Lesson title: Introducing GIS Concepts

PCs with QGIS installed.
Water sources, rivers, reservoirs, rainfall, and land use are examples of GIS data.
A projector for demonstrations

Introducing GIS concepts using QGIS
1. Download the geopackage file from clickUP. Save the file on your desktop for ease of
reference.
2. Open OQIS.
3. Under browser right click on GeoPackage>new connection. Select Desktop in the
window that opens and then click on GIS_Intro_data.gpkg and then click Open.
4. The new connection will be listed under GeoPackage in the Browser panel.
5. Drag the GIS_Intro_data.gpkg onto the map canvas of your new project.
6. You click on the arrow next to GIS_Intro_data.gpkg you will see the following layers listed
Major Cities
Places
National Roads
Gauteng Rivers
RSA Provinces
Lesson 1: Setting a QGIS Project
Startup QGIS, then start a new project.
After opening the project
On the Browser panel access your water management data from your files
Click on the data, hold and drag to the layer
panel Teach pupils how to apply layers:
Add Point Layers: Major Cities and Places.
Add Line Layers: Gauteng rivers and National Roads
Add Polygon layers: SA Provinces
Lesson 2: Install the QuickOSM plugin
Select plugin on the toolbar-Manage and store plugins-search QuickOSM on the search bar-
Install plugins.
Lesson 3: Manipulation of the Major Cities Layer to a state capital in South Africa
This section of the lesson will aid learners in using the filter function and making a stream function
Instruction:
Right click on the Major Cities layer-select filter-fields(Double click type) - = -All- Double click State
Capital-Ok
Lesson 4: Show the numbers of unemployment in the provinces
Right click in the SA_ Provinces layer-Layer properties-categorize-value(unemployed)- classify- remove
the null value using minus feature-press ok.
Lesson 5: Using the Gauteng rivers layer filter the Crocodile River
Right click on the river layer-Filter-Double click on the name field-equal sign-click All-Double click on the
crocodile river- press Ok
Lesson 6: Make Free state province a layer
Right click on the Rsa province layer-Filter-Fields( double click on province)-insert equal sign- Press All-
Double click on the Free state province- press okay- Go to the layer after filter has been created-Right
click- select export-save feature as- Free State- okay.
Lesson 7: Select by location (selecting national roads that are within, intersect and cross the Free State
province)
Go to the National Roads layer- Vector-Geoprocessing tools-Select by location- select your preference in
this case (National Roads that cross, intersect and are within)- press run.
Lesson 8: Create a South Africa Map showing the unemployment rate, national roads in Free state and
the crocodile river
Select New print layout on the tools panel-Rename your map-The new window open up-Add map
Map should have a legend
