Caliban was an ugly monster. He was half a man half a monkey. He was the son of the evil witch Sycorax.
Prospero tried to educate him but his evil nature prevented this. So Prospero employed him like a slave.
Ariel took much pleasure in troubling him.

Sycorax was an evil witch that was born in Algiers. She was taken by the sailors to that desolate island for her
bad deeds. On the island she wanted to employ the good spirits to do her wicked commands. When the spirits
refused she shut them up in the bodies of large trees. Then Prospero overcame her and freed the spirits.

31. What do you know about Antonio?


Antonio was the younger brother of Prospero, Duke of Milan. When Prospero got busy with his studies, his
proud ambition made him take the management of the dukedom and try to get rid of Prospero and Miranda.
After his suffering on the desolate island and the lesson that Ariel gave him, he felt sorry for his deeds and
asked for his brother's forgiveness.

32. What do you know about the King of Naples?


The King of Naples was an old enemy of Prospero. He helped Antonio to get rid of Prospero and Miranda. In
the end and after his suffering on the desolate island and losing his son, he felt sorry for his deeds and
promised Prospero to give him his dukedom back.

33. What do you know about Miranda?


Miranda was Prospero's only child. She was only two years old when she came with him on the desolate
island. She had a tender and kind heart. She never saw a man except her father. So when she saw Ferdinand,
she fell in love with him. In the end, she would marry Ferdinand and be the queen of Naples.

Ferdinand was the son of the King of Naples. He was a handsome man with a good heart. He was the first one
to jump off the ship during the storm. When he first saw Miranda, he fell in love with her.

Ariel was a good tamed lively spirit. He was the chief spirit on the island. He refused to obey Sycorax's evil
commands. She shut him up in a tree. When Prospero freed him, he was ever obedient and helpful to him. He
helped Prospero a lot to fulfill his plan and restore his dukedom.

36. How did Prospero use his art of magic on the island? When Prospero first came onto the island, it
was under the evil charm of Sycorax. He used his art of magic to overcome her evil charm and free the good
spirits. Then he used his art of magic and the help of the good spirits to raise a terrible tempest to drive his
enemies onto the island to punish them.

37. Which characters represent the good and which ones


represent the evil in the Tempest?
Prospero, Miranda, Ferdinand, Ariel and Gonzalo represent the good because they didn't try and didn't like to
do evil to the people around them. Instead they always presented good, love, help and forgiveness to others.
Antonio, the King of Naples, Sycorax and Caliban represent the evil. Their nature, thoughts, and deeds were
always for evil's sake.

38-"'As you sow so you'll reap" discuss with reference to “The tempest”
It was clear from the incidents of the story that people with good nature reaped happiness in the end. And
people with evil nature reaped nothing but suffering. As a single example; Antonio, the 'false and
cunning brother, tried to kill his brother with his only child to seize the dukedom. He was of an evil nature so
he suffered on the desolate island and reaped nothing but fear and tiredness. While Prospero, the kind
hearted man, forgave his evil brother for all his bad deeds. In the end, Prospero had a good harvest. He
regained his dukedom and his brother's love. And his only daughter would be the queen of Naples.
The ones who sowed good reaped good and the ones who sowed evil reaped nothing but evil.
