heated debate that they ended up forming a crystal — Ammonium
Chloride (NH₄Cl). Meanwhile, H₂SO₄ and HNO₃ secretly discussed making aqua regia to dissolve gold
jewellery from the party table (don’t worry, they didn’t).

By the end of the night, everyone was neutralised, the tablecloth had holes, and the drinks had
mysteriously turned into salts.
Part B — Concept Check
(Fill in the blanks)

1. The “King of Chemicals” is __________.

2. The acid that produces a strong smell of chlorine when reacting with MnO₂ is ______________.
3. The base that is a gas at room temperature and highly soluble in water is _______________.
4. The acid used in making explosives is _______________..
5. Ammonium Chloride is formed when ______________ reacts with _______________.

Part C — Match the Reaction to the Character

Party Action Chemical Reactions

Burnt a hole in the welcome mat A. 2HCl + CaCO₃ → CaCl₂ + CO₂ + H₂O

Dissolved chalk decorations B. NH₃ + HCl → NH₄Cl

Made explosives C. H₂SO₄ + C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁ → 12C + 11H₂O

Formed a crystal during argument D. 2HNO₃ + glycerol → nitroglycerin

Part D — Identify the Acid/Base

Choose the correct answer:

1. Which acid is dibasic and can act as an oxidising agent?

a) HCl
b) H₂SO₄
c) HNO₃
d) NH₃

2. Which acid reacts with copper to produce nitrogen dioxide?

a) H₂SO₄
b) HCl
c) HNO₃
d) NH₃

3. Which base forms white fumes with HCl?

a) NaOH
b) NH₃
c) KOH
d) Ca(OH)₂

Part E — Balanced Equation Challenge

Write balanced equations for:

1. HCl reacting with NaOH

2. H₂SO₄ reacting with Zn
3. HNO₃ reacting with Cu
4. NH₃ reacting with water
5. H₂SO₄ + NaCl → (with heating)

Part F — Creative Science Task

Write a **4-line funny ad** for one of the acids or ammonia, making it sound like a celebrity but sneaking in
3 real chemical facts about it.

Example:
*"I’m Sulphuric Acid — call me the King! I dehydrate, I oxidise, and I don’t mind a little heat. Come find me
in car batteries, but handle with care — I’m concentrated on my work!"*
