ACT 2

SCENE 1: EVER AFTER? (Stage opens in soft morning light. All characters are smiling. Celebration music
plays softly.)

NARRATOR
But happy ever after doesn’t last forever...
Even wishes granted carry a price.

(A low rumble begins beneath the music.)

GIANT (Voice, booming, offstage)


Where is the boy who climbed the beanstalk?!
He must pay!

JACK’S MOTHER
He was only a child! He was scared!

(The stage trembles. JACK’S MOTHER screams offstage. The light dims.)

RED
What’s happening?!

CINDERELLA
The beanstalk... the Giant’s wife. She’s come down!

JACK
We have to do something!

SCENE 2: CONSEQUENCES (Lights focused on BAKER’S WIFE and the PRINCE in the woods. Tension
builds.)

PRINCE
I sought my heart’s desire... but now I feel trapped.

BAKER’S WIFE
You don’t seem very royal to me.

PRINCE (sly)
Perhaps I’m charming, not sincere.

(He leans in. She steps back.)

BAKER’S WIFE
I can’t do this. I have a child. Goodbye.

(She exits, shaken. Sound of cracking branches. A cry. A fall.)

[SFX: Branch snap, gasp, then silence.]

MYSTERIOUS MAN (emerging in dim light)


Sometimes the things you most wish for... are not to be touched.

(BAKER appears, sees his wife's scarf.)

BAKER
No... No...!

SCENE 3: THE LESSON (BAKER sits with RED, JACK, and CINDERELLA. All grieving. Dim blue lights.)

CINDERELLA
My prince was unfaithful. I won’t return.

RED
My Granny and mother are gone... trampled.

JACK
So is mine.

BAKER
We have to stick together. Now more than ever.

ALL (singing softly)


No one is alone... Truly, no one is alone.

SCENE 4: THE GIANT'S DEFEAT (The group — BAKER, CINDERELLA, JACK, and RED — stand center stage.)

BAKER
We must work together. Lure her to the cliff.

CINDERELLA
She’s blinded by grief. We have to distract her.

JACK
I’ll call to her. She’s looking for me anyway.

RED
I’ll be ready with the slingshot.

[SFX: Rumble. The GIANT’s shadow looms.]

GIANT (Voice)
Boy! Where are you? You stole from me!

JACK
I’m here! But you’ve hurt innocent people!

GIANT (Voice)
You will pay!

(The group scatters. JACK runs. GIANT chases toward stage left.)

CINDERELLA
Now! Push the boulder!

(RED and BAKER push a large prop. A crashing sound. GIANT falls offstage.)

GIANT (Voice)
Aahhh—!

[SFX: Echoing scream, then silence.]

RED
Did we do it?

BAKER
She’s gone. We... we did it.

CINDERELLA
We stopped the destruction. Together.

SCENE 5: FINALE (Stage is dim and quiet. MYSTERIOUS MAN appears slowly.)

MYSTERIOUS MAN
No more riddles…
No more jests…
No more curses you can't undo,
Left by fathers you never knew.

BAKER (joining him)


No more losing what you love.

(MYSTERIOUS MAN gives a letter revealing Rapunzel is his daughter.)

BAKER
I will raise my child alone. With love. With care.

CINDERELLA
And I’ll rebuild. A queen, needing no king.

NARRATOR
Though your path may twist and turn... the journey matters.

ALL (Finale song – "Children Will Listen", abridged)
Careful the things you say,
Children will listen.
Into the woods,
And out of the woods,
And home before dark!

[LIGHTS FADE. CURTAIN FALLS.]
