GENERAL INSTRUCTION
1. There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
2. This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
3. All the sections are compulsory.
4. Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four Assertion Reasoning based of 1 mark each,
Section B contains five questions of two marks each, Section C contains seven questions of three marks
each, Section D contains three long answer questions of five marks each & Section E contains two case
study based questions of four marks each and
5. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question in Section B,
one question in Section C and all three questions in Section E. You have to attempt only one of the
choices in such questions.
6. Use of calculators is not allowed.

21. A pump on the ground floor of a building can pump up water to fill a tank of volume 30 m3 in 15 min. If the tank
is 40 m above the ground, and the efficiency of the pump is 30%, how much electric power is consumed by the

wire of length 3.5 m and cross-sectional area of 4.0 x10−5 m2 under a given load. What is the ratio of the Young’s

The edge of an aluminium cube is 10 cm long. One face of the cube is firmly fixed to a vertical wall. A mass of 100
kg is then attached to the opposite face of the cube. The shear modulus of aluminium is 25 GPa. What is the
vertical deflection of this face?

29. (i) The displacement x of a particle moving in one dimension under the action of the constant force is related to
the time by the equation t=x where x is in meters and t is in seconds. Find the velocity of the particle at (a) t = 3s,

(ii) A car moving along a straight highway with a speed of 126 km/hr is brought to a stop within a distance of 200
m. What is the retardation of the car (assumed uniform), and how long does it take for the car to stop? [5]

(b) Two forces 5kg wt and 10kgwt are acting with an inclination of 120∘ between them. What is the angle which
the resultant makes with 10kgwt?
30. Two wires of diameter 0.25 cm, one made of steel and other made of brass are loaded as shown in figure. The
unloaded length of steel wire is 1.5 m and that of brass wire is 1.0 m.Young’s modulus of steel is 2.0 x 1011 Pa.
Compute the elongations of steel and brass wires. (1 Pa = 1 Nm 2). [5]

31. A bullet of mass 0.012 kg and horizontal speed strikes a block of wood of mass 0.4 kg and instantly comes to rest
with respect to the block. The block is suspended from the ceiling by means of thin wires. Calculate the height to
which the block rises. Also, estimate the amount of heat produced in the block. [5]

32. Case study -01: Projectile motion is a form of motion in which an object or particle is thrown with some initial
velocity near the earth’s surface and it moves along a curved path under the action of gravity alone. The path
followed by a projectile is called its trajectory, which is shown below. When a projectile is projected obliquely,
then its trajectory is as shown in the figure below
.

33. Case study -02: Gas molecules move in random motion inside the container. The pressure exerted by the gas is
due to the continuous collision of the molecules against the walls of the container. Due to this continuous
collision, the walls experience a continuous force which is equal to the total momentum imparted to the walls per
second.
