Exercise 3

The document contains exercises and true-false questions related to statistical concepts, including measures of central tendency, dispersion, and outlier detection. It provides data sets for analysis, requiring calculations of mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and quartiles. Additionally, it includes answers to the true-false questions and statistical calculations for the provided data.

EXERCISES-3

True-False Questions
Decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F).
1. ….. The arithmetic mean always describes the distribution of data well.
2. ….. The median and the mode can always be unambiguously determined.
3. ….. The standard deviation is actually the square mean of the data.
4. ….. The coefficient of variance measures the differences of the data in percentage
form.
5. ….. The more spread out the data, the smaller the concentration.
6. ….. Measures of central tendency can only be calculated in case of quantitative
variables.
Exercises

1. In order to serve better to their patients, a hospital regularly monitors its times of
waiting times to ensure that its speed of service is improving in time. A sample of 20
times of service has been taken on a randomly selected day and is shown here (time in
seconds):

45, 48, 49, 56, 61, 66, 66, 66, 70, 72,
72, 75, 78, 79, 81, 81, 83, 95, 102, 135;

Questions:
a) Determine the average, the most frequent and the median time of service.
b) Compute and interpret the known measures of dispersion.
c) Calculate and interpret the quartiles.

2. In a higher educational institution the comprehensive applied mathematics exam is

comprised of two parts. On the first day, 20 students took the exam, the results of
which are presented below:
Oral exam results: 4, 1, 4, 5, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 5, 2, 2, 4, 3, 5, 5, 1, 1, 1, 2.
Written exam results: 2, 3, 1, 4, 2, 5, 3, 1, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4.
Questions:
a) Compile a statistical table based on the data above. (gropued or ungrouped frequency table)
b) Calculate the mean, the mode, the median, the standard deviation and the coefficient of
variation of the oral and written exams separately and together as well.
c) Compare the quartile distribution and then indicate whether the data are skewed or
symmetric.

3. The following table shows the frequency distribution of the age of 100 people of a
hospital on a certain day:
Age groups People (f)
1 20 10
20 40 5
40 60 35
60 80 50
Total 100

a) Calculate the relative frequencies and plot them as a histogram.

b) Find the percentage of the hotel guests being younger than 60
c) Find the average age of the guests as arithmetic mean, median and mode.
d) What is the distribution of ages?
4. Find the outliers, if any, for the following data set:
10.2, 14.1, 14.4. 14.4, 14.4, 14.5, 14.5, 14.6, 14.7, 14.7, 14.7, 14.9, 15.1, 15.9, 16.4
To find out if there are any outliers, I first have to find the IQR. There are fifteen data points, so
the median will be at the eighth position:

(15 + 1) ÷ 2 = 8
Then Q2 = 14.6.
There are seven data points on either side of the median. The two halves are:
10.2, 14.1, 14.4. 14.4, 14.4, 14.5, 14.5
...and:
14.7, 14.7, 14.7, 14.9, 15.1, 15.9, 16.4
Q1 is the fourth value in the list, being the middle value of the first half of the list; and Q3 is the
twelfth value, being th middle value of the second half of the list:
Q1 = 14.4
Q3 = 14.9
Then the IQR is given by:
IQR = 14.9 – 14.4 = 0.5
Outliers will be any points below Q1 – 1.5 ×IQR = 14.4 – 0.75 = 13.65 or above Q3 + 1.5×IQR =
14.9 + 0.75 = 15.65.
Then the outliers are at:
10.2, 15.9, and 16.4
