ABSTRACT

Satellite imagery plays a pivotal role in environmental monitoring, with

accurate water body identification being crucial for various applications. This
study presents a comprehensive approach utilizing remote sensing and image
processing techniques to enhance the accuracy of water body identification.
Landsat images from Earth Explorer-USGS are acquired and processed using
QGIS software, integrating multi-band imagery for analysis. A novel algorithm
is developed to improve water body identification, leveraging existing water
identification indexes such as NDWI, ANDWI, MNDWI, and AWEI for
performance comparison.
Google Earth Engine (GEE) is employed to process various algorithms and
obtain results, demonstrating significant improvements in water body
identification accuracy compared to existing methods. Ground truth data,
annotated using Roboflow, serves as the reference dataset for evaluating
algorithm performance. Performance metrics including Kappa coefficient,
Precision, Overall accuracy, Total error, Commission error, and Omission error
are calculated using Python.
The study not only enhances water body identification but also facilitates the
estimation of water quality parameters such as Sea Surface Salinity (SSS),
Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), Total Phosphorus (TP), Total Suspended Sediments
(TSS), Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM), and Secchi Disk Depth
(SDD). By integrating spectral indices and advanced image processing
techniques, the proposed methodology offers a robust framework for assessing
and enhancing water body identification from satellite imagery.
