Are the shaded portions squares? ____ Why? _________

22 = 4 32 = 9 42 = 16

4, 9 and 16 are perfect squares.

For all the shaded squares, the number of rows and columns are the
same and the area of a square is s 2. For the first square, it has two rows and
two columns, since the area of a square is s2, therefore 22 = 4 and 4 is a perfect
square. For the second square, there are three rows and three columns, so
the area of the square is 32 = 9 and 9 is a perfect square. For the third square,
there are four rows and four columns, so the area of the square is 42 =16 and
16 is a perfect square. Therefore, we can conclude that the area of a square
is a perfect square since we square the side or we multiply the side by itself.

Using this grid, color a perfect square larger than 16

What is It

The Perfect Square Number

A perfect square is a number whose factors are any two numbers
multiplied to itself. Take a look on the example below.

9 is a perfect square because it is equivalent to 32.

9 = 32→𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑡

base
The base is the number to be multiplied to itself or the repeated factor,
the exponent 2 is the small number at the upper right corner of the base and
it tells how many times the base is used as a factor.

If you are familiar with the Multiplication Table, looking at it, you can
easily find the perfect squares.

Note: The shaded diagonal numbers are the perfect squares. This means
that the rest of the numbers are not perfect squares. Below are the properties
of a square number.

Properties of Square Numbers

1. A perfect square is never negative.
2. A perfect square number never ends on 2, 3, 7, and 8.
3. The number of zeros at the end of a perfect square is always even.
4. The square of an even number is always even.
5. The square of an odd number is always odd.

The Square Root

Definition: A square root of a number is a number whose square is the given

number. The symbol for square root is √ called the radical symbol.
Examples:
22 = 4, √4 = 2 32 = 9, √9 = 3 42 = 16, √16 = 4
What have you observed of these numbers?

The square root is the inverse operation of the square of a number. A

number is said to be a perfect square if its square root is the number when
squared. Square roots of perfect squares are rational, while square roots
of non-perfect squares are irrational numbers.

To help you remember think of the root of a tree:
"I know the tree, but what root made it?"
In this case the tree is "9", and the root is "3".

tthps://www.mathsisfun.com/square-root.html

A square root is composed of a radicand and an index. The index of a

square root is always 2 while the radicand is the number inside the radical sign.
The combination of the radicand and the radical sign is called a radical.

radical sign √100 radicand

A number m, is a square root of a number n if the square of n is equal

to the number m. that is, √𝑚 = 𝑛 if 𝑛2 = 𝑚. A positive number can have two
roots, one positive and one negative. The positive square root is the, principal
root.
From the given examples:
√4 = +2 𝑜𝑟 − 2; n = +2 or - 2, m = 4, therefore (2)2 = 4 or (- 2)2 = 4;
but 2 is the principal root
√9 = +3, 𝑜𝑟 − 3; n = +3 or - 3, m = 9, therefore (3)2 = 9 or ( - 3)2 =
9; but 3 is he principal root
√16 = +4, 𝑜𝑟 − 4; n = +4 or - 4, m = 16, therefore (4)2 = 16 or (- 4)2 =
16; but 4 is the principal root
9 √9 +3 −3 +3 −3 9 3 2 9
√16 = = +4 𝑜𝑟 ; n =+4 𝑜𝑟 , 𝑚 = 16, therefore (4) = 16 or
√16 −4 −4
−3 2 9 3
(−4) = 16 ; but is the principal root
4
√0.09 = +0.3 𝑜𝑟 − 0.3; 𝑛 = +0.3 𝑜𝑟 − 0.3 , 𝑚 = 0.09, therefore
(0.3)2 = 0.09 or (- 0.3)2 = 0.09; but 0.3 is the principal root

The principal root of a perfect square is always a rational number.

The principal root of a number that is not a perfect square is always
an irrational number.
The square root of a number can be Rational or Irrational.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a ratio of two
𝑝
integers 𝑞 where 𝑞 ≠ 0. Natural numbers, whole numbers and integers are
subsets of rational numbers.
Irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be expressed as a ratio of
two integers.
Examples: Determine the principal root and identify if they are rational
or not.

Rational/Irrational
√1 1 rational
√3 1.7320 irrational because
3 is not a perfect
square
√25 5 rational
√135 11.619 irrational
√5 2.236 irrational
√64 8 rational
