Special tools

Balancer shaft alignment tool - No.11 8 700.

Camshaft alignment tool 1 - No.11 8 691.

Camshaft alignment tool 2 - No.11 8 692.

Camshaft alignment tool 3 - No.11 8 693.

Camshaft position (CMP) sensor disc setting tool 1 - No.11 8 711.

Camshaft position (CMP) sensor disc setting tool 2 - No.11 8 712.

Flywheel timing pin - No.11 5 120.

Flywheel locking tool - No.11 8 180.

Tensioner locking pin - No.11 3 340.

Timing chain pre-tensioning tool - No.11 9 340.

General precautions

Disconnect battery earth lead.


Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
Observe tightening torques.
If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position (CKP) sensor before removal.
Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other sprockets.
Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing chain removed.

Valve timing procedures

Removal
Removal/installation of timing chain requires:
Sump removal.
Engine at TDC on No.1 cylinder.
Install camshaft alignment tools 1 , 2 & 3 .
Ensure camshaft alignment tool abuts cylinder head.
Insert flywheel timing pin 4 .
Slacken central bolt on each camshaft adjuster 5 .
Remove:
Timing chain tensioner 6 .
Central bolt on each camshaft adjuster 5 .
Camshaft position (CMP) sensor discs.
Camshaft adjusters.
Install flywheel locking tool 7 .
Compress oil pump chain tensioner and install locking pin 8 .
Remove:
Crankshaft pulley central bolt and hub.
Blanking plugs from cylinder block and cylinder head 9 .
Timing chain guide retaining pins 10 & 11 .
Timing chain guide bolt 12 .
Tensioner rail, chain guide, timing chain and crankshaft sprocket as an assembly.
Balancer shaft cover.
Install balancer shaft alignment tool 13 .

Installation
Ensure flywheel timing pin inserted 4 .
Ensure camshaft alignment tool abuts cylinder head 1 , 2 & 3 .
Ensure balancer shaft alignment tool installed correctly 13 .
Install tensioner rail, chain guide, timing chain and crankshaft sprocket as an assembly.
Install crankshaft pulley hub. Tighten crankshaft pulley central bolt finger tight.

Note: Crankshaft pulley central bolt MUST only be used once.

Remove oil pump chain tensioner locking pin 8 .


Tighten crankshaft pulley central bolt. Tightening torque: 300 Nm.
Remove:
Flywheel locking tool 7 .
Balancer shaft alignment tool 13 .
Install:
Camshaft adjusters.
Camshaft position (CMP) sensor discs.
Central bolt on each camshaft adjuster 5 . Finger tighten bolts.
Timing chain pre-tensioning tool 14 .
Screw in adjusting screw until in contact with tensioner rail.
Install camshaft position (CMP) sensor disc setting tool and fit to cylinder head 15 .
Ensure dowel pins locate in holes of camshaft position (CMP) sensor discs.
Pre-load timing chain with pre-tensioning tool to 0,6 Nm 14 .
Tighten central bolt on each camshaft adjuster 5 . Tightening torque: 20 Nm + 180°.
Remove:
Flywheel timing pin 4 .
Camshaft position (CMP) sensor disc setting tool 15 .
Camshaft alignment tools 1 , 2 & 3 .
Timing chain pre-tensioning tool 14 .
Install timing chain tensioner 6 . Tightening torque: 65 Nm.

Note: If chain tensioner is to be re-used it must be drained of oil. Compress plunger slowly twice.

Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise.


Ensure flywheel timing pin and camshaft alignment tools can be refitted 1 , 2 , 3 & 4 .
