Definition of Appetite:

Appetite is the desire to eat.


It is a psychological need influenced by factors such as
emotions, culture, habits, and environment.
It is different from hunger, which is a physiological need.

Factors Affecting Appetite:


• Emotions: anxiety, depression ↓ appetite / stress ↑
appetite
• Illness: infections, chronic diseases ↓ appetite
• Medications: some drugs ↑ or ↓ appetite
• Culture and personal preferences
• Smell, taste, and food appearance
Nursing Role Regarding Appetite:
• Assess the patient’s appetite and
food intake.
• Identify factors causing poor
appetite.
• Provide small, frequent, and
preferred meals.
• Create a pleasant eating
environment.
• Collaborate with a dietitian if
needed.
